As someone who usually prefers Pixel UI I have to say that OneUI is pretty fun. With Good Lock it reminds me of Android many years ago when rooting was a thing. There is so much to tinker with.
It's great to be able to hide statusbar icons, use different icon packs and fonts, change colors and even change things in the settings menu.
The Pixel launcher suddenly feels very limited.

Fingers crossed the update will arrive today!

I’ve never got this desire for something over the top of Android. My old OnePlus has a look very close to baseline Android, and one of the things that put me off OnePlus is when they did a Samsung and started layering their own OS nonsense over everything.

Great, now Apple can pay wall basic OS features too.
This is interesting, baking it into Apple One is a smart move since it's a subscription people already pay for (myself included). Will they be copying Samsungs features from the S24 Ultra, I wounder.

View attachment 2341619

I don't really like the idea of a subscription to use the features of my OS. Those said features should be a selling point of the OS not a profit center. If all the AI features are on device as mentioned then why would they need to charge you extra? The software of the AI is part of iOS R&D and we pay for all of that as part of the cost of the hardware.

Google is the only one doing it right. They make the AI features exclusive to their brand but they aren't trying to monetize it and it is the best at the moment. If Apple or Samsung ever try to charge I hope they get a ton of push back.

I do like Apples idea of keeping the AI on device. I am sure when they jump all in, it will be worth the wait.

Just wanted to write a note regarding my trade in experience here in the UK. Sent my S23 Ultra back yesterday (I used special delivery because I didn't want to take the risk on standard post). Had an email from Samsung an hour ago today saying they'd received it and that my order was now complete. A 24 hour turnaround is super quick and now my mind is at ease!

If you sent it by normal post round my way there’s a 50/50 chance it would have got lost and never been seen again!!!

Everyone worried about a washed screen can relax. There is a setting in OneUI 6.1 called adaptive color tone. It works like Apple's true tone but in my opinion more accurate. If you turn the setting off you will have a much more cooler and punchier color profile.

The screens on these are pretty sweet.

PWM is 492 across the line of s24 series displays which should really help sensitive people.

Everyone wants to criticize or cancel orders before they even get something because of rumors.

Samsung generally delivers solid hardware each release and this year is no different.

Can anyone confirm if the fingerprint scanner is still cruddola?
Do pics taken with the camera show reds as being orangey-red?

Same here. In the end I couldn’t pull the trigger on an S24+ because the camera setup for the price point just isn’t good enough in my view.
Compared to what? The s24 ultra?

The camera system is surprisingly good even against a Pixel 8 Pro.

It is not going to be as good as the best camera phones but for decent photos and videos even at 10x zoom are pretty good. I was honestly impressed and surprised because my experience with Samsung cameras even the s23 ultra wasn't as great as I would have hoped. I imagine the Ultra is a lot better than people think with the 5x 50mp zoom.

I wouldn't let the camera system hold you back. The s24 plus might be the sleeper hit of 2024!

anyone going to use the S24U as a secondary (or primary) along their 15Pro Max?
I have the Fold 5 and IP15P as my secondary, but I am really tempted to swap the IP15P for the S24U as the IP is just a back-up device as I must have authenticator for work access, otherwise it brings nothing to the party these days

Samsung trade in Malaysia is so good on the IP I would only have to part with just over $100 to upgrade to the S24U plus all the freebies Samsung give :)

Between the iPhone 15 Pro Max and the S24 ultra I would say the Ultra has the edge.

Can't go wrong with either but if I had your choice I would be saying goodbye to $100. Lol

Really LOL it effectively has the same camera setup as the S22 range. Pixel 8 Pro same price point better camera hardware and software. Even the OnePlus 12 which is cheaper has better hardware and software that’s not so far off Samsung’s.

Yep, its worth the $100 just to have a phone with a full 1 year warranty

I can't see any IP16 topping the S24U and as for adding AI to Siri its just trying to polishing a T**d LOL. If AI is monetarized by Apple then shame on those who singularly called Samsung out

As MKB recently noted photo differences are mainly subjective not technical and Samsung have a good record on continuous improvements during ownership

Lets see next week when I am in KL :)

Yeah agreed. Having used the S24 and seen the camera output Vs the Pixel and even the regular iPhone 15, there's absolutely no competition. The hardware is nice but that's about it for me.

Looking into getting that same Garmin.
I love the Garmin Fenix so far! It has been a month so far. I don't miss my AWU at all. But beware there are not the same amount of watch faces and so forth for Garmin watches as there are for the AW.
What I love is the way the Fenix displays all of my health data on one single page.
It shows my workouts, steps, heart rate, stress level, calories, floors, respiration all for the current day, also for yesterday and for the last week all on a single page. It is so easy see and discern all my data this way.

It also has all the maps and navigation and outdoor functionality anyone would want.

Then here is the best part...the battery last almost 30 days on a charge!

Agreed.

I had a Pixel 8 Pro side by side with S23+ for a couple of weeks. Both took some great photos and also had some unexpected results.

Noticed more issues on S23+ with backlit subjects and some low lighting challenges. Shooting RAW was generally a better option in those instances.

For point and shoot photography, Pixel wins... just about everything else, Samsung has got it; and then some in terms of added features and apps (at the "expense" of extraneous bloatware removal).

23+ -> 24+ is not a bad move for me, being that I got the former at a 40+% discount. The 24+ has the same display resolution as the Ultra (in a slightly smaller rounded corner screen size with higher PPI), 50% more RAM, double the storage I have now, etc.

The Ultra deal killers for me: just too big/bulky and costs another $200.

The One Plus 12 looks to be a beast to be honest. But how long do they support their devices? Will it get 7 years of security or software updates? How is the camera on the OnePlus lineup? I have had several OnePlus phones over the years and the cameras have been lacking if we are all being honest.

Funny you should mention camera hardware and software on the Pixel 8 pro. Isn't Google famous for using the same hardware for years and just using their industry leading algorithm to teak the images? How is the zoom on the P8P?

I have both the P8P and the S24U and so far the S24U shines a lot brighter for me in just about all phases of how I measure a smartphones worth and my use cases. I also see where someone else might feel entirely different!

BUT what you won't see me doing is going into the P8P thread and putting down the phone because it might not fit my uses cases and I prefer something else. I personally feel that is disrespectful of the people that the P8P is their favorite phone.

IMHO I feel the S24U is better for me and my uses and preferences than the P8P and 15PM. For me it just adds more functionality and productivity than the others.
But your mileage may vary because it is all subjective.

My last OnePlus phone was the 7 Pro, which is still my favorite phone of all time. Just an OK camera but man, everything else about the phone was perfect. The hidden pop up camera is still the best design a phone can have, imo. People either loved it or hated it. Phone never lagged and it had DC dimming.

I’ll be using the S24+ and Pixel side by side for a bit, I think my trade in deadline is Feb 8. I took some photos yesterday, I’m just a very casual point and shoot guy, I don’t see any glaring issues that would cause me to return the phone yet. We shall see. Two phones have to go, the plan for now is trade in P8P and sell the 15PM.

One aspect I do notice all the time, the S24+ has not gotten warm, even when setting up for the first time.

Coming from the P8P, the only thing that I miss is the call screening. Yes you have the Call Assist on the S24U, but it doesn't happen automatically. If they added that, I'd forget all about my Pixel lol.
My Pixel 8 Pro just got listed for sale. The wife tells me I need to get rid of some stuff, so Pixel 8 Pro is going and I'll switch back and forth between my 15PM and the S24U. So far, loving the S24U.
