I’m keeping my 11 Pro. For me the 12 series is nothing special, not enough to warrant me changing iPhones anyway. I upgrade every 2 years, which allows me to appreciate real differences. I came to my 11 Pro from an iPhone 8.
I’m in this camp. Covid 2020 isn’t really a year for new stuff. It’s all pretty much the same. Apple doing a retro nettle, PT Cruiser thing with essentially the same phone isn’t the one. Apple should be premium and nothing about this new phone is premium minus the software and that runs perfectly fine on my 11 pro. I have the lidar on my iPad Pro that I returned for the old one at a discount cause I used the lidar scanner 0 times.

So there are some new iPhones out. Who cares, really? I don't know whether it's the year (pandemic). Perhaps this year has made me realize that phones aren't a very important thing in life, especially when the phone I have is more than sufficient. Spend another $1,000 on something that really doesn't matter, adds no meaning to life, will be a temporary "wow" and nothing more? Nah.

Am I alone? These new phones don't excite me. Beyond that, they're downright boring. There are just more important things to lust after--like normalcy.

I completely agree.
I have the 11 Pro Max, which I am completely happy with, and this has been the first year in a very long time, where I didn't watch the keynote - in fact I didn't get caught up in the hype at all. I didn't even realise the 12 had been released/announced until a friend told me! lol

For me, upgrading yearly doesnt 'feel' like an upgrade any more. The changes are just too minor. This time I will probably wait another year or two - if I'm shelling out 1000+ I at least want the handset to feel like a proper upgrade, a new design, a larger step up in tech, something more then setting up the phone and then, 'meh'......

It is very obvious that many people responding to the OP's post do not understand the point that is trying to be made.

Apple for many years have put the 'wow' factor in us when it comes to new product launches. At some point, each of us have had that euphoria 'wow' factor when a new product comes along. Many of us had it with the different colors of the imacs and ibooks (clamshells), the G4 cube, the first ipod's, the first ipod touch, the first ipad, the first iphone, the first apple watch. Regardless of what was going on in ones life, whether it be good or bad, seeing a new product launch with all the razzmatazz that went along with it gave us a kind of warm fuzzy feeling inside, the feeling that made us go 'I want it but i do not really need it'.

With the latest offerings of iphones, ipads and macbooks, because they look the same as previous models with only slight differences between the old and new, this has for many Apple fans caused them to lose the 'wow' factor because they are seeing the same thing rolled out time and time again and that is the point that is trying to be made. Rather than fan's going 'wow, i want it but don't need it', they are going 'Meh..whatever' instead.

The last product launch that made me go 'wow, i want it but don't need it' was the Apple watch. Everything else has been 'meh, same looking thing but with hardware upgrades'. I want to spend money on Apple products but as the way things are going at the moment, that is not going to happen.
The only wow factor these days are in new tech which is foldables.. Doesn't mean these new phones aren't good and aren't much improved. Just not much worth bring wowed about on normal phones

I can understand people liking foldables, I just don’t see it as something that fits me or my portable needs. Right now what I want is battery life, software upgrades, a good camera, and security from all these companies stealing info. In the last day I can count about 5 things I’ve talked about that have been advertised to me afterwards. I’d rather them get rid of the lidar and one camera for longer battery life. I also think that this phone will not be a huge seller.

iPhone 12 is projected to sell 80 million- which to be honest i don’t think will be far off. 5G iphone with a new design frame will always get people’s attention.

Battery life will still be great again this year. Certainly with 60hz

For me the new phones are not exciting because tech has come so far that it just will take a lot more to excite most of us.

Its not exciting at all for me. I think its a good thing that will save me money not upgrading annually though. I think the unboxing experience has also been harmed by continuing to remove accessories from the phone. Apple is supposed to be premium but there isn't a single thing about them anymore that screams premium other than having bespoke software and two stickers. I will always buy apple but I really wouldn't blame anyone or question why they went with another company anymore. If you have a 11pro or 11 pro max, its a waste of a lot of money.

It doesn't affect the unboxing experience if said accessories (earbuds, charger) remain in the box. I don't recall the last time I used either since I have so many from previous iPhone purchases. You can be cynical and say Apple did this only to save money and don't care about the environmental impact, but the latter is a real benefit.

It's just that Apple decided to provide and tout that supposed benefit at the cost to consumers while basically not taking on any burden themselves and actually getting to save money and on top of it have additional profits from additional accessory sales as well. It's easy to make a decision and applaud yourself for it when you have someone else take on the burden for it while you actually come out well ahead.

Thats it

I got up at 4 am to preorder..
My sleep app could not even tell when or how much I slept because it was so disrupted. 😂😂 But it was well worth it as the MagSafe charger is now on backorder. I am getting mine in 5 days. 😀

I think there is a group of people, including myself, that lost some level of excitement for various different reasons. Last year was the first year I did not upgrade my iPhone, the reasons were that I was tired of my cell bill be so high (family of four) the iPhone 11 did not offer enough over the Xs for me to upgrade. However, my cell bill is still high, probably always will be...lol and this year, I like that I'm getting a slightly but noticeably bigger screen, 5G, WiFi 6, Magsafe and 20 watt charging off the top of my head. I did finally realize that I don't need the best camera they offer and this year, the difference between the 12 and pro was mostly the camera so getting the 12 was an easy decision.

If someone has a specific and valid criticism of a phone that's fine. But the OP's whole "adds no meaning to life" sounds like signs of an existential crisis and not a valid critique.

I thought it sounded as though someone was maturing.

Nothing to do with the pandemic. I've been on MacRumors long enough to know these complaints have become a yearly tradition.

I've a 6s Plus, so for me there are no less than five years worth of improvements. It starts to become more substantial when I consider how much the camera, display, and CPU / GPU have advanced in that time.

But the days of upgrading every year or every other year are already over for most of us (aside from some of the hardcore enthusiasts on this forum) and have been for some time.

No one should expect a new phone to give meaning to their life, it should instead enhance what already exists. The fact that the OP had the expectation that a new iPhone should add meaning to their life is their problem and not ours. The fact that so many people expect groundbreaking changes to phone technology on an annual basis and not incremental changes, is their fault for having unreasonable expectations. The fact that she/he has decided to adopt some sort of philosophical nihilism has nothing to do with maturity, as it isn't immature to enjoy the pleasures of life.

I know what's in the box. Please explain why including a charger and earbuds that people probably don't need and consume more resources would make opening the box exciting.
Because you’re talking about yourself. If my mom gets a brand new iPhone, should she not be able to charge it without dishing out more money. It’s apples way of pushing people to buy the expensive MagSafe.

I’ve read a few of your posts and you’re very frustrated with this release. This is a very challenging time for you. Meanwhile, I’ll be picking up my new 12 pro on Friday the 23rd. I’ll think about buying you an adapter if I start seeing more positivity 🤪
Chill out Sam. It’s not an issue for anyone but people defending this cheap move from apple. This thread carries a good name for a reason. Apple is killing itself for pinching pennies.

I'll be happy to send your Mom a charger if you pay the postage. :)

Seriously, no — I'm talking about myself and others who've expressed a similar opinion. You can argue about the magnitude of the environmental impact of Apple's decision or their motivation, but the example of a company like Apple reducing e-waste and increasing opportunities for recycling is a push in the right direction.
