When I use the drive with my MP 6,1 connected as a USB 3.0 device, Smartmontools cannot read the temperature.

When I use the drive with my M2 Max MBP as a TB3 device, Smartmontools can read the temperature.

Note, I had the Samsung 980PRO previously installed as the boot drive in my Mac Pro 6,1. I replaced the Samsung 980PRO 1TB with the Kingston Fury Renegade 1TB. So the INDMEM enclosure is using the Samsung SSD for the moment. As I recall, the temperature of the Samsung (typically 55 C) when the Mac Pro was idle was about 15 C warmer than the temperature of the Kingston (typically 40 C) when installed in the Mac Pro and the computer is idle running macOS Big Sur.

The current configuration includes the INDMEM enclosure and a Samsung 980PRO 1TB SSD. The enclosure is positioned flat on the surface of a wooden table with the INDMEM logo facing up. The enclosure is attached to a MBP M2 Max running Ventura 13.3.1(a).

I attached the device to the computer and let it idle for about 10 minutes. The temperature measured about 40 C. After a 37GB file copy, the temperature rises to 43 C.

The enclosure was positioned flat on the surface of a wooden table with the INDMEM logo facing to the side ("vertical" orientation).

Idle temp after about 10 minutes is 41 C. Temperature after 37GB file copy is 44 C.
Thank you. Can you share the read and write speeds too?
Want to get an idea what speed the INDMEM enclosure supports.

Here is the Amorphous Disk Mark test I did a while ago. The Blackmagic test is similar. INDMEM U4001 with Samsung 980 PRO 1TB attached to a MBP M2 Max.

Note, I have reservations about the Samsung 980 PRO SSD. I had problems with it when I used it as the internal drive inside my MP 6,1 to boot macOS Monterey and Ventura. I have not undertaken extensive testing with it as a data disk. I did experience one anomaly the other day when I attached the INDMEM U4001 with the Samsung 980 PRO to my MP 6,1 (USB 3.0 connection using USB C to USB A adapter) to get some temperature data for you. The drive took about 5 minutes to mount. During that time, Finder was not responding. Other apps were running and I could switch to them and browse with Safari. After about 5 minutes, the volumes mounted and Finder was responsive again. As it turned out, smartmontools cannot read the temperature from the drive so I unmounted it. I do not have an explanation for why this happened but it was a reminder of the problem I was having when I was using the Samsung SSD as my primary boot internal drive on the MP 6,1.

2TB WD_BLACK SN770 NVMe just dropped to 99.99 on Amazon (after applying $10 Amazon coupon). Lowest price I've seen for SN770 (has there been any gen 4 2TB for lower?).

Just ordered this for myself. I never did find out whether HMB is supported by Mac OS. I'm not using as a boot volume so it probably doesn't matter.

Based on your recommendation, I picked this drive up a few weeks ago at $109 to use inside my ACASIS TBU401, connected to my M1 iMac.

I'm getting great speeds of 2700MB/s for both read and write.

I received 2TB SN770. Yesterday I ran the two popular benchmarks on it while it was empty, using my TBU42, attached to my Mac Mini M2 Pro:

Write speeds were slightly slower than the 1TB SN770 but not enough to matter.

I bit the bullet and bought the enclosure which claims to stay cool. I was/am in serious doubt if the Acasis isn't the better choice as everyone seems to buy that one. I do read a lot the Acasis gets hot.

As Steve said the kingston fury stays cool I was inclined to buy that one but it's sold out. WD SN770 comes at a great price but does not have NAND, right? I am wondering if the seagate firecuda 530 offers any advantage above the 520 as the port seems to be the bottleneck.

I also wonder if in real life I'd ever notice the difference with a samsung t7.

The amazon reviews keep referring to it. My apologies for the choice of words. I never turn the device off...
No worries and no apology necessary... I think a lot of people that review, especially on Amazon, tend to exaggerate a bit on bad and good sides of things.

You already bought something so it doesn't really matter anymore but it really just gets warm to the touch and under heavy load it can get pretty warm... but I never feel it is hot where it would be unpleasant to touch or where I get worried about the ssd.

I'm more scared of burning down the house. Sometimes a browser pushes the CPU into a frenzy. Granted CPU is in the mac but the SSD warms up too. As sometimes a charging smartphone causes a fire I wonder...

I found this site a good resource for finding specs on various SSD's. I recall I found a link to this site in a Dortania github issue that discussed SSD compatibility.

It provides a good deal of technical information including the controller, type of cache used, etc. You can then google the controller to dig into potential issues.

I rather have my equipments cases getting warm than a case which stay cool. As that means the thermal transfer from the device inside is working and the heat is ventilated off.

Perfect.

Hey all...how do we feel about the Hynix drives? Still considered a solid choice? I have one in a Orico enclosure and have zero issues but looking to get another drive and debating if I should consider other options.

Another semi-related question: Does anyone have a good solution for holding these ACASIS style enclosures? They're small and light and flop around. Would love a want to hold a few of them in one stand or something.

Ugh. Between this thread and others. So I have ordered an Acacias TBU401 (as 405 ain't available here).

But I'm torn on different NVME drives. I'd like T3 Plus for 4TB at £188 ... but I know it will drop off speed wise depending on fullness (QLC not TLC) ... but for TLC drives its Corsair P5* or Firecuba 520/530, or WD BLACK SN850X 4TB / 2TB. (or 1 that is faster, other that uses 10/20Gbps connection)

I've ordered the Firecuda 530. It had a nice performance, acceptable price and high TBW. The 520 comes cheaper and with an even higher TBW. The speed's slower but not sure if you'd notice that with an extern enclosure. Almost bought the 520. I looked at a Hynix drive too but only the price looked appealing to me.

Acasis & PNYCS2241 4TB - actual results

Thanks for all your good advice which led me to buy an Acvasis TBU405 for my MacMini M2Pro. My 2TB WDBlack SN770 zips long now!

But I wanted a larger drive to effectively replace my old Synology NAS. Here in Australia the PNY CS2241 which is a Gen4 x 4 drive, is excellent value - the 4TB is usd $180 before local taxes so much better value than many others. I could not find any data online about its performance in 3rd party enclosures but the general reviews were favourable so I decided to bite the bullet and buy one.

I am happy to report on first use today its speed tests are running at 93% of the speed of the WDBlack SN770 - so heaps fast and towards the practical limits of T3/T4 drives on a Mac.

Definitely a good price. Curious what people think of the PNY drives vs others. I've been eyeing the 4TB WD but its $300 plus enclosure. Still cheaper than 2 2TB drives + enclosures.

Hadn't come across that one, can you post the actual figures you are getting please. For anyone else coming after it doesn't have DRAM if that matters to you. (At least as far as I can find https://www.pcworld.com/article/620019/pny-cs2140-nvme-ssd-review-fast-everyday-pcie-3-storage.html )

Wow...there is SO much to read here and so much to sort through. I think I'll get two Acasis TBU401 enclosures.

I have a Mac Studio M2 Ultra on the way. I have two Samsung 970 EVO Plus NVMEs (2tb each) and will be using both drives as all-day work drives for audio samples and video. These will not be RAID, thus following the advice here of getting a separate enclosure for each to get 4 lanes and the fastest speeds.

Any reason not to get two Acasis TBU401s for the kind of work mentioned above?

Hi 3 different PNY models referred to
cs2241 - the one I bought/tested and PNY says is capable of 5000/4200 MB/s read write
(see https://www.impulsegamer.com/pny-cs2241-m-2-2280-nvme-gen-4x…
cs2140 - an older model (someone posted a review link above) PNY says up to 3600/3200 MB/s read write
cs3140 - as mentioned above and PNY says 7500/6850 MB/s
but of course with the Mac T3/T4 and Acasis style enclosure those speeds are unobtainable and the SSD itself is not the limiting factor.

No that's the best way to do it, keep them on seperate busses (are they all seperate busses on the Studio?)

You can also get a Thunderbolt PCIe enclosure and a PCIE cards to run them all on the same thunderbolt if that's your thing, but I think your idea is better
