Question regarding Androids and lag…

Could this be attributed (even partially) to the fact that many device owners do not seem to engage in periodic maintenance?

Generally I find that people install stuff, forget about things and just keep right on going. There never seems to be any attempt to clean up.

I know with iOS that Apple intends for this to not be something you're supposed to think about, but there are a number of apps on the iTunes store that are maintenance oriented.

I have one that I got a long time ago that recovers space on the filesystem. I've used it stock. I'm jailbroken though so I have other means such as iCleaner Pro.

Periodically I'll use both to maximize performance. But stock, there's ways to do things with iTunes as well such as getting rid of your "Other" space.

So, I'm wondering if this is brought over to Android? Do people just use these devices and not think about maintenance?

It's Android, which is a bit more open so there has to be apps in the store that allow for periodic maintenance right?

And if so does this maintenance reduce or eliminate lag? Or is this simply because of the hardware?

What I've noticed, is that with android devices, you have more responsibility in the sense that you have to go over the device maintenance tab and hit "optimize device" (at least on Samsung) which frees up Ram and cache which pretty much solves the performance issues.

With Apple devices, it's more automatic in the sense that apps AND the device itself will restart on it's own at random points to clear out all the junk.

I've experienced that many times with my iPhone 7+.

iPhones will get a little funky with performance if you don’t do a full restore at least once a year. Stability goes down and the memory gets devoured by “other” crap in large quantities.

I've had an iPhone 6 since it came out, while I got my S7, my sister has been using it. The only thing wrong with it is the cracked screen that hasn't been fixed yet - other than that, I ran it against my iPhone 7 and they both ran pretty much at the exact speed. Nearly exactly the same.

I compared the 6 with the S7 and the S7 was laggy, it wasn't as seamless as the iPhone that's a year older than it. I loved both my S7 and my iPhones but it's just a fact that Android devices don't hold up for as long as iPhones do.

What are people doing with their phones that this amount of power is necessary?

I use my phone for very basic tasks that the processor in a flip phone could handle.

Surely very few people are actually using their iPhones as a primary device to do work where this type of thing is necessary.

And if that is the case then why, other than as a marketing point, is this being promoted?

People bitch at me because I buy the highest capacity model and never use even half of the space I get, but people buy iDevices with super powerful processors and never get close to using a fraction of the power they provide.

And I don't consider watching videos to be a neccesary use.

4K @ 60fps encoding HEVC.

Only recently (year or so) have DSLR cameras capable of such dropped below the 2000 dollar mark. Many of these cameras lean heavily toward pros. While admittedly DSLR cameras offer many more features and benefits (color and dynamic range) the processing power involved for 4K 60fps encoded using HEVC was a limitation reserved for $10K+ cameras a couple years ago.

Samsung recently updated the Note 8 specs to include 4k 60fps. Realistically I would image they are just going to use h264 resulting in lower quality and/or larger file sizes (probably a combination of both). If not, and the Note 8 was capable of 4k 60fps from the start then they were just holding onto the feature for the next Galaxy phone until Apple annouced it.

I'm curious how Apple is going to deal with the file format when moving the videos off the phone. Computers it's fine, most PCs can decode HEVC in software. That is great for people editing and exporting in a different format. However what about a transfer for sharing locally? Transcode on the fly? Error?

See you in a few months when the novelty to try something different wears off.

Been there myself. Lasted about 3 months on Android before wanting iOS back.

Same happened to me . Though I returned back cause I did not like Samsung face Id and Poor placement of finger scanner. Same reason I would leave the X for a 7 or 8 or SE. I'll stick with apple while touchid is supported. All my idevices use he home button , hence don't want the x experience.

This is the biggest myth about Samsung devices

Even iPhones can suffer performance issues. It all depends how you use your phone and the amount you have downloaded
It's more to do with support I think. My iPhone 5 still runs fine with the latest software five years after purchase! If Samsung want to charge Apple high prices then they need to work on their software updates and customer support. Their hardware is already fantastic :)

There would be no perfect phone than the S8 running iOS (Samsung prices too!) - with fingerprint sensor embedded into the screen instead of on the back

1. My phone has never restarted itself without my input (iPhone 7 Plus)
2. Having to manually press an 'optimise' button sounds like a very poorly made OS
3. RAM should be as full as possible, else why have it?
4. The OS should have its own cache management system, like iOS

Uh huh, sounds like all the people who says there's no such things as frame drops in iOS. Hose things have happened to me on every iPhone I've ever had. Even my MBP will do it from time to time.

Check out Flossy Carter on YouTube. He does amazing, in depth reviews, and he brings up the exact same points as I did.

Show me a button in macOS saying 'Optimise' that magically makes things faster. I have never used such a thing
Disk Utility…iFreeMem…Onyx…Terminal (with Purge command) as examples.

Well I was sitting patiently with my 6S to see what Apple would announce last week.

The iPhone X is just ridiculous in terms of price (and the cutout) so I wouldn't even consider that.
The iPhone 8, I just don't see this as an upgrade from my 6S, aside from the camera and a couple of spec bumps.

I've been tempted with the Samsung S8 for a while and decided to take the plunge on Friday, replaced my 6S and Apple Watch Series 2 with S8 and Gear 3 Frontier.

The S8 is just a gorgeous piece of tech, the screen is outstanding and just a pleasure to use, I like the look of the Frontier, looks more like a real watch and it can be set to always on. I've only used them for a couple of days but so far I'm happy I made the right decision.

Don't get me wrong I'm not an Apple hater, they just didn't do enough to resist the temptation from Samsung. :)

If you were completely secure in your decision, you wouldn't have posted a thread in an iPhone forum fishing for validation.

As always, you'll be back.

All 3rd party as I expected
Are you sure?

Because Disk Utility and Terminal are Apple.

In any case, here's my point. If Apple was so good at this then there would not be a market for these tools.

But there is.

There’s certainly a market for borderline scam apps like Mackeeper which use scare tactics and manipulation to entice a download

That's one we can argue too as there are two versions of that with the same name. The scam, and an app that actually does something useful. The scam trades on that app's name.

But in the spirit of your comment I will agree that there is plenty of potential for manipulation.

If you like fake, oversaturated pictures, then sure. If you prefer close to life colors, the iPhone will be better. To be fair, I’m fine with the oversaturated look and so are most people, but it’s not “better”.
This has been my experience with the S8. I absolutely hate how the photos look fake and oversaturated. I have stopped taking photos with the S8 because of it. I don't want to mess around with the settings either. I cannot wait to switch back to the iPhone but can't decide between the 8+ or the X.

OP - I’ve just made the switch too. It will take a bit of getting used to but I recommend the following apps.
1. MyMSM - receive and send SMS on you mac, iPad.
2. Samsung SideSync. Recieve all you phone notifications on your Mac/PC
Good to point out alternatives +1
