That’s not true. You can upgrade your Verizon phone to a new one through the Apple store app. You just select Verizon as your carrier and it will start up a new installment for you on your Verizon bill. They’ll even send you a box to return your old device.

I’m so confused. Talked to Apple and Verizon about this after test running the process with an iPhone 8. I last talked to Apple and they said I had to do the upgrade through Verizon.

I’ve paid 56% of my iPhone 7 thus far (I put $200 down at target when I bought it).

Apple’s store app says I’m eligible for a “Verizon device payment upgrade with trade-in, however we do not support Verizon trade ins on the Apple online store.”

Ive not seen that screen. I’m able to upgrade through Verizon using the Apple store app. I’m not sure why it’s not letting you. It may be because you went through Target last year.

You think I should pay off the EIP and then use BYOD? If I did that I won’t be able to take advantage of the 0 down right?
If you have EIP from T-Mobile it means that your T-Mobile iPhone might not be compatible with Verizon network due to its modem type. T-Mobile iPhone uses Intel modem which is not compatible with CDMA Verizon network. Consequently, you cannot bring and use your T-Mobile iPhone as BYOD to join Verizon. So, you need a Verizon compatible phone before you switch to Verizon. Since apparently you will finance your new iPhone with Verizon with 0 down payment, then you are set for financing. Make sure you are still with T-Mobile before your new Verizon iphone arrives since you cannot use your T-Mobile iPhone with Verizon, or you need to get any Verizon compatible phones to be with Verizon before your new phone arrives. It is up to you.

It’s very annoying. It seems like a glitch but not easily fixable.

My situation...

I'm on my employer's cell plan (they are kind enough to pay for the service since I use it for work purposes). I brought my own device to the plan a couple years ago (iPhone 5 currently). When I was added to the company service plan, I visited a Verizon store, who confirmed with my boss (the manager of the Verizon account) that it was ok to add me to the company plan. The boss confirmed, bing bang boom, and I was now on the company plan. Now, I want to pre-order the iPhone X on 10/27, but do I have to preorder from Verizon (where presumably I would need to have my employer preorder it for me, I suppose) or can I preorder it myself from Apple? My plan is to get an unlocked sim-less X, pay for it outright on Apple.com, and when it arrives, walk into a Verizon store and have them swap out the 5 for the X on my employer's plan. I figure a call to my employer may or may not be in order to make sure it's all on the up-and-up, but that's ok. Question is, am I going to get a funny look (or an outright "no") from the Verizon store rep when I ask to swap out the 5 for the X, when I'm on my employer's plan?

This has been my plan all along and didn't give it a second thought about any issues, but then I read an article today about folks trying to add an Apple Watch LTE when they are an employee on a company plan, and it got me thinking about my situation.

Bottom line... if I'm on an existing employer's plan, can I order an unlocked iPhoneX from Apple when I'm on a plan that's controlled by my employer, and swap it out at the Verizon store with little to no fuss?

Thanks.

Not true. U can certainly use the iPhone on any network. LTE coverage May differ.

Nonsense. There are two models of iPhones, one that supports both CDMA and GSM networks, and the other that only supports GSM. T-Mobile and AT&T sell the GSM only model, so one cannot use that phone with Sprint or Verizon.

I want to confirm what a VZW support rep told me on twitter...

So i want to trade in my 6s plus AND make a down payment. Both towards the iPhone X. Can i do all of that through Apple or Verizon's website or do i need to do it in store?

Rep said I would need to do it in store if i want to do both.

He also said verizon hasn't announced a store launch date.

Unless I'm doing something wrong, neither the app or the website will allow you to trade in your existing Verizon device. Both direct you to go to an Apple store. Did a test run with 8+. No additional payments needed to reach 50%.

I believe that they send you a return sticker with your new phone to send back to Verizon. As far as I’m aware, you still can not return the device to the store when doing a trade it. Is has to be shipped back to Verizon. If you aren’t sent a return sticker, you should be able to contact Verizon and they should be able to send you one.
I feel like last time I did the preorder with trade in, I was sent a return sticker

I've always done mine right through Verizon. This would have been my first attempt at using the Apple store. Unfortunately, it doesn't give me the option to use the Verizon payment plan. It requires full payment at the time of purchase. I believe that is what the OP was referring to.

So you are not getting this screen at all?

Yep, I can get that far as well. This all happens after you get to the pre-cart, once Verizon is contacted to verify your account information and upgrade eligibility.
This is how I’ve done it every year and I just ship my device back to Verizon once I receive the new one.

Can you sign up as a new customer when pre-ordering through Verizon? I wanted the CDMA version just to have the option of any carrier because I don't have a carrier at the moment. But apple won't let you preorder without being an existing customer of a carrier. But I hadn't considered pre-ordering through Verizon.

That’s exactly what I’m getting as well. I’m over 50% and paying my phone monthly to Verizon. I think the problem is once you’re in Verizon’s upgrade program you must go through them. I plan on using the Verizon app to preorder, though I wish I could use Apple’s app.

I’m curious to see if you get the same result lokihb and I get. After you put in all your Verizon info and billing pin, what options does it show? For both of us it only shows the option to pay full retail price.

I get this...

Let’s me pick which installment I want for my X. It sees what my current phone is, and has my account info put in.
