under sys info, it shows that TRIM is on, but i was never able to do the "erase free space" as this wasn't available as an option? (button was greyed out on disk utilities)
i have an 10" MBA late 10' model. running 10.7

so while it says it's on, is it actually working? given i wasn't able to do the erase free space command?

It will start working from now.

Think of TRIM like, a vaccuum cleaner or something.
And your disk drive as a room.
And your files as furniture.

When you get a vacuum cleaner (install TRIM patch) your floor is dirty (disk blocks not TRIMed).

So you want to clean the floor (erase Free Space will trigger TRIM on the free blocks)

Then you still have dust under your furniture (your files) that won't be cleaned (TRIM'ed) until you remove or move the furniture (files)

So if your room is full of furniture (disk full of files) you won't get it cleaner (TRIM'ed) that much unless you free up space or better, format.

hope that helps, lol

haha! good analogy! i'm curious why i can't erase free space? look at the screenshot, i have about 20gb free on my mba, and yet i can't erase the free space. my room shouldn't have that much furniture in it no?

I am having a simular problem. I have a 120GB 6G. I enabled Trim. I Have 64GB free space. When I attempted to erase free space, It got to almost completely done and then said that I didn't have enough free space and my SDD was at ZeroKB once. I then hit skip. After a three minute freeze everything went back to normal. I am doing something wrong?

No. That is how it works and that message is normal.

Oh, Thanks. What about the freezing part at the end while it's skipping? It ranges from 3-7 minutes.

Yep... it kind of just site there a minute or two. Remember this is creating one large file that fills the entire drive then deletes the file. Just let it sit and run.

Alot of people get problems with Erase free space, because it hangs the computer for quite some time, and some (like me...) turn it off, thinking it crashed. That causes alot of problems, becuase its hard to boot back with 0kb space

So yeah, let it run.

Thanks. How often should your have to erase free space?

Hi, if it's a Brand New SSD do I have to do:

To TRIM your disk after enabling TRIM:
1. Open Disk Utility
2. Select your SSD from the right-hand-side bar
3. Click "Erase" tab
4. Select "Erase Free Space..."
5. Select the fastest method (no need to add extra write cycles by doing it multiple times) and click "Erase Free Space"

If you run Erase Free Space, you should run these commands in the terminal afterwards:
sudo chown root:admin /
sudo kextcache -system-prelinked-kernel
sudo kextcache -system-caches

This:

I think just the once to make up for all the time you weren't using TRIM. I don't think you should need to do it again.

once again, nope.

Granted, I was on my computer all day, I seem to be getting the beach ball every couple of hours. It's lasts anywhere from 2 to 8 minutes. There is also a 50% chance that I get the beach ball after opening the lid of my laptop. Is there something else that I can do that will allow my SSD to play nice with trim, or is disabling it my only option? I have already disabled SMS. Could it be with the SandForce controllers in newer SSD's they really don't need TRIM enabled? I would love your opinions.

I just bought an OWC SSD and customer service told me that there is no need to use TRIM with their SSD, they have a Garbage Collection process embedded into the SSD, thoughts ?

Since disabling TRIM, I have not had any beach balls. But I'm looking to gather as much information as I can to ensure as much life out of my SSD as possible. TRIM seems to be a proven method that works, while the jury is still out on the SandForce controllers. If there is any way I can get TRIM and my SSD to play nice together (No beach balls) I'm going for it. But in time, through searching the forums and talking to folks, If I discover that the newer SSD's just don't need it, I will most certainly disable it.

But it could have a counter productive effect by having TRIM and Garbage Collection working together ?????

Which is what I suspect is happening. But I just want to make sure through seeking as many opinions as I can, and of course conversing with individuals who are more knowledgable than me in this particular matter.

I wonder if this is just a problem on MAc OSX's implementation of TRIm support and not Windows with certain drives.

I have patched my intel 510 series 250GB SSD sata 3, on my macbook pro 2011 but I have not yet run "Erase Free Space". Boot time is now slower than before. How do I remove trim? Thanks!

Launch the patch app again and just click "restore."

How long had it been since you've enabled trim? I remember the first few times I rebooted It took awhile, after that I was back at 16-19 sec.
If your not getting beach balls just try letting it settle. If you've done this already then disabling it will probably set you straight. Like the one guy said, just hit restore, then select default or if you backed up the file, find it and restore that.

I removed Trim and reinstalled once again. Now I have the following boot times with my Intel SSD Series 510, 250GB Sata III:
OS X 10.6.7 on Macbook Pro 2011 - 18.7 seconds.
Window 7 Ultimate - 19.1 seconds.
Both OS - 38.3 seconds
***My Macbook Pro is the i7 2.7GHz and 8GB ram
O.K - Now I'm satisfied and would like to thank Cindori for his efforts. Thanks MAN!!!! My machine is flying??!!:)

How do you guys rate my results compared to... ??

I used to get around 15-16 second boot times when I installed an intel x25-m g2 160gb SSD in my 2010 MBP which had 2.4ghz processor and 8GB RAM. And that was without TRIM enabled, this was back in January, though 10.6.7 may have an effect on boot times.
