For the whole package, this is good. I paid £45 for an active brodit mount last month so the bundle price is good. Although they will have to release the cradle without the apps unless they want a riot.

It says you get the App with the dock, however it does not say if you also get the map(s) as well...
It does say you need 1.2GB of free space on your iPhone, which interestingly enough is about the size of the US version, the EU version is bigger (1.44GB). So, will I get the US version with the cradle if I buy it from an European store ? Would be kind of useless.

I would not be surprised if the app is purchased with a promo code or an iTunes credit to the value of the app. That way, if you already have the app, or want to use another GPS app, you can use the credit for other iTunes purchases. Apple wins, consumer spends.

Another Opportunity for NAVIGON

Navigon listen up!

Now that more picures have been released of the TomTom Car Kit I can see an issue which Navigon can get another one over on TomTom.

The power cable to the Car Kit goes to the base of the mount which rotates.

This is messy - especially if, like me, people actually want to permanently mount their kit and not have to go through the pain of remounting everytime they get into the car. It would be best if all cables connected to the foot of the kit making it easy to route cables into a less obtrusive and tidier form.

I have always been a TomTom fan - buying them for all my family (it made several Christmass shopping trips dead easy!). However, I am now switching to Navigon for the iphone. Don't get me wrong - I still like TomTom a lot but I have never liked their business model of charging you for every little update and every added service. Navigon seem a lot less greedy and understand that persistently adding value makes us very happy indeed. Having held back until TomTom for the iphone was released to consider GPS Navigiation on my iphone I eventually went with Navigon and have been very pleasantly surprised with the application. Navigon still have a few 'TomTom' tricks missing (navigate to point on map, easy avoid road block, full post code search) but the way they have developed the app so far and the value they have added with free updates makes me a great deal more confident moving forward. The 'Announce', wait, wait, wait and wait again strategy of TomTom has really turned me off.

Sorry TomTom but you have lost a core, long term fan.

Seems the thing that's getting everyone worked up is the inclusion of the app in the price (with no concession to those that already bought the app, as yet).

It's only a matter of time before someone uses the headline:

"The App that rocked the Cradle"

Remember you saw it here first!

Of course I can say that because I held off getting the app until the cradle came out anyway. Yes it is still a little pricey, but I think it's worth it to me.

Ironic, though, that I have been agonising over how to move my iPhone app (vConqr) over to my company name without making current owners have to pay again - and that's just for a £2.29 app.

TomTom just seems like it's making mistakes with every turn. This dock should be no more then $50 US if you already own the software. We'll see how this pans out.
It will likely cost less than that, if you've already purchased the app - I imagine an "early adopter" deal will soon be announced.

lol. This is TomTom. There will be no price drop and if they're the kings of making people pay twice for the same thing - just ask anyone who bought an x30 device when TT said that the HD Traffic adapter would be available within months for it (they changed their mind and decided to release an entire new satnav instead.. and put the price up for good measure).

Oh, and don't forget £75 a year to keep the maps up to date...

Need to do something for those who bought the App already.

They will only end up angering customers if they do not.

I only bought the app last week and I'll be extremely p***ed if they don't offer the the dock at a reduced rate

The 'did you notice' paragraph makes this whole page confusing as further down 'what's in the box' it doesn't mention the app. £100 for just the cradle is a little steep but not that far off the mark. I was looking at a Conencts2 unit to get my music into my Peugeot RD4 car stereo. This sets me back £40. The cradle has this function plus built in GPS (could be another £30) all combined with a cradle (£20).

I bought the app when it was released for £60 so IF the cradle comes with the app, I'm obvisouly not interested at the full price as buying the app twice is ridiculous.

As an aside, since I've been using the app on a standard windcreen mount, I have noticed that it sometimes takes a few seconds to re-orientate the screen after a turn. This has given me a few scary moments waiting for my next instruction, especially if there's another turn directly after. So, enhanced GPS sounds very appealing.

for a second I thought it was a great idea as it says it includes GPS so 1st Gen iphones would be able to use it! then it's not bad for £100 but I see it doesn't so it seems quite pointless it's a cradle with an ariel!
:)

Confusing...

On the french AppStore, 2 things are a bit confusing :
1. "Remarque : le support du kit de voiture est compatible avec tous les modèles d’iPhone, mais l’application du kit de voiture  ne fonctionne qu’avec l’iPhone 3GS et l’iPhone 3G."

(In english : the cradle of the car kit is compatible with all Iphone models, but the application of the car kit work only with Iphone 3GS or 3G)

2. "Contenu du coffret

Kit voiture TomTom
Application de navigation TomTom pour iPhone
Disque adhésif
Documentation"

(In english : content : TomTom car kit, TomTom navigation app for Iphone, adhesive disk, documentation).

1. What do they mean by "the application of the car kit" ? Is it the management of bluetooth connection, is it the TomTom navigation app, is it the management of the GPS chip integrated in the kit ?
2. Ok, the TomTom navigation app is included. But with which maps (France, Europe, ...) ? What if I already bought the app ?

Well, I don't understand why the UK GBP price is the same as the Euro price, particularly given that VAT is generally lower in the UK (15% vs. 21% here in Belgium). Further, do we know which version of the TomTom navigation application you get? For example, does the UK version come with just maps for UK & Ireland, or does it get the "full" Western Europe version that I am sure the rest of Europe gets?

I'm moving back to the UK later this year but I think I might well get the TomTom Car Kit in Belgium before I go even though I won't have an iPhone to use it with until I get back to the UK. It sounds like the price will be better here and I might get more for my money.

Cradle does come with App AND maps via a voucher code

Here's a conversation I've just had directly with the Apple store via online chat...

* You are chatting with Maria, an Apple Expert

*

Hi, my name is Maria. Welcome to Apple!
*

Maria: Good morning
*

Maria: How may I help you today?
*

You: I have a question about the TomTom Car Kit for iPhone 3GS
*

Maria: I'm happy to assist with that.
*

You: Great. I've just placed an order. However, looking at it closely, it says it comes with the app. Does this include the maps too (i.e. British Isles or Europe)?
*

Maria: I'm happy to assist with that.
*

Maria: Let me see if I can get more information.
*

You: Thanks
*

Maria: You're welcome.
*

You: BTW. There's a lot of confusion on Macrumors.com over if it comes with just the app or if maps are included. Whatever info you manage to get, it maybe worth updating the store entry to clarify what is provided along with the cradle itself.
*

Maria: I am not seeing specifically if that includes British Isles.
*

Maria: The information I am finding it may require an update.
*

You: So the app is free on the App store and we're looking at £99 just for the cradle then?
*

Maria: There is a cost for the App.
*

You: British Isles is £59 on the app store plus the cradle at £99? total is £158. That's where the confusion is. Because it says the app comes with the cradle, but you can't buy just the app on itunes. Either British isle or Europe at £79.
*

Maria: The Car Kit you see on the online Apple Store is just the hardware.
*

Maria: I am checking further one moment.
*

You: Yes, sorry I know that, but it does say it comes with the app. Well the only app on itunes is for British isles or Europe (£59 or £79). itunes does not have the app on it's own. Hence confusion all around!)
*

Maria: You get both the TomTom navigation app for your iPhone 3GS or 3G and the docking kit to hold your iPhone securely in place on your dashboard or windscreen.
*

You: Yep. I know it has the navigation app, but what one? British isles or Europe?
*

Maria: Sorry for the delay let me continue checking.
*

You: Take a look at https://www.macrumors.com/ and see all the comments. It is not clear. £99 seems very expensive for a cradle if it does not come with maps!
*

You: No problem.
*

You: Can you see what I'm trying to say?
*

Maria: Yes I am checking into that now.
*

Maria: The App is included with the kit. There will be a code to download within iTunes.
*

You: Ah! Presume we're have a choice of Bristish Isles or Europe? If going for Europe we make up the extra cost ourselves?
*

Maria: The TomTom app for iPhone 3G and 3GS users includes a continental map of Europe or map of UK & Ireland from Tele Atlas.
*

You: Fantastic. That makes it a more affordable option and good price point. Thanks for your help Maria.
*

Maria: You're welcome.
*

You: Have a good day.

So that answer's that question then. £99 for the cradle and app with a choice of maps via an iTunes voucher code!!!

Now I'm all kinds of confused.

I decided to wait before I bought a GPS APP, to see what this TomTom dock would cost. Of course, because of my waiting, I missed the awesome Navigon Sale. Had I known Navigon would release a bunch of updates (Text to speech, Live Traffic), I wouldn't have had the same hesitation.

Now the TomTom dock comes out. If it includes the application, then it may be tempting. However, will TomTom ever update their app with text to speech and live traffic???)

Navigon's dock is rumored to be begging for $50! $50 for a dock that doesn't do anything but carry a phone is quite pricey.

It says you get the App with the dock, however it does not say if you also get the map(s) as well... Of course the app is pretty much useless without the maps

"The App" is a version of the application with a fixed set of maps (i.e. TomTom UK & Ireland has the UK & Ireland Maps).

Other maps are another app, a bit annoying though.

Wirelessly posted (iPhone: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7C144 Safari/528.16)

Let's see what it will be when it arrives in the US Store. I wonder how they are selling the app with it.

TomTom Car kit on UK apple store

On the Tom Tom iPhone mini site it says:

Will the app be bundled with the car kit when that becomes available?

When available, the TomTom car kit will be sold without the TomTom app. The TomTom app can only be purchased via the Apple App stores.

Doesn't help me...

I'll need a stand alone Tom Tom, as I love to text and surf the web on my iPhone as I drive everyday. I'm posting this from my car right now. Tom Tom must be crazy to......(CRASH):)
