Rules:
  1. Name-calling. Name-calling falls into the category of insults and will be treated as such according to the forum rules, your own opinion about another member notwithstanding. You can't call a bigot a bigot, a troll a troll, or a fanboy a fanboy, any more than you can call an idiot an idiot. 2. Hate speech and group slurs. We prohibit discrimination, abuse, threats or prejudice against a particular group, for example based on race, gender, religion or sexual orientation, in a way that a reasonable person would find offensive.

If you are patient and wait a few years between upgrades there is certainly a wow factor.

In just a few short years they added OLED, much faster performance, all day batteries, much better cameras etc.

Someone who bought a iphone 8+ is going to be blown away by a iphone 12.

If you are a hype beast and buy the latest every time, you can't see the forest for the trees.

I can guarantee you won't be impressed by the iphone 12 line up if you have a 11.

However I will bet that if you were to wait for the iphone 15 there will be some demonstrably cool features.

Back in the early iPod and iPhone years I got every new device. The changes from one to the other were really significant. I haven't upgraded my phone since i got my current iPhone 6. This is partly because the changes started to become very incremental, but also just through getting older and a bit wiser I became more sensitive to the consequences (e.g. environmental and economic) of my purchasing decisions. I've always been in a solid financial position, so whether I can afford the latest tech is not a consideration.

It sounds like the pandemic has given the OP some perspective, and that's not a bad thing. I'd bet the OP isn't on an iPhone 6, otherwise she'd be a bit more excited like I am! (I'll be upgrading to the iPhone 12 mini the minute it comes out - can't wait).
Pandemic didn’t do that. OP makes a post like this every year. It’s a cherished tradition. I’m pretty predictable, too, but anyway moving right along...
After waiting 3+ years the hardware is somewhat disappointing. Going back to flat sides not exactly exciting
Better camera was already anticipated
But this year we’ll have to cut Apple some slack. Truth is we’re lucky to get new iPhones with the pandemic going on
Actually going flat is really exciting to me. It’s going to be so nice having screen protectors adhere to the glass flawlessly again.

@janeauburn

The hype is gone, noot because of th iphone 12 itself. It's because the iPhone as a thing is a mature product now. All product lines that have been on the market for a while lose the hype. Just because the concept is not new anymore.

Spend another $1,000 on something that really doesn't matter, adds no meaning to life, will be a temporary "wow" and nothing more? Nah.

On the flip side, a new phone might just be what some people need right now in the midst of "nothing's normal". Maybe someone needs a distraction, something to focus on other than tallies of pandemic victims, the Presidential election (US), the global climate crisis, etc.

I'm sure you're not alone, but what's important is a purely subjective judgement. You have yours, I have mine, they all have theirs.

The last iphone that truly excited me was the iPhone X. This year I am more intrigued by the Surface Duo than anything else - its a great form factor. If Apple had a similar product with their ecosystem I would be all OVER it. I don't want an android phone with an underpowered processor.

Part of the reason could be that in some way also the competition sets bar for our expectations. If for example the competitors have had 90hz or 120hz displays for year people might have been expecting that.

I dont think anyone is here to bash Apple on purpose. It is just that when these expectations are not met it comes out as disappointment or concern that they are missing out something. Especially now that Apple has done such a good job on marketing front to make Phones seem to be such a important part of our daily lives. Not to mention rest of the ecosystem.

For you, maybe. I can't wait to order the 12 Pro tomorrow - ideally the Pacific Blue 512GB config. I'll be as thrilled as I am with every iPhone I've bought each year.

If you want to miss out this year, then that's fine. No one's going to twist your arm and make you buy one.

I will buy the new phone not the top one, just not bothered by the cameras. Its a communication tool and a device I listen to music on the go. I am in a privileged position to buy one outright, which was never always the case. There are those who get the latest one every year , there are those that don't. There are users who will pay beyond their means to have the latest phone. Others will upgrade every few years.

Personally been in the Android world last few years and miss the IOS, so I am quite excited that they have gone all retro with the form factor. I think the iPhone 12 mini may just do me but would like to feel it in my hands see if it big enough not to be too small in my hands.

So for some its quite exciting, but if you're upgrading from 11 to 12, I just don't see the buzz. But if you have not upgraded in a few years, like me, then I can see why you would be excitedly embracing the change.

You have “XS Max”, what thrilling or exciting do see in new “Pro Max” or is it just the “Pro” leveling which you’re phone doesn’t have?
At this point, I don’t feel that I have to justify my purchasing decisions to you or anyone else. The decision to buy or not buy is mine alone, no one else’s.

If you aren’t interested in buying, that’s fine. I will defend your right not to, as your financial decisions are your own and no one else’s. But stop with the condemnation of those who are interested in buying. Again, do what works best for you.

I don't know if that is true, I think "thrill" is subjective when used as it is. I am coming from a 7 Plus, so no upgrade in 5 years, the 12 certainly thrilled me. I'll have 5G and all sorts of better features I didn't have. I am stoked!

I totally get where you are coming from but I don’t agree on all points.

Personally I am happy with the iPhone 12 range, it’s a mix of new while also being familiar.

1. Apple has embraced 5G, this is a much bigger deal than most realise because once Apple embraces a standard there is a greater push to get it adopted globally, the iPhone 12 range are the catalyst that 5G needed, people may not all agree but their move with networks like Verizon says a lot, globally Apple is the biggest premium manufacturer in terms of premium device sales and so now networks have a good reason to adopt 5G faster, so as to get their highest spending clients on new contracts.

2. The A14 seems to be focusing a lot on Efficiency while also bringing some power gains and other nice little new features like a more powerful NPU and the Dolby Vision HDR video.

3. 6GB RAM, glad to see Apple doing this as they did in the 2020 iPad Pro models, this is one of those features that sees more usage down the line and we will not even realise it, but it’s appreciated.

4. 6.7inch up from 6.5inch, I mean I was happy with the 6.5inch on my 11 Pro Max but I did want a slight upgrade in size and they delivered, despite them launching the Mini I am glad they are also catering to the Phablet lovers like myself, Apple are truly covering the market top to bottom with their screen sizes, I think things will be like this for a little while.

Overall I am happy it gives me a good sense of how much better the iPhone 13 series will be as I will probably skip the 12.

Nope, still excited. It adds meaning to my life, if it doesn’t to yours that fine too. My life hasn’t really changed due to the pandemic so my life is still as normal as it was pre-pandemic.

If a phone adds meaning to your life, I feel very sorry for you. I can understand you may be excited for new tech though.

I monkeyed around with the fold 2 at a Best Buy store. It’s neat. It’s cool. Not 2200$ after tax cool. That’s the cost of two iPhone 12 pro max phones.

Calm down. It's not for everyone. If you don't like it, don't buy it. Some people like cutting edge tech and some people also buy 512gb iPhone super duper pro max 12++ to future proof it for exactly 11 months. So, to each their own...

It took a pandemic to make one realize that buying a shiny new iPhone every year isn't needful? Of course it's not needful but even with the pandemic, it's safe to assume that 99.9% of people will continue to buy or do something that isn't essential to daily living.

I see it like this. With how crazy and depressing this year has been I can use a little excitement, even if its something as trivial as an iPhone release. I think we all deserve to treat ourselves a little this year and with the money I saved by not eating out most of the year or going on vacation why not.

The OP is making this more of what it is. It’s just a phone, almost a simple “necessity” in life. Like a car. Most people “need” a car for transportation from point A to B. You can either buy a cheap car or an expensive car. The choice is yours (and what you can actually afford). Apple is considered a higher end phone company, but you also have the choice of buying some cheap out the box phone from Walmart.

I am upgrading from a 7 and excited with the new announcements 😊

Now wondering if I should go pro or go pro max. Such a wonderful problem to have!

It just means you're getting older, haha.

So go and find other "thrills". There are more meaningful things in life than a phone. We are living in a pandemic world, appreciate what you have is more important.
