Its sad that someone with his influence would behave like that its an insult to all the moms out there and he shoud be ashamed of it Apple says they care about people and consumers this response says otherwise we only care about people who wants to buy and iphone everyone else screw you makes me just want to get rid of my iphone for good s22 Ultra seems good right now

I think it’s a bit ridiculous that in 2022 I’m still limited to sending someone a text or image if they don’t have an iPhone.
And yet Android can't even do that properly. My daughter has an Android phone, a recent acquisition. It literally refuses to send a picture MMS if you're in wifi. You have to toggle off the wifi and force it to send over Cellular. It doesn't even do this for you automatically. Honestly I don't know how people seriously defend Android when it's that inept.

I see people saying Steve Jobs would've said the same or worse.

Impossible to say obviously. But Apple used to embrace open standards - iChat on the Mac used the open standard Jabber vs. creating their own standard so it was interoperable for example. Obviously SMS is a standard as well but RCS is better in every way. SMS needs to die and Apple is keeping it around because they don't want Android users to have a good experience when chatting with iPhone users. That's incredibly petty.

It's a shame a solution can't be figured out. I hope this makes others realize Apple has zero altruistic properties beyond those that make them a profit, they are a business after all and beholden to their share holders.

Although if Apple was altruistic and wanted to open up the messaging market they are in a bad place. RCS as it exists today is a proprietary Google solution, the carriers, due to their own greed, abandoned it long ago. Apple incorporating Googles RCS would give Google too much control.

On the other hand if they made an Android iMessages app then they might open themselves to anti competitive issues, although this may easier to see in the US where so many are on iMessage already.

What sucks is how Apple took away the choice of even using 3rd party apps like Bluebubbles and AirMessage by taking away the physical SIM slot.

What puzzles me is that instead of being snide and condescending Cook should just explain this so consumers understand its not so black and white. But then again the intelligence level of consumers seems to suffer more with each passing year.

As someone that's been using iPhone since 2007, I will never understand other iPhone users unhinged loyalty to iMessage and "blue bubbles". All my communication is done through Discord/Telegram/Messenger or hell, even IRC lol
I've been a long time Apple user too, and I don't understand the fascination with iMessage either. I've also used android for awhile now too, and iMessage and Messages are just texting to me, I use them both the same way for the same things. Maybe you can do more with RCS and iMessage, but I don't do them I guess.

Apple hates industry standards so the chances of them doing anything pro consumer without being forced by regulators are slim to none. They're still using the stupid lighting port in order to keep selling 10 cent cables for $30 a pop.
That’s false, there are a number of “standards” in the phone. However they want their ecosystem the way they want it. And thankfully lightning is still in the iPhone 14. I don’t pay $30 for a lightning cable. Not even $10.

Give it a year and regulators will force it on him, like they’ve forced USB-C into their iPhones.
Sure, and why not just force Apple to drop macOS and iOS in favor of Windows and Android so we all can have a homogenized experience with no compatibility problems. Developers would especially be happy they wouldn't have to code and debug for two platforms. Users could move their software from PC brand to Apple hardware with ease. Yeah, that’s the ticket, force Apple to assimilate. Problems solved, right?

I don't understand what you are saying here. I use AirMessage, but how is that hurt by taking away the SIM slot? But then again. I use 2 phones rather than switching SIMS...

If the company is not beholden to their customers, they will fail—-the proof is on the pudding.

Bingo.

I don’t see how, can you explain?

Where was Tim snide and condescending?

"Buy your Mom an iPhone". I absolutely love that comment. I'm so glad he didn't hide it behind some made up excuse, if you want the feature, buy the product. Love it.

On a side note, I would like Apple to implement RSC, I hate text groups with green bubbles, someone posts a 30 line message and then I get 4 messages "so and so liked: 30 lines of message"

Tim Cook is honest and earnest (I'm in agreement with GermanSuplex), yet I'm inclined to believe that he just issued a non-denial denial. That said, RCS doesn't stand a chance in Messages if it compromises Apple's vaunted privacy standards.

A very Steve thing to say indeed as others have stated. But Steve’s Apple deserved the ego it took to say this and had the personality needed to do so. Coming from the guy who committed brutal murder on the company’s spirit for profit it just sounds classist and like we need to start getting ourselves Androids like our mothers and not the other way around. I’d rather think of them as a soulless entity with no sense of humor at this point because of what it’s turned into.
Edit: And i’m not saying this because of RCS, I’m European and used iMessage probably once and on accident. Just the general attitude is ugly.

The billion dollar question:

Who is Time Cook?

And to answer your question, he was replying to an inquiry that specifically was about someone's mom.
Yes, I know... I was just stirring the pot to see what shakes loose :)

The privacy excuse doesn't really work here, as RCS is encrypted and SMS is plaintext.

Damn, talk about an egotistical response. People here will praise Tim but “buy your mom an iPhone” sounds so unprofessional and obnoxious.
Nah. He’s making fun of the reporter for being a cheapskate. I’m sure it got a lot of laughs in that room.

"I don't hear our users asking that we put a lot of energy in on that at this point," Cook said

Yeah…why would they bother with it if their customers aren’t asking for it. Non customer’s concerns aren’t that important if they don’t plan on becoming customers.
