I'm in the same boat as you. My X is going to be 3yrs old in December and definitely needs a battery replacement or I'll pick up one of the Pro models and trade in the X to Verizon as they have some good trade in prices if you want to upgrade. In the end I'm ok with keeping my X, it's been a great phone and does everything I need so either way I'll be fine..
You are exactly the person who makes the case to upgrade.

So there are some new iPhones out. Who cares, really? I don't know whether it's the year (pandemic). Perhaps this year has made me realize that phones aren't a very important thing in life, especially when the phone I have is more than sufficient. Spend another $1,000 on something that really doesn't matter, adds no meaning to life, will be a temporary "wow" and nothing more? Nah.

Am I alone? These new phones don't excite me. Beyond that, they're downright boring. There are just more important things to lust after--like normalcy.

It's a PHONE. Either you need/want a new one or you don't. They have ALWAYS been Phones. A tool. Get an excited? Why? It is a phone.

I really don’t understand the “I need to upgrade my phone every year” mentality.

If you use a phone for a couple of years (eg I’m using a 7, my wife a 6s+) whatever is out when you upgrade is a significant improvement.

I’d suggest that being satisfied with what you have rather than obsessing over the latest $shinyThing is a normal healthy thing for a person.

I admit it would be nice to get a new phone and I'm sure the new Pro's are a good upgrade for my X but I was hoping for a little more from the Pro line so I'll wait to see how the roll out goes and what people think of the new phones before it make a decision either way

If they suddenly have it vertical in a line, or horizontal it would mean a complete re-design of other components to fit into the chassis which they already have designed.
So basically what you're saying is that Apple took the easy way out with designing the iPhone 12, got it. Makes sense. I don't blame them, it's all about saving money.

The only reason I would have upgraded is if they got smaller but kept the same screen sizes due to squaring off the edges but instead they got bigger screens, bigger bodies, and put on weight. I went from the max to the pro because it was heavy and huge now both are bigger and heavier. I also remember how apple sold us on going from squared off edged to rounded ones, now they flip back.

I've attached a picture of the 11 Pro, showing all the free space Apple clearly have to work with as well as adding different radios, camera upgrades and more RAM in the Pro models amongst other stuff...

Lol because its NOT just a phone. It’s a mobile computer that also makes phone calls, Text messages, FaceTime, and takes pictures and videos. It’s got it all. Think of the times when we had to call 411 information to look up businesses, or use road maps to get to destinations. the Smartphone is one of the greatest tech in human History. My brother in law gets excited about porsches. he Just bought one for 70k. Me buying a new smartphone every year to get excited on is peanuts compared to his hobby

Why does it have to be “the easy way out” and just a way that works? Why would they change it for the sake of changing it? It’s obvious the 12 is “soft” reboot and changing the array of the lenses was not on the table this year.

All devices are thinner in depth, and the 12 is lighter than the previous 11 and the Mini is the lightest an iPhone has been for years. Also you claim they all "put on weight"...

iPhone 12 Pro is 2mm taller but with more screen space, 0.1mm wider and as I said 7.4mm in depth compared to 8.1mm, weight is actually less by 0.1kg and in a more ergonomic shape to hold.

iPhone 12 regular is the same but weighs in at 162kg compared to 194kg from last years iPhone 11, 3.3mm shorter with the same screen size, 4.2mm less in width and 0.9mm thinner.

iPhone 12 Pro Max is 2mm taller but again, with a larger screen, 0.3mm wider and 7.4mm depth compared to 8.4mm on the 11 Pro Max, it also weighs the exact same.

All have smaller bezels too.

Any tiny increase on the above will not be noticeable by anyone.

If they completely squared off the edges it would be horrible to hold and offer a lot less drop protection.

Good luck getting $1000 for an iPhone when the new one is out with 128GB at $999.
Here’s one that sold for 875$ today on swappa. His was only in “good” condition and not mint Like mine. Plus his battery capacity is less than mine. Mine is 100%, his was 95%. And he’s missing the box that came with it. I have the box, and unused charger/cable/earphones. I only used the 5w charger on my max the year I’ve had it. Lol. I think my chances are decent considering sales like this one

Something different to go along with the new design to make it more worthwhile and exciting. The same sized 3+ year old notch and camera array from the 11 Pro didn't do the new design any favours. They made the iPhone 12 more tame and boring.

Okay so I guess using the same sized notch for 3 years now, moving on to 4 also is not an example of Apple being lazy and choosing the easy way out. To me that just screams lazy design and low effort.

I wondered how long before the OP would make his annual ‘all the iPhones suck’ thread. They’re too big. They’re too heavy. They outdated. Same ol same ol every year *yawn*
The too heavy baffles me. I checked the specs and the 12 6.7" is a little over half a pound

I think you misunderstood the post you're "agreeing with". She's saying her phone payments are relatively trivial, as others spend more on going out. Which is true; I know plenty of people who pre covid would spend 100£ on a night out.
Exactly. These people at work are complaining about the iPhone price, but talk about going to the bar every night. If you take 1099 + tax over 2 years. It $1.60 per day. One drink at a bar will be probably FIVE+ TIMES as much!

A new camera arrangement wouldn't make the phone more exciting for most, its on the back for starters. OLED screen is a much more noticeable upgrade for many, as are the squared sides - people have been crying out for that to return for years on forums like this.

Evolution is often better than revolution, take the Porsche 911 as a good example, and sometimes things can seem boring when they are slow to change, but that shouldn't mean it's a bad thing when they work as well as they do and for Apple, are as successful as they are in sales figures.

That notch houses the best security on any smartphone. It's not just a camera and a speaker grill. There's a lot more to it then simply moving it behind the screen or shrinking it all down - some things cannot be done in the time they have to produce the new devices, possible R&D time constraints due to COVID etc. Phones are not a one year rolling project, different teams will be working on tech and ideas for the iPhone 14,15 and beyond right now. Apple also had issues acquiring screens from suppliers, so had to opt for more expensive Samsung ones for the regular 12 and 12 Mini which would put build costs up (probably considerably to them compared to the ones they rejected and had expected).

At the end of the day, IT"S JUST A PHONE.

The thrill has been gone for me for years, but I'm on IUP, so I continue to upgrade. Last year I was the first customer that they let into the store.

I've been waiting 5 years for the square sides to come back. For me, it is exciting, but I understand that it is not going to change my life.

I hate the square sides. Too industrial looking.

Meh, I'm excited about the new, more compact design. I know it's not life changing at all, but life is pretty boring at the moment and I know I won't be spending any money on a sunshine destination vacation anytime soon so...

Not really a new design though is it...

I really don’t get the fuss over the square sides. They’re ugly and look old fashioned. Personally I never have problems holding the rounded sides.

It kinda makes me giggle to see folks posting about OLED being such an advance, given I've had OLED displays since my first Galaxy SIII in 2013, and my second SIII, also my S Relay 4G, S5, Note II, and S4. OLED is definitely beautiful don't get me wrong, but it's quite late to the game by now. I've been enjoying it since 2013, still do in 2020.

Not everyone has an affinity for Android and not everyone upgrades often. So while Android likely had any number of features in 2013 the iPhone hasn’t, if users preferred iOS, then they used an LCD phone until at least recent years. I am sure there are many coming from a 6 - 8 series who will experience OLED for the first time....hence their excitement. Being late to the game is a moot point to these folks.
