Sounds like the bottom line is that if you're "upgrading" from your plus model you're still actually downsizing. This was my impression all along and why I decided just to go from the 6 Plus to the 8 Plus, prior to that I was going to wait it out.

BTW kudos to this woman's explanation, just excellent.

Even if you're losing 5% screen area, you are still upgrading.

Apple is really going to learn a hard lesson if what I think is going to happen.

Sure there are going to be people like you that suck it up and "slug it out", but a lot of people don't shell out over a grand to compromise. We will see.

What is the compromise? Some people like a smaller phone and want all of the features of the Plus. You don't think the X will sell because it's 5% smaller than the Plus?

It’s pretty clear the X is the new flagship phone. 8 folks don’t want to admit it, will throw up all kinds of arguments against it, but the new technology is in the X

...if you do full screen (i.e. zoom-to-fit).. this is what happens:

If you care about movies, you don't zoom in the first place. This argument reminds me of people in TV forums. They don't care if they're missing part of the picture. They don't care if the image is distorted. All they care about is that they paid $x,xxx for their TV and it damn well better use every pixel. And opinions being what they are, you can't really say that they're wrong. But I'd rather see the whole thing as intended by the director. Thus the whole concept of zooming, on any model iPhone, just rubs me the wrong way.

That’s not true at all. I know that the iPhone X is the newer flagship, but It’s not an upgrade for me, that’s why I chose the iPhone 8 Plus. I’m waiting for the larger iPhone Xs next year

Okay thanks. I don't watch much video on my iPhone (iPad for that), but it is good to know that you get more of the video on the X than the Plus currently. I wouldn't have expected that.
It really just depends on the aspect ratio of the movie though, that is what Flat Five is pointing out.

or you don't watch them on phones :)

...
but if i were to watch a movie on a phone at full screen, i personally like how it looks on the X.. even with the notch..
or, using the example i posted in #301, the X version looks way better to me.. on the plus, you can't really tell that it's a wide-angle shot.. or the wide angle look has lost all dynamics on that ratio rectangle.
entirely subjective of course but i do think it looks better when closer to how the cinematographer meant it to look.

Why is the Plus image cropped? I have Pulp fiction on my phokd phone now and it doesn’t look zoomed and cropped.
well, it is..
if you're watching via netflix, they likely crop it prior to delivery.. (or, they used to.. i haven't been paying attention to netflix cropping policies lately)

but it's simple maths..
the movie is shot 2.35:1.. the plus is 16:9.. if you zoom to fill, something is getting chopped of.. in these exact scenarios, it's the sides of the frame which are cut.. and cut considerably.

the images are to scale..

the top one is a iPhone Plus.. bottom is iPhone X
Flat five, the actual view of pulp fiction ratio on a plus would be widescreen and not cropped 16:9 like you put. The difference from the X will be black bars on top and bottom, unlike the full screen shown on the X. The advantage of the Plus is only in native 16:9 ratio movies (most series, YT).
In widescreen movies like pulp fiction or Wonderwoman the X screen is preferable.
But 16:9 footage will suffer severe crop when zoomed in on the X.

i know.. that was the original example i posted in #299..
then someone asked for full frame comparison (at least, i think that's what was meant by the Ff post ;) )

then the page flipped so the top of this page is only showing the full screen view.. go to previous page to see the native ratios on the two phones..

Oh. Oops. Sorry i missed that.
But i think most plus video viewers will probably watch YT or other series on 16:9 ratio. So this is more problematic on the X.
Can you simulate how much a native 16:9 source would be cropped on the X? I wonder.

yeah.. i think Avatar was shot 16:9..
i'll do the comparison a little later.

but it will likely be opposite of what happens with Pulp Fiction on these two phones..
to me Pulp Fiction is better on the X.. i assume Avatar will be better on the 8+

@roeiz

here's Avatar on the Plus (top) and X (bottom)..

the Plus shows the movie exactly as shot.. no image loss on the top/bottom nor sides..
the X crops off the top and bottom
(when full screen)

(well, i think i'm showing it a little off-center on the X but.. same thing.. just a little more symmetry on the letter boxing ;) )

Hmm. I could live with that, depends on what will remain in center ;)
Also, worth to mention the image will also be bigger to fit the width..

I never watch widescreen movies, and definitely not on my phone, so the above is precisely why I prefer to stick with a 16:9 screen, although I would love it to lose the bezels. In fact then make it dual SIM and I would have my perfect phone!

I never watch widescreen movies,
how do you mean?
you check a movie's aspect ratio prior to watching and if it's wider than 16:9 you refuse to watch it?

fwiw, most movies, by far, are shot wider than 16:9

(further.. fwiw.. 16:9 falls within the 'widescreen' category if comparing to all of movie/TV making history)

hmm. that is not true.

even if you stop a typical movie at the notch, it will still be larger on the X :

View attachment 724901

likewise, if you keep a margin on the right to match the notch margin, it will still be larger on the X
Is the pic on the top of the Plus?

My use case. While web browsing, surfing Facebook and Instagram, chatting on WhatsApp and emails and office documents whilst using the phone in portrait mode is it smaller than X?

Also what about while gaming?

Avatar is a terrible example because it was released in multiple formats. The original being 1.78:1... Only the digital IMAX got the full image. All other version were cropped down even the "original" IMAX was rammed down to fit 1.43:1. 16:9 versions were further cropped to fit the screen.
