Makes sense, Tim knows they aren't coming out with much new things when it comes to iPhone hardware these days and if there weren't any iMessage barriers in place a lot more people would leave for Android devices. They are basically trying to lock people in instead of coming out with fun new hardware.

I can understand not jumping on RCS but if they cared about their users they'd make an iMessage app for Android.
Even though the trends are showing people leaving android for iPhones?

Sounds like an off the cuff reply that wasn't vetted by PR lol. Not a good look.
I think when you are at the top of your game, you are entitled to the occasional snark comment here and there. People like Elon Musk have certainly gotten away with a lot more.
We’ll continue using WhatsApp for now but this attitude from Tim Cook sucks.
Sounds like problem solved then.

We are an iPhone family.

Also not a Facebook family.

But are forced to use What’s App because our iPhones don’t support RCS and half the phones in the USA aren’t iPhones.

It’s not possible for us to buy 1/2 of our contacts an iPhone.

We really would get What’s App off our phones and be Facebook free except for Apple’s position on RCS.

Also, even though we use them near exclusively, both iMessage and FaceTime could use some improvements to gain some features of what’s app, Skype, etc. to be more competitive in both messaging and telephony.

It’s a bit Marie Antoinette and let them eat cake. A multibillion dollar company wanting people to buy a product of theirs because they want to eek every last bit of money out of those in less privileged situations.

What happens if they cannot afford to buy their parents new iPhones? And just want to be able to have that convenience which is easy for Apple to implement.

Wow. I know you said "a bit" but to compare a cell phone company to a murderous dictator is a stretch even when caveated.

As for "those in less privileged situations" that is quite the weak attempt to turn SMS vs RCS into some sort of class struggle of the proletariat. Someone doesn't want to or can't afford to buy their parents new phones? That person can:
a) continue to text them the way they always have *gasp*
b) download any of the dozens of FREE messenger apps on the devices. Whatsapp for example has more users worldwide (including in less privileged countries) than iMessage. Signal is great for those who value privacy.

I switch back and forth between apple and android quite often. How did I communicate with my apple family when I was on my pixel 4 a few years ago? I just had people download Whatsapp. Problem solved. When I was on android, RCS was coming out and frankly was already DOA. RCS Sucks and is DOA because:
  • Currently no encryption enabled
  • Of all of my 20+ android friends, only ONE of them could actually receive RCS. This is a combination of android phone makers never bothering to upgrade their phones, carriers being difficult.
  • If my friend has to switch from their default messenger to google messenger for RCS, they may as well download Whatsapp or Signal.
  • Nobody outside of the US or Canada cares about RCS anyway because they have migrated to messenger apps years ago due to expensive per sms pricing in their countries.

Daily reminder Google's implementation of RCS runs through Google servers, and Google has tested and is now ready to inject ads into RCS messages passing through their servers.

And morons on lagdroid cheered when Google took RCS away from the carriers...

Why would anyone in business want to invest resources in that business that ultimately loses them business?
That would be the definition of insanity.

Tim Cook in "proving that he is not insane" fiasco! :)

Yes we know why Apple doesn’t want to do this. There’s just a better way of saying it than the way Tim answered.

"Buy your mom an iPhone"
Wow, maybe his mom has an opinion of her own about which phone she wants. Apple is so arrogant sometimes, and it clearly starts at the top
We don’t care what phone his mom wants. Buy her an iPhone is the correct response. Can’t cater to everyone’s needs when the obvious solution is right there.

Tone is everything. If he was trying to be funny it actually kinda is in a smart-alecky way. He's a company guy - what a surprise!

We live in such ridiculous times when this "problem" is conflated to be ageist, sexist, uncompetitive, etc etc...there are truly dozens of free cross-platform alternatives to Messages.

I don't know what else to say about that but the picture is certainly fitting.

Although others have done articles on the issues with RCS, I'd really like to see Apple put out a position paper on why the aren't adopting RCS.

"The lack of RCS support on iOS makes it much harder for iOS and Android users to communicate normally, forcing them to use third-party messaging platforms such as WhatsApp or Telegram."
Can someone explains me what makes it harder to communicate with Android users? The only difference I see is the green bubbles.

Green bubble means the message was sent through SMS instead of the internet. SMS is outdated. Messages aren't encrypted, group messaging is a nightmare, video and image files in piss quality, has no read receipts, and more.

RCS fixes all the problems with green texts and then some, bringing them closer to iMessage. Which is exactly why Apple won't do it and Tim says snide comments like this, because keeping iPhone on the dated SMS system is a gatekeeping measure to keep you locked in to the walled garden and to peer pressure those around you to get iPhones too just for iMessage.

I think iMessage gets looked at wrong and I am expecting some people getting upset about what I am about to say. iMessage has a more unique beginning compared to most messaging platforms where it began as an alternative to sms that was just integrated into their messaging app rather than getting a separate iMessage and standard sms app. This happened in 2011..

Now most other apps do not have (I say most because of course there are far too many to know how every single one works) a fall back to possibly still send a message like the Apple Messages app. If I do not have wifi and no cell data signal I cannot send a message via FB Messenger, Discord, whatever else, where the Messages app has a fall back and maybe I can send via sms if I just have signal but no data or too weak of data.

This bring me to Google (since they are the big pushers of RCS) released in 2019 a whole 8 years after iMessage and suddenly Google wants everyone like Apple and carriers to support RCS when there are limitations still. It is a system that needs all carriers to be accepting of (to have no issues on the carrier side), it isn't even actually supported by all phones (thinking worldwide), and the biggest drawback to me is the way I understand it..RCS requires you to keep your number so in an event you change carriers and your number cannot be ported then you would have to start whole new conversations once you get RCS setup on the new number and so RCS will instantly already be not good to the iPhone users because they couldn't use their other devices to respond because those devices are connected to iMessage conversations via a linked email.

Much lower quality (basically unuseable) video and picture. The other stuff is mainly cosmetic, but the fallback standards of MMS are atrocious.
