The thrill is gone because EVERYTHING was leaked. This is in contrast with the olden days of Apple keynotes where there were only bits and pieces (aside from the stolen iPhone 4). When the WHOLE product lineup has been leaked, obviously there's no thrill.

If there was no leaks, I'm sure we would still be quite amazed and thrilled. Imagine if we didn't know about the new design and thought they would just re-use the 11 design.

Like I said in other thread before, it was the most well produced boring keynote.

I monkeyed around with the fold 2 at a Best Buy store. It’s neat. It’s cool. Not 2200$ after tax cool. That’s the cost of two iPhone 12 pro max phones.
I just saw a tech review YouTube video on the Fold 2. I’m not gonna lie and say I wasn’t impressed. It is lacking in the storage space though.

For the pro models there was really nothing to be excited in the announcement and it was more of a disappointment if you compare them to other flagship phones.

The HomePod mini and iPhone mini were really nice though.

Honestly the flat edge redesign was underwhelming and not thrilling because the iPhone 12/Pro look pretty much identical to the iPhone 11/Pros, and even the previous models. This is in part because the notch size stayed the same and the camera array layout was untouched. If Apple reduced the size of the notch and changed the hideous camera array layout in combination with the flat edge design, the iPhone 12/Pro would've looked more distinctive and different, more exciting too. To me the iPhone 12 is more of a iPhone 11S in terms of design.

The only good thing about the new iPhones was the Mini.

So there are some new <insert new product> out. Who cares, really? I don't know whether it's the year (pandemic). Perhaps this year has made me realize that <insert new product> aren't a very important thing in life, especially when the <insert old product> I have is more than sufficient. Spend another <insert sum> on something that really doesn't matter, adds no meaning to life, will be a temporary "wow" and nothing more? Nah.

Am I alone? These new <insert new product> don't excite me. Beyond that, they're downright boring. There are just more important things to lust after--like normalcy.

There you go OP, now you are ready for everything life throws at you!
When I read this, in my head I heard Zaphod Beeblebrox's voice. Fantastic!! :)

I remain skeptical about 5G. I remember jumping on the WiMax bandwagon with Sprint all those years ago. Grabbed an HTC Evo and... and... and... "Where's the friggin' WiMax???" True, it was just Sprint in a desperate solo effort to push a new (failed) 4G standard. Somebody at Sprint said, "We have GOT to be first with 4G." Being Sprint, they totally half-assed it just like they did with their entire network. Remember their Network Vision plan? The one that was supposed to touch every single Sprint tower and upgrade the entire network? Too little too late. I never saw a bit of improvement after the Network Vision program. Then Sprint decided to buy NexTel for $33 Billion and the final nail in the coffin was hammered home. WiMax, the new standard in 4G, was orphaned and left to die. It seemed like with Sprint, if somebody jangled some keys in front of the decision makers they said, "Ooh, shiny!! Let's get that!!"

I know that 5G is a comprehensive standard across all the major carriers. Lots of promise, but lets see how it works in the real world, with millions of users. Will building penetration improve? Ima wait and see how this whole 5G thing shakes out.

Why change the camera layout when it works? By having it where it is, it takes up the least space inside the device allowing for the battery, sensors, cables, radios etc to fit correctly. If they suddenly have it vertical in a line, or horizontal it would mean a complete re-design of other components to fit into the chassis which they already have designed.

An "S" model was never a new design, this is with the square sides, thinner bezels, larger screens in a near identical footprint.

I agree. Using the word "hideous" is hyperbole. I never understood some people's complaints about the camera lens array.

Some of us have grown older and a few years ago the release of a new iPhone, in general, was more exciting. I am personally in a much stronger financial position than I was when I got the iPhone X so for that alone it is somewhat tempting of purchase, but I do love my iPhone X still and will probably just change the battery as 79% is starting to irritate.

This is true about most material things really. You are spot on. I've gotten every single iphone on launch day since the first back in 2007. My business relies on my phone so I get a new one each year. Honestly, it's more exciting to me the wait between the announcement and receiving the phone. Once I get the new phone, it's fun for 5 mins and then it's like, yeah it's just my work tool. And to your point about normalcy, yeah, that would be nice - and I don't just mean because of the pandemic - you'd think people use their phones more while quarantined than not though right?

Your business relies on your phone so you get a new one each year. As a business person, what is your reason for doing so? Do you replace all your business tools every year? How can you honestly say that the new phone from last year won’t allow you to operate your business this year?

Oh it will, but each year usually brings better features and a fresh new battery.

Its not exciting at all for me. I think its a good thing that will save me money not upgrading annually though. I think the unboxing experience has also been harmed by continuing to remove accessories from the phone. Apple is supposed to be premium but there isn't a single thing about them anymore that screams premium other than having bespoke software and two stickers. I will always buy apple but I really wouldn't blame anyone or question why they went with another company anymore. If you have a 11pro or 11 pro max, its a waste of a lot of money.

There's certainly not the same notable advances in bells and whistles each year, so in some regards the excitment has definately faded a little.

Do I still look forward to getting a shiny new toy to play with though, hell yes! :)

If you are on here as an iPhone fan and saying otherwise, then I think it's possibly time to hang up your forum hat.

Let’s say I went on swappa.com(there‘s several places you can sell) and I sold my 11 pro max 256gb, which by the way still has 100% battery capacity on iOS 14.0.1, for 1000$. Now the only reason I got 256 because 64 was too low. But now that they have 128 as base storage I don’t need to pay higher than 1099 plus tax. So the difference would be about 200. Is that a waste of a lot of money For this years upgrade? No my friend. No.

edit: p.s. for context I purchased my 11 pro max in October 2019. A full year

Good luck getting $1000 for an iPhone when the new one is out with 128GB at $999.

You could say something similar even if the iPhone 12 had no notch, was 100x faster, had a 120Hz display... There will always be more important things in life, especially now, as the pandemic makes it harder or impossible to do what we used to take for granted. But one can recognize this and still derive pleasure and value from a newer device. In my case, it's about taking better photographs, which I enjoy and help me forget the craziness.

I'm in the same boat as you. My X is going to be 3yrs old in December and definitely needs a battery replacement or I'll pick up one of the Pro models and trade in the X to Verizon as they have some good trade in prices if you want to upgrade. In the end I'm ok with keeping my X, it's been a great phone and does everything I need so either way I'll be fine..
