You can argue about the magnitude of the environmental impact of Apple's decision or their motivation, but the example of a company like Apple reducing e-waste and increasing opportunities for recycling is a push in the right direction.
Then it seems like they can stand behind that and take on the burden that comes from that rather than having someone else take it on (the consumers) while in the process actually even benefiting from it. Or at least not try to make it look like they are somehow almost going out of their way to work hard on doing something great.

It sure changed Android. When Android was being developed back in 2007, Google intended it to be more like a BlackBerry OS. When the iPhone actually launched, Google had to start over and make a touch-based icon-based OS instead.

BlackBerry/RIM tried to cling to the outdated 'no one needs more than email anyway' similar to Gates' '640KB ought to be enough RAM for everyone' mindset, but it ended up killing them. iPhone's OS design and layout essentially made other successful smartphone OSs use a similar layout.

I'm not impressed with lower mAh on the Pro Max, no charging brick, the square sides, and 5G. I'm sitting this out because I feel like the 11 Pro Max was worthy coming from a 7 Plus.

Going from an 11 Pro Max to the 12 Pro Max just doesn't seem like a adequate investment to me.
Yep, no need to spend money when your 11 does the job. Should you win the lottery this weekend you may wish to reconsider.

I don’t understand some of the “it’s not the year for it” or “not bothered due to the pandemic”.
As bad as it has been for millions, and it is absolutely terrible, there are millions who are completely unaffected so can’t see why the fact that covid is a thing would prevent said millions not getting a new phone if they need/want one.

As for the unboxing experience, who cares? The phone is the thing you need. I’ve personally got 3 sets of wired earphones and about 4 charge plugs so the lack of these is totally irrelevant. Most people have. If not, you can pick up decent quality anker ones on Amazon for pennies.

Yes, it probably is apple adding to profit and painting it as an environmental thing, but the by product of that is positive so, so what? They won’t compromise profit so would have just upped the price if they included them and it would have benefited very few people.

I fully agree with the OP. But I've just offloaded my too-bulky iPhone XS and my temporary phone is a SE 1st gen where the battery and the utility of the 4-inch screen are diminishing. It's different this year because of the new size of the 12 mini.

It's the reason I'm buying. But as long as this approximate size is kept in the lineup, it won't be different next time. Smartphones are so mature (the XS functioned like a sci-fi movie for the full two years) that I'm gone from the uPgRaDe circus. It's over.

But I am looking for teleportation in the next one and will be following the rumors for that.

I also forgot to mention how Face ID has suddenly become a nightmare in a mask world. I took out my 7 Plus the other day because I was getting frustrated. Who knows how long we'll be wearing these.
I’ve thankfully not been in a position yet where I’ve needed to use my phone whilst wearing a mask. I only wear them in shops and I don’t need my phone then.

It sounds like the OP may be suffering from depression. Sometimes you get excited about stuff but nothing actually makes you happy. Not trying to be funny or critical. This is a serious problem people don’t talk about.

On the non depression side it is just a phone (no this isn’t true. It’s a PC) like any other device. It’s something most people use more than anything else so it can be helpful. If the OP just means keep things in perspective then of course. This doesn’t mean someone can’t be excited for a “shiny”

WOW, just WOW Op, your posted content, it's rarely ever positive. Maybe, just maybe, posting on a tech forum may not be for you. Maybe another hobby, needle point, archery, IDK. Some folks, myself included, get excited about how the new phones can add to my daily productivity, especially now that the world is changed.
Doesn’t surprise me. Way too many on here have that similar nihilistic attitude where nothing is exciting, iPhones suck, material possessions are useless, money and Apple are evil and so on.

This year is extremely unfortunate and if a new phone is what it takes to give me a little excitement then I’m down. But I sure as hell am not going to live in nihilism like some choose to do.

Did OP ever replied after the first post? It's only us who are arguing. OP may be vacationing in Hawaii & the people who were sleeping peacefully before now burning their blood here.

Most exciting feature seems to be magsafe, hope some cool 3rd party gadgets emerges from this, perhaps a new smartphone standard?

People will argue over anything in these forums and whatever happens say the opposite should have happened. I'm not sure if the OP replied because it's 9 pages over something that really isn't

Good, I have been camping outside of the Apple Store for a week now and nobody still here in the queue.

Means I can take a bathroom break without having to worry about someone taking my spot.

I am super happy that the thrill is gone.

Yeah I don’t care as much this year about a lot of things I normally do and this is one of them. I could afford it, been blessed to still have a steady job and busier than ever, but honestly I’m so effing sick of typing in my code when FaceID fails that the new phones had zero appeal to me. Sold my 11 Pro and bought an SE 2nd Gen on Friday. Very happy. Might buy a nice Canon Mirrorless Camera this year instead.

I mean quite honestly there’s not much I lost in going from the most expensive phone to the cheapest. And I’ve already gotten used to the home button again and love that it works 100% of the time instead of only at my house when I’m mask-less.

Retina Screen and Retinal Scan for the win!

No end in sight on Mask wearing. Went back to 4 digit code to unlock.

Not everywhere in the world has strict mask wearing regulations, in the UK you only need them in shops and restaurants until your sat at your table. The rest of the time we can use FaceID as we always have. If Apple changed FaceID this year, and returned to TouchID (which they didn't have time to change to I expect) then they'd have to keep it going forwards as they'd need to promote it as a forwards step to sell the phones.

Good for you. I have never used Face ID and have no problem with Touch ID or a passcode and I don’t use a mask. The camera idea is good as well. Get off this inane treadmill of spending €1000+ on a bloody phone.

The trick is that they add TouchID while retaining FaceID. Even in a pre-COVID / post-COVID world, that'll be a benefit to a lot of people. Sometimes FaceID is preferred (gloves) and sometimes TouchID (masks). And lots of other random things. One thing I always loved about TouchID and have already become re-acclimated to is the little number where you pull the phone out of your pocket with your thumb on the button and by the time it's within your sight, it's already unlocked and ready to go. That extra 2-3 seconds of not waiting to get inside the phone is nice.

So there are some new iPhones out. Who cares, really? I don't know whether it's the year (pandemic). Perhaps this year has made me realize that phones aren't a very important thing in life, especially when the phone I have is more than sufficient. Spend another $1,000 on something that really doesn't matter, adds no meaning to life, will be a temporary "wow" and nothing more? Nah.

Am I alone? These new phones don't excite me. Beyond that, they're downright boring. There are just more important things to lust after--like normalcy.
I agree. I'm coming from a 6 Plus so I need to upgrade this year. As you can see, I've held off since the 6 Plus. I don't require the latest and greatest. I did upgrade to the XS Plus, but realized I didn't need it. So I gave that phone to my mother and upgraded her from a 5S. This year, it will be the 12 Pro Max for me - Pacific Blue. My favorite color so I'm excited about this.

Late to this thread, but I basically stopped following phone news all together this year, with losing my job and finding myself a new career, I'm far too occupied, and at this time taking care of my family is the most important thing.

With that said, I am thrilled about the iPhone 12 mini. Exactly what I want in a phone. Compact but not tiny screen, with all the high end features. Been waiting for this since the first iPhone SE. This one will probably be my favorite phone of all time. Perfection would be no notch, but you can't have everything.

I was seriously considering getting an SE 2020 because of this mask issue. Or maybe I will as a secondary. Would be nice for Apple to put a finger printer reader on the Power button like some other Android phones.
