The quick take
If you can look past the months of bragging about how this phone will be the best, you'll find a collection of great ideas in search of polished software to pull it all together. It's got a great camera, one of the best fingerprint sensors out there today, and a hardware design worth celebrating. But the OnePlus 2 still needs some work before it can stand beside the other great phones we've seen launch this year.

THE GOOD
  • Premium design
  • Excellent camera
  • Solid fingerprint sensor
  • Great battery life
  • Incredibly useful Alert Slider
THE BAD
  • No wireless charging
  • No Quick Charge
  • No NFC
  • Several glaring software bugs
  • Display isn't great in direct sunlight

They're missing an important point though ...

The OnePlus 2 is a '2016 Flagship Killer' ....

With either translates as A) bullpoop B) were in for a really dire 2016 ;)

Yeah. A lot of compromises for a flagship killer and a neversettle campaign.

They have had to announced further delays = don't believe anything they say about timelines and invites / don't expect this year to be any quicker than the protracted mess of last year....

For a smartphone, early word of mouth cements the perception people have of the product throughout its entire lifecycle. While early reviews have been favorable, we still think we can do much better. There is continuous work being done on OxygenOS to improve the overall product experience.

In addition, we’ve seen a few cases where the material of the new USB Type-C cable is not holding up to our standards. This is being resolved upstream.

For these reasons, we will be rolling out invites slowly to closely monitor and act on user feedback.

If you have the OnePlus 2 and are facing any issues, our support team is on standby to help. Visit them at oneplus.net/support.

And people are actually responding with 'thanks' and 'this is good news' ... It's amazing what dangling the prospect of an invite does to the hordes - seriously it's cringe inducing.

They're already waiting like 6 months...what's another 2-3 months to them.

Plenty of reviews now when googling for them. The three hours charge time seems ridiculous after having quick charge devices.

Despite having little interest and making no effort to source one, it seems to have found me - I should have an international variant tomorrow.

Also have an iPhone 6 Plus on the way (good price).Hopefully they'll all be here this week for an upcoming trip which will double as a showdown, with the S6, to see which one I'll keep. The camera will be a major factor in my decision.

I'm going for OP2. Moto is great, but dual sim is a deal breaker for me. And I can swap styles easily. Can't modify Moto since I can't even order it directly to my country (EU - Croatia).

Another thing is that I personally have no use for NFC. Only thing that is missing is quick charge. I could use that, but can manage without it.

OP2 isn't a 'flagship killer', but it is an excellent phone for that kind of money. For my use scenario way batter phone then Note 5 or S6/E. Hate samsung bloatware and their crappy software, and OP2 comes without that or carrier bloatware.

OP2 mb isn't a big deal like OPO was, but it really isn't as bad as lot of members here are saying. But won't buy it right away, will order it in a couple of months when they polish the software even more.

Let's see what it's got... vs S6 and the OPO.

It's certainly a far more attractive phone than its predecessor which underwhelmed me when I opened mine the first time.

If you want to skip the invite system eGlobalcentral.eu have them for €450 or so for the 64gb.

mobilecity.co.uk has them as well. I didn't go for lousy invite system last year, I won't wait for invite this year. Gonna order it either from one of the web shops, or wait for a good offer on ebay or probably njuskalo.hr (something like ebay, but from croatia). Njuskalo will be by far the most cheapest option, last year I've bot OPO 64GB for less then 300€ just 2 months after it came to the market.

But beware, don't try to use njuskalo urself. Full of frauds. I only buy when I can meet with the person IRL.

Agreed. They should add these things.
Anyway, I hope we will see it in OnePlus Three, if it comes out.

First day initial thoughts:

Build - much improved. Metal band and buttons make a difference. Like the Style Swap covers. Still a bit bezely.

OS - smooth, some neat customisable options (buttons, dark mode) but buggy in places - the dual SIM in particular can lag or freeze the phone at times. Dual SIM is welcome personally so hopefully there's a software update to remedy the hangs. I do miss split screen apps.

Fingerprint sensor - I always have both thumbs done twice and it works almost as good as TouchID and the S6 which are both perfect for me. As a home button it's weird to the point of annoying in that it's not very sensitive - you have to mimic a push on something that isn't a physical button. Even then it delays getting back to the home screen.

Performance - something like 2.7gb free so plenty of headroom. Geekbenches at 1,143 / 4,667 but throttles performance down to 689 / 2,306 when the battery dips below 20%. Antutu says 57k and 43k at below 20%. No issues with 3d gaming or heat.

Display - I can definitely distinguish between 1080 and 2560 now. Aside from that, it's gets very low. Lower than the S6 at night which I appreciate. However, the S6 gets way brighter (OP2 at full is akin to the S6 at 45-50%). Bright sun may well be an issue. Colours obviously less punchy than SAMOLED.

Camera - only fine some quick shots but it appears to shot fine. The occasional focus delay but will interrogate more in the next few days.

Battery - seems very good to excellent. I need to cycle it more but I'm heading easily for 7 hours. Same mixed WiFi/4G usage, auto brightness with 40-50% on the slider, similar apps etc nets me 4 or maybe 5 on the S6. Again will be going full on outdoor/4G/GPS in the next few days so will be able to get a better idea of longevity when pushed.

USB-C is a bit of a pain when all my other cables and OTG adapter are micro USB.

Overall a decent upgrade but can't say it's a necessity over the OPO unless you're in need of more power.

I was like 'weeeee' when you mentioned 7h SoT, but then you said you get 4-5h on S6 and I was like 'yikes'... I had S6E for 2 weeks, couldnt get more then 3h SoT even with lots of apps/services disabled or removed :(

Yeah sorry - wanted to put some context in there for clarity. I think 5 SOT would be achievable for most folks which may disappoint after the OPO.

Read there's a newer build that supposedly fixes, or at least improves, the fingerprints amongst other things. No dice on my OTA as it's still saying I'm up-to-date so who knows

After more research, the lack of NFC is a deal breaker since Android 6 will have Android Pay. The lack of quick charge is also a negative since I expect Android phones to have this tech.

Some feedback on the battery and screen after a few more days testing (some extreme usage):

Yesterday, I had WiFi most (90%) of the day and, doing emails, calls, browsing and YouTube etc, got just shy of 7 hours SOT over 16 hours usage. I was indoors a lot so brightness was set to ~30%.

Today was the total opposite and a real heavy day. Mobile all day so on 4G only. It was 32°C and extremely sunny so I set brightness to 100%. Tasks comprised Maps/GPS, browsing, calls, tons of photos and video, and even an hour of tethering for someone else (which seemed a real drainer). I got just shy of 3 hours SOT over 12 hours use.

My take is the battery is solid and around 40-50% up on what my S6 has done in similar situations above (4-5 hrs easy day / 2-3 hours SOT when blitzed). A mixed day would net me around 5 hours SOT. I guess 4-5 would be a reasonable average unless you're a heavy user.

Battery takes just over 2 hours to charge. Not sure why I've read anything from 3 to 4 hours unless this was with a different charger.

Quick comment on the display: it's better in direct sunlight than I previously thought but not as good as the S6 (obviously). I did have the odd issue sighting where to tap at times but it was ultra bright.

Edit: first real OTA build 150819 is out. Stagefright patch, fixed the sensitivity/delay in tapping the home button which was a major bugbear along with some other fixes.

Some camera comparison shots vs S6:

http://1drv.ms/1LttmAJ

My main takeaway is that the OPT is lacking detail comparatively. Not sure if this is because of over compression (file sizes are notably smaller) or just the OPT itself or processing.

It's decent in daylight and reasonable in low light. It does take longer to focus and shoot which could result in missed shots.

I carry two in my pockets and more often than not reach for the S6.

Thanks for those comparisons :)

So the S6 is better (it does have prob best camera on any android smartphone) - but the OnePlus 2 definitely seems to be a decent improvement over the original OnePlus 1.
