On the Tom Tom iPhone mini site it says:

well... looks like tomtom & apple need to keep in sync and either one of them update their site to give the correct info plus info about buying the car kit standalone for those who've already purchased the app.

i'm sure it will be resolved in a few days time...

I'm sure it's an error of the store description.

There's no way -technically speaking- to sell the app and the dock together, unless Apple has made something specific for TomTom (I don't think so).

* Maria: The App is included with the kit. There will be a code to download within iTunes.

Sounds good, now to just wait for it to hit Australia and a few reviews of it in action.

I'd have thought it would be a great feature to have, now that more apps utilise specialised hardware that you have to buy separately.

They are not selling the app and cradle together. The app will be via an iTunes voucher redemption code. Take a look at the transcript in my previous post.

Damn

I just bought the tomtom app for my iPod touch because I was expecting this, and now it seems I can only buy that thing for waaaay too much money, because the app is included. And the next problem is, it doesn't even support the ipod touch, even though they said it would be

If you have a "Made For iPod" accessory using the 3.0 accessory frameworks, and the accessory is for a particular app, you can most certainly "bundle" the 2 (the app isn't on a DVD or anything, you still download it, but it's included in the accessory price). The information is given to you when you go through the long process of getting your accessory approved.

So, what you're saying is that it will be a generic iTunes voucher?

If so, that will at least be ok for people that have bought the app already as we'll be able to purchase something else on iTunes.

It's not ideal, but at least we won't have two versions of the same TomTom app!

Highly doubt it, I've had iTunes vouchers that only download one product.

Sorry, got no info other than it will be via a redemption voucher code for those buying the £99 package. This is from an Apple sales rep. However, I'm sure TomTom are not expecting users to buy the same app twice. Neither are they expecting users to buy a cradle for £99 (make your own assumption on dollar conversion) if you already own the app from the iTunes store. Whether this be via a redemption code for those early adopters or a separate and cheaper cradle package, I guess we'll find out soon enough.

I was seriously considering getting one of these but I'm not so sure now. At least a stand-alone will still work if Apple changes the shape of the iPhone next summer. It's a lot of money for something that could be written off in nine months.

Again, $99 dollars is the right price point. Anything over that and it won't sell (well). If it does, I'll eat my feet!

Good Deal

I don't know why everyone is saying this is a bad deal. I think it is a great deal! You have your GPS, Phone, Internet, iPod, Email, Games, and so on all in one device. This is where the future is going! Apple needs to continue to focus developing items like the iPhone. Having a multiple function device that is actually fully featured for ALL functions is a great!

Granted there has been a lot of complaints on the App store rating the TomTom application as not a great buy. If it wasn't for this, I would order it the minute they release the Car Kit in the US. But with these negitive reviews on the application makes me a bit more stand offish. I don't need a navigation system right this minute so I can wait and see what happens.

For the poeple that are complaining about the price, I don't understand. In the US the TomTom application is $100. That means it would be $64 for the car kit which is not bad when it comes with a speaker, handsfree, and power adapter.

Note: Why is the link broken that goes to the UK store?

No more Tom Tom Kit on European Stores... Probably they are fixing the "navigation software included" mistake

I talked to a representative from the Italian Apple Store and she told me that an email message received a few minutes ago clarifies the situation: there's no navigation software included...

Could be they are updating it to clear up the confusion where they reference 'includes app'? They should really say 'includes app and 1 set of maps via an iTunes redemption code'.

Hey, something's stuck to your window

There are much better ways to ghetto rig your car for GPS than some mount with a huge suction cup stuck to your windshield. But I guess if you're cruising around in a clunker it doesn't matter anyway.

Some people don't want to "guetto rig" their cars, they might just want a simple way to use the iPhone as a GPS in their cars.

I think when you consider this makes your iPhone a fully fledged, and more elegant TomTom device (with a much better touch screen), which allows you to take calls hands free, play music into your car stereo, have full GPS etc, then £99 really isn't that much to ask.

Those devices separately would cost quite a bit more, and there'd be several of them, all requiring power and hanging wires etc.

I'll be getting one! :)

If GPS is included in the dock, why doesn't it work with the iPhone 1G? (it says 3G and 3GS only). Or the iPod touch?

Either it's an error in the placement or the whole integrated GPS thing is just BS (it probably is; people have been using it fine until now, right?)

Ok are they for real? I never make a comment and it took me three times to remember my password. Umm 99.00 for the app and 147.00 for the doc? Who ever buys in to this...... Ask them if they throw in the rape shower for free!

This can't be ...... lol!

lame

This is so lame. This whole Tom Tom thing is ridiculous; they are trying to force their way into a piece of hardware that is millimeters away from making turn by turn gps nav a 'standard' feature...cutting out the entire niche tom tom has carved out.

One would think they would do this at a reasonable price but they are just too darn greedy.

The days of an entire company dedicated to gps nav are numbered, and for tom tom to survive they should instead adapt their business model instead of forcing it into iphone with such high prices. Maybe sign a deal with apple and have it stock on the iphone, or drop the price. If it as reasonable almost EVERYONE would buy this.

PS everyone send as many pics as you can tomorrow at 10am lets try and crash the system.

dock+app for £99 is okish...

i do hope tomtom sell the dock seperately for those who have purchased the tomtom app already... for around £40...
