Panasonic GF1 (not sure on this; over budget ):

I have the GF1. Coming from a D80 (or if you're coming from most DSLRs), there are definitely some shortcomings. But it produces great images, good kit lens (pancake), and the significantly reduced size allows for smoother travel.

If you're in the market for a small micro 4/3 camera, GF1 along with the Pen series is a strong contender.
