Much ado about nothing when just about everyone (apart from US for some reason) just uses whatsapp. I haven't SMS / iMessaged anyone in at least two years, blue or green

Although if Apple was altruistic and wanted to open up the messaging market they are in a bad place. RCS as it exists today is a proprietary Google solution, the carriers, due to their own greed, abandoned it long ago. Apple incorporating Googles RCS would give Google too much control.
Yeah, it's ultimately about greed. But both Google and Apple should push their greed aside to build a messaging solution that works out for the end user. All Google did was mimic iMessage with RCS, there has to be some middle ground between the two companies. Im sure Google would relinquish control if that means they won't have to deal with the blue vs green bubbles dilemma.

Similar to how Apple worked with the industry on USB-C creation... they could do the same in this scenario. But I totally understand why Apple won't.

This has nothing to do with adopting rcs. Privacy is about your pii and extended pii, security has to do with keeping the data in the apple ecosystem safe and apple can only encrypt what it has control over.

I’m not participating but thanks. Apple doesn’t want to participate Probably because google controls rcs.

You know nothing about RCS I see.

Advocating bullying is not a nice look, especially for something as trivial as choice of messaging app.

This is an issue that needs to be addressed at the kid/parent level just like any other bullying.

For me the issue isn't the green bubbles, I could care less and if Apple and Google came up with a solution I'd happily be the green bubble all day long, this should only be an issue with kids and not with grown-a$$ adults. My issue is that when I send pictures and video they are so heavily compressed they are nigh unusable and worthless, and participation in group chats is neutered.

I only use iMessage or Signal. I have a few contacts who i exchange SMS with but very rarely.

I don't really care what other options are out there until I can assure myself that they are secure and encrypted.

I haven't been able to track down the video... yet, but it almost sounds like he said this in jest and was trying to introduce laughter and maybe even lighten the conversation. If that is the case, then the headline is well... a little off. If it was said with the same look and feel as the picture presented in this article by MR... That brings on a whole slew of other questions and the scorn being thrown his way is warranted.

The lack of encryption throughout the RCS system (let alone whether it is using a Google or other off device key vs not) is the best reason to just say no to it.

Some people don't want corporations, let alone groups like the CSP/DFS/FSB/CIA/FBI/NSA/SEBIN etc, to have unfettered access to private communications despite the fact that some of them would like to profit from doing so.
Is this a real post? So just say no to it stick to completely unencrypted everyone has access SMS. Make sure you are using Http on all websites too.

Maybe you meant use WhatsApp like the rest of the world because Facebook are angels and not literally running a business model that relies on selling your data.

I really don’t get why so many people here think third-party chat tools are the solution. Not only are the companies involved usually awful, the “free” ones have a business model of data-mining and advertising. Why would I ever want to drag others into getting yet another account with such companies? Even if they weren’t laissez-faire capitalism monsters, it’s still another proprietary system dependent on acquiring an app and making an account.

SMS/MMS needs to be replaced industry-wide, but the mobile monopolies (three monstrous companies isn’t competition) think they’re in the business of selling contracts, rather than providing services, and so they won’t lift a finger to improve services universally. If it costs them any investment, they’ll refuse to do it.

what'sapp...
why RCS protocol?, why not Signal protocol?, or Whatsapp protocol? or FB Messanger protocol?...or why to bother with this **** anyway?

But then why did Apple integrate SMS into iMessage? The rest of my family is just not going to buy an iPhone, mainly because none of them can afford it. They also don't have SMS credits any more, so I have one-way SMS to them. As an Apple user I'd like to have RCS included alongside SMS in iMessage (maybe with purple bubbles).

Really if Apple e-mail can talk to non-Apple e-mail, and iMessage can talk with SMS, why not RCS.... Maybe then SMS as an old insecure standard can be shut off.

Because the carriers adopted RCS as a coming replacement for SMS. SMS is where it is still as it is universally supported by everyone including Apple and carriers.

I had been an Android phone user for many years but the majority of my relatives moved over to iphones because they looked 'cool' (their words not mine) and thus they would all use the iphones own messaging app to text one another but they couldn't text me things like reminders or family get togethers because iOS and Android messaging are not compatible and to make matters awkward my releatives would not install 3rd party messaging apps so they could text me on my Android phone. Yep, you guessed it, I had to move over to iphone.

I think this is exactly the scenerio Tim Cook is looking for because it would mean more and more people moving away from Android onto Apple. If it happened to me I am sure it has happened to thousands of others and continues to happen to others also. More money in Apples pocket isn't it.

It’s not Apple’s fault that Google messed about for years jumping from one messenger app to another and didn’t come up with anything good. Now they want Apple to bend over backwards to bail them out.
Apple claims they care about privacy and information but sticks to unsecure SMS.

Weak answer "Tim Apple". Just integrate RCS into the Messages app. Apple claims they care about privacy and information but sticks to unsecure SMS. #GetTheMessage

For a seemingly reserved and good PR at all times kind of guy, this is one of the dumber things I've heard any CEO say.

What are the poors complaining about? The new iphone in Europe is only 1500€, jUsT bUy EvErYoNe YoU kNoW a NeW iPhOnE.
No, it’s not. That’s the Pro. The regular 14 is cheaper. Still damn expensive, so no need to bend the truth.
the only way we can stop this is by stop buying them. I encourage all iphone users form not upgrading and they will learn to drop the prices. If we keep buying, they will keep increasing prices.

Give it a year and regulators will force it on him, like they’ve forced USB-C into their iPhones.
Force an insecure, technologically inferior standard?

This isn’t email. Apple has end-to-end encryption and has zero interest exposing its customers to targeted spam interrupting their accounts by using a compromised solution.

Video Conferencing software suites aren’t interoperable. The consumer can use a third party messaging solution to communicate with Android friends now.
