yeah i find it hard to believe too since a lot of users were saying it's a hardware issue and not a software one. Plus if its a software issue, why do some users have no lines and some do? They should all be running the same updated software.

firmware update will not fix a hardware issue. Probably the HQ said that to just reassure the guy.

but who knows...if this is true, then great!

I think the MBA screen is much more flickering than any screen else I have and that is what the headache / eye burning causes.
All my other screens are showing the pattern posted a few pages ago (http://att.macrumors.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=143756&d=1226449702) without flickering.
On my MBA, the pattern IS flickering. (If you view the picture with safari, you have to zoom in, to get it)

I am writing this from an MBA in the Apple Store in Montreal. They have a Rev A version and a Rev B version on display.
The Rev A is fine, but the Rev B is flickering

I wanted to buy a Rev B asap but I guess now I will hold off and see what happens with the mysterious firmware fixes...

UPDATE

Tried it with the new Macbook - no problems here.

Did u use Mac OSX (About this Mac->More Info) to check on the system spec? Over in Singapore, the resellers display the latest specification yet showcasing the units that are Rev.A.

They do have rev B available if you ask. I got mine in Singapore a couple of weeks ago. Played around with a rev B to make sure that it had the 4 finger swipe and no lines on the screen before purchasing it. It's been working great so far, other than the fact that I'm still not used to using OSX, especially the office applications, since I just switched from PC.

I personally shipped my MBA to Cupertino for testing at the Apple Labs a week ago.

I have just received a call from Apple Exec Relations, where i was informed that the horizontal line issue is "expected behavior of the MBA"!!!

I have been offered a full refund, another swap or the high end MBP 2.8 with a choice of HD.

I am really disappointed as i love my Air... but the screen is spoiling it.

I don't know what to do?

Any ideas?

Apple Exec just told me that the screen issue is expected and within specifications, however there will be a fix for the four finger swipe! REALLY!!!

So I have wasted my time returning 3 MBA now the 4th one is going back THIS TIME FOR A REFUND.

I am very disappointed in Apple, for creating a piece of junk screen on a +2300 Euro laptop

you dont know what to do? send it back, only if people send back their stuff they will learn, if we keep it and make compromises, nothing will change.

if those faulty devices are within spec then the MBA is out of my personal spec and my expected behaviour is not to keep and return it!

I am more than disappointed. Even more since before I got the MBA 2nd Generation I had sold my 1Gen already. If I had know this I had kept the first Gen. Would have been less expensive and I would have a working light laptop to use. Since I haven't now I am without any as some other people around here ... and if those specs change within the future and the not recognized problem fixed.... doubts doubts doubts... frustrating and disappointing I just can say...

What's Up With Apple Lately??

I always had great experience with Apple especially with their quality and service for their products.

But ! why is Apple having crap issues with recent models?

No four finger swipe? Crap screen on premium notebook?? come on these

things are $2500. $2500 ! not some crap 500 netbook but full featured $2500

laptop. Steve even mentioned long time ago in portable devices screens are

real important. I'm really concerned getting mba next week since i want to

dump out my old xp real soon. firmware please.

p.s. let's sue Apple for fault adv. they lied to us about 4 finger swipe thing

So I guess you have one with an US keyboard? where are you located? in the US? In which week was your device manufactured? Would be interesting to know whether the problems might be in some kind of relation or if it's just pure coincidence. .

On the other side it would be interesting to know how many MBAs are sold and how many do have such problems, ok we probably will never know.. I really would have liked to believed that it would only affect very few devices but since I haven't read a forum entry where one with such problems received claims having received a new device withouth the problems it's really hard to qualify this issue in some sort of way.

So, to sum up for everyone:

4 finger swipe is missing on all non - US MBAs.

Crappy screens are the rule, not the exception.

Statement: i was prone for the MBA, and yes, i´m kinda Apple - Fanboy.

But, for anyone in Cupertino (maybe Mr. S. Jobs, too) who might read this: i deny buying the new MBA. I´m not willing to pay a premium for value stuff.

But, to make clear: Sony and Dell as well as Lenovo and others are in the market too, with nice, light notebooks and for those who do not like Vista, there´s a nice Unix - like operating system named Linux and a second one, well known to Apple, probably THE Unix itself, called (Free-, Net- or Open-)BSD. All of them offer a very, very nice looking desktop called KDE who not only features a terific looking innovative desktop but also some very nice applications like juk, amarok, digikam, kopete, a widget engine, a built in browser (where Apple took Webkit from), a great personal information manager and a whole bunch of other nice apps.

Got the message, Cupertino?

You have absolutely no just cause telling people not to post. Just as much as the people here having problems have a right to post with constant complaints, he/she has a right to post if he/she is having no problems. It helps people to know if something is widespread or not, especially for potential buyers. If only the complaints are posted (like you want it to be) then a potential buyer will get scared off. Maybe you should stop posting. :p

hello,

after experiencing headaches with the new MBA, I looked around in the net and found this thread in google.

I have the same problems some of you have, no four finger swipe and eye irritation after short time using the MBA.

will there be a fix?

regards.

According to some posters Apple denies a fault, according to others Apple promises a firmware - upgrade.
I personally believe a firmware - upgrade is impossible, cause of defective/low spec hardware.
I also suppose that within a few months Apple will be forced to build MBAs with different specs ´cause of user complains.
There is also a thread in the official Apple - Forums, so sooner or later Apple will have to publish a statement, i guess.
