It is off to a great start. My number one desire was a greater emphasis on my Library, and that is exactly what they did.

It will no doubt see many many tweaks before release, but its awesome.

I've been using it and really like it, I LOVE that the playlist artwork is as prominent as album artwork now. My biggest complaint is how they're doing the Up Next system. But I like the overall focus on album artwork.

And yeah, the fonts could be smaller in some areas, mostly in Now Playing (and especially the lock screen controls). But speaking of it, I love that the artwork size switches as you play and pause. They did remove the option they put in 9.3 to tap the name to go to the album too.

Haven't worked out yet how to rate songs... The pop up (three dots) has options for Love and Dislike, but don't see how to get the stars for those of us who, like a more granular rating...
You have Apple Music? The legacy star ratings were overly granular for most people, and they didn't really do anything of value. the Love/Dislike options actually help drive your Apple Music experience, so they have infinitely more value, and they will actually get used since the user can make the quick choice and move on.

The new iOS 10 music app will no doubt see many tweaks throughout the next 3-4 months just like it saw some quite a few tweaks during the redesign in 8.4 beta and some more throughout iOS 9 life cycle.

So no sense hating on it quite yet. It's very obvious it's in really early stages and not even close to complete.
An early beta isn't a place to complain about things like performance, but the whole point is to provide feedback about the software. It's not "hating", necessarily, it's close to "impressions"

Yes, I have Apple Music and I use the Love/Dislike buttons for that. However, I also have over 32,000 tracks in my collection, and I have a whole set of smart playlists which are driven by star rating. So while star ratings may not do anything of value to you, they are fundamental in how I use my music library. Now, do you have an answer to my question?

Sounds like you wasted a tremendous amount of time on the rating system when you could have allowed Genius to be doing most of that work for the last few years.
While I wouldn't be surprised to see the star ratings make a return before release, I also would not be surprised if they don't.

I haven't used even the iPod function on my iPhone is so long since I discovered Spotify. I will have to dive into this app just to be able to see how it looks/acts. Did they combine your personal music into this app as well, like the music saved on the device? Sorry on the iPad right now otherwise I would answer my own question

Sounds like you really don't have a clue how I manage my music library or my listening habits. Let's hope someone can actually answer the question I asked rather than pushing their own point of view about what I should or should not be doing.

I wish I could only show downloaded music, as I could up until now.

In Library, I see "Downloaded Music" as one of the options alongside Playlists, Artists etc. When I touch that, the heading says "Showing only music on this iPhone" and again I get the options Playlists, Artists, etc. Does this do what you want? The options in Library are editable so maybe it's hidden for you but you could turn it on through the Edit menu.

I far prefer the iOS 9 Music app. The new Music app is my biggest design complaint with iOS 10.

I don't like the "cards" layout with Now Playing, the font is too big, I actually think it is more messy now.

Hopefully this is tweaked majorly during the beta process.

I think their point, comments about Genius aside, was that there doesn't seem to be a way to do this in the app currently and they're not sure if Apple will put it back. You may have to stick to rating through iTunes.

Nope. There are only a handful of recommended playlists now.

Yeah, comparing my phone to iTunes on my computer it's extremely different, and not in a good way. What's the point of the 'Heavy Rotation' section? I already know the songs that I play a lot, in fact I have a playlist for that... Can't remember whether I made it or whether it's a default. Now there are six suggested playlists up at the top and six artist playlists further down. At least the Browse section seems to have more variety.

I just wanted to say that I also use the star system to rate my music, so you are not alone in this.

The star system is great; sometimes I like a song A LOT!! and rate it 5 stars. Sometimes I like a song more than average, so it gets 3-4 stars. Sometimes I don't really care for a song but still want it in my library to play on certain occasions for other people, so it gets 1-2 stars.

It's a system that works really well and I'll be upset if it goes away. Simply hitting the heart for a track isn't enough; there are different degrees of liking something.

EDIT: I should add that if this does go away we may be able to replicate it with playlists. Just make playlists "5 stars", "4 stars", etc... and populate them as appropriate. You can even use temporary smart playlists to initially populate them. It's clunky, but may be a solution if they take this feature away from us.

Why is it a waste of time? It was useful and probably enjoyable for this user to rate his music in a granular way, as it is for me? How does having a feature many find useful affect you? If you don't like it, you don't have to use it, but if it's removed we can't use it. I just want to add this feature being removed will break many smartplaylists that are one of the killer functions that keep me using iTunes and Apple's music app on iPhone.

I don't really like the big font...I preferred the regular San Francisco. Also the white is so dang annoying. I really wish they included a Dark Mode to remedy this because then it would be closer to the iOS 6 one at least.
