In Lion is not possible to erase free space from Macintosh SSD anymore. (Maybe because of the restore partition?)

Any alternatives to it?

you could burn the Lion disk image to a DVD, or USB drive to boot from. Or you could boot from your Snow Leopard DVD, and run the disk utility from there.

With my drive trim does not like to work well I get hangs like it has trouble accessing it or something so you may be better off without it like I have done.

I really appreciate your help I was just about to erase me free space, but considering that previously made my MBA really slow and I don't wanna to re install SN again.

It seems that TRIM is not really necessary for average users. :)

I remember that when this first came out, it was possible to enable TRIM by hand (e.g. type in a few commands in terminal). Is that still possible, or has the whole thing become so complex that we need to apply the patch?

The patcher is automating the by hand process you could still do it in Terminal if you wanted.

My problem is back...

Using Sudo returns no errors, but the problem still persists. Any file I try to copy to my network drive just says it is in use. Any ideas?

try that

Because you probably aren't the owner of those files. Do what Cindori says, which will execute the chmod command with elevated privileges.

Seems to be working now. Just wondering if this will continue to happen with any future files I download.

remember... if ur SSD already has garbage collection in the controller... it's recommended you do not enable TRIM.

Others are very clear in this: TRIM makes GC work better.
They are two completely different technologies and work perfectly well next to each other.

Even better: GC will be more efficient when using TRIM.
GC does NOT KNOW which blocks are 'free' after deleting, only TRIM will help GC to understand which blocks are free and which aren't.

No, it just says "Our in-house testing has also shown that the TRIM Enabler hack has proven to be unreliable. So bottom line, we highly recommend not using TRIM when using OWC SSDs".

If this was a general problem, why wouldn't the SSD manifacturers just disable TRIM support (or make the drive simply ignore TRIM commands)?

trim in general + gc = no problem

trim for osx + gc = slower results

end of story, complain @ apple

Wow, I'm surprised at the vitriol coming from OWC regarding this. It's not like anyone's advocating a competing product to theirs, yet their blog post + comments seem a bit too defensive.

Data speaks volumes. They could market it better than a rant against TRIM. Spin it as "Trim or not, OWC drives shine," and then provide the data to back it up. Assuming that's actually the case. Otherwise, merely recommend against TRIM or the Trim Enabler, and leave it at that. As they currently comment about it makes them seem petty.

I know its probably been asked a million times but this thread is now huge. Does the TRIM hack work well with the Crucial M4?

It seems to work OK on mine, but it's difficult to say. Without running a serious of benchmarks over time, I'm not sure how I'd prove it one way or another.
