All apps will be optimized for the x. To think it will just look stretched is crazy. Okay the plus is wider... so? Get the plus than.

I keep getting enticed by the hardware on this phone and keep being conflicted with the display size. Why didn't tApple release the X Plus? I would have to preorder he phone without knowing how much of a downgrade over the 7 Plus display size it is. I don't care about videos. Just how it would be on apps and browsing.

Apple is at the mercy of Samsung because they are the only large supplier of OLED.

Samsung is raking in $110 per display. They can manufacture small quantities of OLED and still earn huge profits. There is no reason for them to supply a Plus sized OLED.

Here are some interesting tests I ran on the Xcode iPhone X simulator. I used the full screen options to pay back all the videos. There was no "zoomed" option at this point in the software, so it is either playing the video like this or playing it in a browser window.

Using Safari I played this 16:9 video off Youtube.com. Please note this is not using the YouTube app only the safari browser.

Next I played the following video through the safari browser and selected the full screen option. It is a 21:9 video sample. youtu.be/iGnwVyQFT4A Again remember I selected full screen as there was no "zoomed" option.

Here is a screen shot of the controls that were available to me from this view.

Next used 4k video downloader to "borrow" the video from the link above. I was able to place it directly into the image gallery and play it as you would any video stored directly on the phone bypassing the browser. I selected full screen and this is how it looked.

Add again a show of the controls that were available to me in the gallery app.

To notch or not to notch, that is the question:
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous 8 owners
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles with a notch
William Shakespeare (with a Little poetic license)
That was most excellent!

Plus users who think getting the X is some sort of compromise fail to realise that it's a massive upgrade for people with a regular sized iPhone like myself. I don't want a massive 'phablet', I just want a regular sized phone with a beautiful OLED near bezel-less display, awesome camera, wireless charging, FaceID and of course 'Animojis

Can’t wait for the X but the more I wait, the more I think I will hate it. I love my Plus and it’s the perfect size for me, when I hold other people’s 6/7 it’s just too small. I’ll of course get used to the size again but I want a Plus sized X so much!

Me too ! Thats why I am waiting until next year when the bump the size up, the ram, and add pro-motion I'm hoping ;-)

I'd imagine it was too difficult for them to produce or get enough of the larger displays. They should have this fixed by next year. The X actually has more surface area than the plus so I wouldn't worry too much about it. I saw some app comparison shots of the X vs Plus and you actually see a bit more content on the X.

for the 21:9 sample, how hard is it to find videos in that format? it looks great on the X

the rest are meh, on the S8 the videos are adjusted to fit the screen on the Youtube App.

You just prefer a bigger overall size? The X actually has more screen area than the Plus.

The Plus is wider, so your keyboard will be bigger, photos will look bigger, all content will look bigger, etc. You will see more content in some situations on the X because the screen is so tall, but everything will always be smaller in size because the X's screen is less wide.

This. Not sure how much it will matter in every days use. In other words - will it be so different that the experience is less enjoyable.

Keyboard yes, but I am not sure about the rest. I'd imagine since it's a higher resolution screen and the phone is almost all screen, you won't be missing out on much. I don't think it's really a big deal.

That's kind of my point, I don't think it will really make any difference in real world usage. Are you going to look at a picture on your phone that's taking up almost the entire front of your phone and say, you know this picture is 5% smaller than it would be on my Plus, that's unacceptable. I doubt it. I think using the X will be dramatically different, in a good way. Smaller or not (which is debatable).

I lived with a 3.5" phone. So I think I'll survive the minimal loss of screen space coming from a Plus. Additionally, I'll have a phone that is easier to hold and carry in a pocket. For me, that's a worthy trade-off. Plus, I still have the iPad for anything where screen real estate matters to me.

Well, I'm not so sure. I needed to buy a new iphone because my 7+ screen broke a day before I left on vacation and I got to tell you the smaller size is very noticeable and very annoying. I moved to the plus for pdfs and powerpoints etc from work and have been using it a lot to go over architectural drawings for a new house and even while my apps load up am seeing how small the phone really is and it's disconcerting. The level of detail on the house drawings is way, way worse than the 7+ because you can only zoom in so far before one side or the other gets cut off.

I figure I will put up with this for a year and when a bigger one comes out delegate this one to my wife, and I knew what I was getting into, but there is something about Apple's marketing on this that just feels offensive, like they spent so much time talking about how the screen is "bigger" than the plus even though, which technically true, it is fundamentally misleading because it isn't really experienced as bigger.

I mean yea, if you need it for PowerPoints and architectural drawings then sure, the 1% difference in screen area and wider aspect ratio would likely be a better fit for you. It’s all personal preference either way, but I don’t think those uses are typical. There’s plenty of X users that like the new size and the adjustment has been no big deal. Personally I’m not sure I need a huge phone. I use my iPad Pro at the office for the things you mention.

So I don't need it for the drawings since I'm not a pro, it was just the first thing that downloaded while apps were moving over so the first thing I looked at.

But it definitely isn't a 1% difference (if I were to guess I would say closer to 10%). The constraint is the width, and the X is so much narrower than the plus that I now expect to have the same issues that forced me from the 6 to the 6+ a few years ago, that I couldn't review documents and presentations comfortably on the narrower screen.

Sucks, and maybe I'll get over it, but I hate compromising for the next iteration of something. They should improve everything if they pitch something as a replacement for something else, and they should have been explicit in marketing it as less of a "pro" product than the plus because the screen is so much smaller (instead of marketing it Bigger Screen!!!! style)

Well the X is a replacement for the standard size iPhone (8), not the Plus. Plus will come next year. Yea, apparently the math states it’s only a 1% difference when you work it out (posted in multiple old threads) and it’s only slightly narrower. It just feels that way because it’s tall.

Yeah I hopefully will get used to it. I think the disconnect is that the 1% is net, where it is actually a bigger take-down of space from the width and adding some extra to the length. Problem is, for many applications width is the relevant constraint not length, so anything with width requirements is going to end up smaller and therefore unable to take advantage of the length. On the drawings, for example, sure I can see more of the front and back lawns, but that's not really useful information compared to being able to see both sides of the house at the same time while still being able to read the thing.

Oh well. I was on the fence about it for months and figured I would take a pass, but the fates have made it otherwise and we'll see how it goes. Once I'm back I can always get my 7+ screen fixed and sell the x for not much of a loss if I feel like it.

That’s fair. It’s definitely not for everyone. The 7 Plus is still a great option, but I think the benefits of the X outweigh any slight decrease in screen size.

Who cares.

The iPhone X makes the iPhone 8 Plus look like an ancient obese old fart.
TrueLaLey sister so TRUE, and agree with you.

I feel sad for iPhone 6/6S/7 users that upgrades to iPhone 8. In reality, iPhone 8 Design has still the design of 6 and is soo 2014, for example you're walking in the mall people will assume you're using an iPhone 6 instead of an iPhone 8. It's also heavier than 6/6S series. But at least, it is soo just as fast like iPhone X minus the camera features, face id, and OLED screen which is a PLUS for an X that is worth it to buy.

Why feel sorry? Anyone who upgraded to an 8/8 Plus (myself included) did so because we chose to. To me, the 8 Plus betters suits my needs and preferences than the X.

People will assume I'm using a 6? I don't think many people give any thought at all to what phone I'm using, and why would I care if they do? Only an insecure person buys a phone to impress other people.
