Grrr. That awful iPhone bar at the bottom.
If you're talking about the gesture hint bar, you can remove it. That's what I did.

Yes I do. Slightly different design decisions, yes. Better build quality? Again, that's reaching.
My opinion differs. The S24U has an all around better build and better materials. It is more scratch resistant and less prone to damage the the S23U.

Lol I believe him.
I actually can't stand this guy's videos. There's no way he's switching from his beloved iPhone. He might make out like he is but it's all hot air I reckon.

Totally. Mr. Who seems like a total fake chode.

These grifter YouTubers are so fake. Of course they like the shiny new toy, S24 Ultra but they'll go right back to their baby iPhone.

Or reviewers saying they're switching from the iPhone to the new Android, but you see them with the Apple Watch on LOL.

Who you crapping?

I think even if you are truly trying to be objective it is kind of hard when you get treated like you are special from these big companies sending you free units to review before release.

Then almost all new devices have, well, new stuff to review. And what tech head isn't going to say the new processor is faster, this is better, and so on.

What gets me is the gall to tell people with a straight face advice to buy. I don't want your personal advice. I want the specs, your experience, and your overall opinion not is the s24u the iPhone 15 PM killer, etc. Don't buy the new s24 until you watch this video.

Or my absolute favorite is when you look up a new device before release and some guy is telling you not to buy because of rumored specs and why the older device is better. Or comparison videos of products they don't have and it is just a comparison chart.

To save you watching, the S24 Ultra is now his daily driver.
I always liked this guy. I'm not big on YouTube reviewers but when I do go there I check out this guy, MKB, Mr. Mobile and Matthew Moniz. I respect and enjoy all of them for the most part.

I completely agree. He won't switch to the S24U but will make it like he has and I'd expect a video not so long down the line in which he'll explain why he had to switch back.

A lot of these "high profile" Tech YouTubers just say the things they do so they can stay in the good books of the major smartphone manufacturers and continue to get all the perks that come with that.

That's why I value YouTubers like TechSpurt and Flossy way more than people like this guy, because you can tell they bring a more honest opinion to the table.

Sort of off topic, but to this point, about "Influencers" this is a great video;

Paid shillers, most of the YouTubers are, their job is to make sales, he will have use of iPhone and the S24 each day, best test is to try for yourself for your own use case.

Alright the informal initial review of the s24 plus.

Some pictures of the cobalt purple.

PXL_20240127_091653755.jpg
To say that I like this color would be an understatement. This is a purple not the Lavender of last year. The frame because it is a flat screen shows the purple metal finish and I love that. A phone is all in the details to me. I have been very impressed with the build quality and overall design. This phone is almost entirely screen. The bezels are very small and completely uniform.

The screen is very different this year. PWM is at 492 and initially this is a comfortable screen to use. The s23 ultra didn't bother me but I didn't really like the screen as much as I liked say the Pixel 8 Pro. Now this s24 plus screen is better than the Pixel 8 Pro. It is a small margin but I like it better. The color just pops but it doesn't shock or jolt your eyes. I don't know how to describe it but I like it.

So the screen as far as resolution is as good or better than the s23 ultra. The speakers sound good. I haven't directly compared to anything else yet but Dolby atmos is nice. Haptics are very good.

Battery life seems pretty sweet so far. I need more testing but initially I am very happy. Performance is really good. Like really good.

So the only difference between this phone and the Ultra is the s pen, gorilla armor which I saw tested and it got scratches at a level 8 and light marks at 7. Current Victus 2 scratches at a level 6. So this glass is not 4 times harder than Victus 2 but it is better. I would still want a screen protector on either but the AR coating might be nice. Better cameras. But I tested the cameras on a pedestal at 1x, 3x, 10x and besides oversharpening on the s24 plus they all looked the same. I am sure once you zoom in more the Pixel will dominate but for most photos the 1-10x zoom is most important and the s24 plus passes. Also let's not forger Samsung is implementing some of the same as AI tricks in photo processing Google has been using in Pixel phones with old sensors and winning awards for the cameras so let's not rush to judgement so soon. Obviously the s24 plus should have upgraded sensors but the phone got a lot of good upgrades. Of course there is competition but I don't value hardware alone. Samsung as a total business is trustworthy and proven to me over the years. That is worth something too.

So compared to the s24 ultra I think if you want most of the goodies of the Ultra in a slightly more manageable size and weight(30 grams less) in the plus it is a really good alternative. Compared to the Pixel 8 Pro I am not sure. I really like the Pixel 8 Pro. I feel like the AI stuff is a lot more polished on the Pixel. The Pixel UI is just better overall. But there is no doubt other than the 5x 50mp zoom lense that the hardware is better on the s24 plus. I like the design of the Pixel 8 Pro a lot but this s24 plus in cobalt purple is pretty sweet.

So to try and sum up I think Samsung has produced the absolute best s plus phone ever. There are still some areas that need improvement like but the camera sensors but overall this is a fantastic phone. I would definitely upgrade if I had an s23 plus. If I had an s23 ultra I would upgrade to this or the 24 ultra because the differences are significant enough to add up to a better overall experience BUT if money is tight or you just want to hold on a little while any of the s23 series are still more than good enough for a long while.

Many of them are the modern equivalent of magazine reviewers. Rarely if ever a bad thing to say about anything. These reviews just happen to be accompanied by audio and video, and with less flowery language.

So I just tested the 8 Gen 3 against the Tensor G3 and it isn't pretty. Just the GPU in open cl was three times higher on 8 Gen 3. Not 30% no, 300% difference.

The cpu difference is about 30% in single core and around 45% better on the 8 Gen 3.

I am going to test against the 8 Gen 2 next. Then we can have a nice real life frame of reference as unscientific as it is. I realized that I tested with adaptive battery on. I am going to turn it off and see if the scores change. Should see a little higher results.

Obviously these are just burst test benchmarks. It will be interesting to run some stress tests and retest to see how much each chip throttles under heavy sustained loads.

I will run more tests if people are interested.
