I have a LG C1 (2021 TV model) OLED and an iPhone 12. I did not have any issue with extended use of both displays.
I guess my brain doesn't care about PWM :)

why I will not buy iPhone 12

Let's see… THEN DON'T?
"Problem" solved. Go figure. No more need for a whaaaaaaaaambulance! ??

And something tells me that Apple couldn't give less of a rat's backend what you buy. They'll do just peachy either way. Imagine that.

are you using yours as a compunter monitor?
Nope mate. 55 LG CX at 2 meters distance and gave me headaches. But after some days i was getting used to it which never happen with the iPhone…. iPhone 12 also caused me nausea…. not the TV.

Do we know if lasik/PRK eye procedure has anything to do with PWM ??

Long time reader of the forum but I dont post much.

I got my Iphone 12 pro on 15th February and as a photographer I loved the cameras.

About 5 days after getting the phone I had a migraine and light headed feeling, I never once corresponded it to the phone as I had come from iphone X and same screen technology.

After 2 weeks I twigged and immediately stopped and used an Iphone 8 i had in a drawer. Massive release in the pain so I sold the 12pro and purchased an 11.

However a deep pain in the top of my head never went away, I couldnt work, play with the kids etc, totally debilitating........ (and this is where the fun 'or not' began)

My GP gave me migraine talets, didnt touch it.
He tried beta blockers, often used for migraines, didnt touch it.
Bloods taken, MRI done to rule out anything serious, he mentioned tumours, bleeds etc.

I sought advice myself from a group called OUCH (Organisation Understanding Cluster Headaches) and they diagnosed me with a condition called Hermicrania over the phone but said I would need professional diagnosis. I had to stamp my feet with my GP to be referred to a Neurologist that specialised in headache conditions. Due to the current NHS and COVID waiting times were 13months.

I eventually paid £300 private for a 10minute appointment where I was correctly diagnosed as expected (a condition which can be triggered by a trauma or exposure to repetitive eye strain etc) and told one of four subscriptions could work before having botox injections into my scalp every 3 months. I was initially prescribed Topiramate a drug that caused memory loss, depression, really bad anxiety. Luckilly the next prescription worked and i have been pain free 3 weeks but cannot really drink on them. The issue is I am probably on them for the rest of my life as this condition hardly goes into remission.

WHAT I AM TRYING TO SAY IS ANYBODY EXPERIENCING HEADACHES ETC, STOP AS QUICK AS YOU POSSIBLY CAN.

I appreciate this doesnt effect a large amount of people but if this can save just one person from what I have had to go through it will have done some good.

This last 6 months has been hell, I remember reading all the same comments on the Iphone X and thinking everyone was just being soft and imagining it. I hadnt been to the GP at all in the last 3 years, in the last 6 months I have been or called over 50 times.

i am now waiting on the next LCD screen and sticking with my Iphone 11 until then, not holding my breath that will come anytime soon.

Good health to everyone and take care.

Hmmm. I wonder if pro motion will help us that deal with with PWM
I have found this article that says that with LTPO there is no DC Dimming possible an only low PWM:

This could be horrible :( But how trustworthy this source is, its another question. But when you look at Oppo/OnePlus with their new Smartphones with LTPO Display they have ditched the dc dimming function. I have tried the S21 Ultra that also has a 120 Hz LTPO Display and i was not possible to use it. Maybe Apple makes with his own approach on LTPO something different and better. But this hope is not big :(

More than likely not since Apple uses samsung/lg displays.. Hopefully they just at least go back to the 11 pro frequencies. I personally didn’t have problems with those displays. The 12s were the first displays that I encountered this issue.
Anyone know if we will get the frequency before preorders start for the 13 or do we have to wait for people to get them in hand..

I think we have to wait, i am going to preorder when available and then try it for a few days in order to decide if i want to keep it or return it to apple

End of the road for all of us who are affected by PWM technology. As long as there is OLED, we can’t really buy any of these new phones. High time some industries acknowledge this issue and make phones for the minority of us.

No DC dimming, no LTPO can make us comfortable. Since PWM is inherent to OLED tech, we really can’t use it no matter how the manufacturers try to overcome it. For us, we will have to wait for the phone companies to adopt the micro LED tech.

I'm sure your right once again this year but I still have to try with the 13 series. One last roll of the dice.

Worst case is an ipad Mini 6 for home consumption and a iphone se for the best pocketability. Or switching to the Android device lottery.

@Boyyai: I fear that you are right when i think about my experience with dc dimming option on oneplus and motorola. And when Apple again use Samsung Display with low Frequenzy on the pro max i have very little hope. Would Apple use BOE OLED Display like the one on Magic 3 Serie then it could be better chance. It not only has very high PWM, Flicker Rate at max brightness is 3-4%. This are good results a OLED Display.

As long as Apple continues the iPhone SE line with LCD, I'll be okay.

There are new displays and new display drivers so there is a chance of better! i pre-order tomorrow and see what i feel when using the 13 pro fist :-0
Yep, I'm curious about that as well. No idea what "New Display Engine" means, but I'm slightly hopeful that it could potentially be better for us eyestrain-wise.

There is no good phone left in the Android world too which uses the LED technology.

The question that remains is how long are they going to keep the LCD on SE line. If Apple reuses the body of iphone X and Xs body for their next SE lineup, then it’s going to be a nightmare for the rest of us. And the SE in the current form leaves so much to be desired.

I’ve only every had LCD IPhones (11, XR, 7, etc…). Just pre-ordered the 13-mini yesterday and plan to trade-in my iPhone 11. I’ll wait until the last day possible to send in the trade in. I can’t imagine PWM will be an issue since my phone is not my primary device (ie I use my iPad Pro for youtube, streaming and most other consumption type content). My phone is just for the basics: Texting, camera, maps, emails and for the odd internet search or video. Oh yeah, I use it for phone calls too?

I just hate how Apple is not understanding How serious is the argument here.
They still use OLED displays that use PWM to modulate brigtness, and so they flicker!
30/40% OLED Smartphone Owner's are claiming infact, eyestrain, headhace, nausea, dizziness, motion sickness, that is mainly caused by the screen flicker.
a DC dimmimg option, like on the android side, will not fix the problem!! Its just a fresh candy excuse to keep the consumer to buy the product!

LG has new OLED panels (on their TV lineup), that are called "Self Lit", and they claim that those panels, are not using any backlight, so there is any Flickering or PWM used.I do really hope to see a change in display technology on future Iphones.

I really hope Apple can see and hear this message, because it is not only me, but 30% of your customers having problems like this!
Imagine using a strobo flashing light, and point it to your eyes for 5h, or more, a day. How would you feel? Confused? You are okay. It is normal. We just need the right technology, and this PWM thing, on a Display, it is garbage!

Please Apple do not use any PWM or Flickering Display in the future! (not only for Iphones, both for Mac, Ipad, Macbook).
Written on my SE 1st gen

If you want a pwm free display on next Apple devices, like and comment this post, to make it notice!
Go buy an LG phone.
