sorry, my english is not the best...

i have a vertex 2 180gb and 10.7.1, should i activate trim ?

That drive uses a Sandforce controller and many users report problems with the TRIM hack enabled and this controller. I would not do it.

Your English is quite good.

Good call. I have understood (I think I did), that if your drive has a Sandforce controller if does a pretty good job of drive maintenance. While it is pretty cool that someone came up with a hack that works for some, I would error on the side of caution and not use a hack, but the ultimate decision belongs to the user.

thank you, is a solution in work?

I don't think this is going to change. There seems to be some conflict between Sandforce and the OS X TRIM kext files, and I am not aware of anybody officially on either side even acknowledging the problem.

Sandforce drives do a pretty good job handling this even without TRIM, so I would not worry about it.

Exactly. You can get some info as well from: http://www.anandtech.com/tag/storage

They have pretty comprehensive info regarding SSD's.

Weasleboy, Any Particular version of Sandforce? I believe mine is a SF-1200, and i have been running 10.7 with TRIM since beta, and have had no issues. But should i turn it off?

Also, as part of the Appleseed program, i have 10.7.2 (11C57) installed, and noticed my boot times have increased. Before the pinwheel at boot up would only spin about 2 times, before i see my desktop, now it appears to take longer (more spins of the pinwheel). Any one else witness this as well?

Thanks.

So much for the NDA. :)

I'm using a sandforce as well, without any problems at all.

For optimal boot time execute the following command every now and then:
sudo chown root:admin /
sudo kextcache -system-prelinked-kernel
sudo kextcache -system-caches

People start all kinds of rumors here, over and over again.
Trim always complements garbage collection, always enable it.
There are no know incompatabilities.

Execute the above three lines every now and then for optimal boot times.

not with normal trim itself, but since apple's implementation of TRIM is only for their own drives (which does not have GC), neither you or I can claim it's not going to be problems.

It is really up to you. Many users here have reported system slowness and beach balls with the hack on SF drives. If you are not having any trouble there probably is no harm leaving it on.

You know that trimming is performed in the ssd itself right?
There isn't much logic in the Os which can mess up the ssd. It's the os's responsibility to call the trim command on the drive at its own decression. Apple's implementation is not able I break a drive, because the trimming itself is not done by apple but by the ssd itself.

But a bad command may cause errors in the SSD, which leads to issues. What is known is that several users have faced issues by enabling TRIM with certain SSDs. What is the ultimate reason, well, nobody knows. We only know that for the same SSDs, TRIM works fine in Windows, which suggests that there is something different in Apple TRIM command (or HFS+).

I've just installed a 256GB Samsung 470 SSD in my 13" 2.7ghz MBP. I also have an optibay with the original HDD installed.

I never setup TRIM. I just installed the SSD and installed Lion. (all my software is all installed, its full set)

Do I need to install TRIM using this version and these instructions: http://digitaldj.net/2011/07/21/trim-enabler-for-lion/

Help is appreciated

Thanks.

FYI on this, it appears the extended boot times were due to Parallels 7.0, a fix was made in Parallels 7.0.1, once patched, boot times returned to "amazingly fast"

Any thoughts on when the next release is coming?

SMART stuff needs rework

will probalby release new TrimEnabler in time for10.7.2 with no new features

on new projects now

But is there hope for people with SandForce controllers to ever get TRIM support or should we just forget it?

(I have a Vertex 3)

? trim support?

you have to understand - the trim driver is not mine. it's apples. ask them.
this patch only removes the restraint of only applying trim to apple ssd.

if you still get Trim Support: No
after patch, your SSD does not support TRIM itself, like, in the hardware level.

I understand Cindori, I was not "pushing", just wanted to know your opinion.

I'm happy with my native GC, just would be happier if Apple took their head out of their asses.

lion makes my ssd a kitten

hey folks

i have this SVP100S2256G (kingston ssdnow+) which was beautifully working with 10.6.8: trim enabled, very fast boot/reboot times.

with lion i am experiencing lower performances, especially when it comes to boot/reboot times; trim is correctly installed and i did several times the terminal commands.

anyone else had this issue?

Wondering if anybody else has verify that TRIM is actually working in a stripped RAID set (apple's soft raid). My systems shows trim is enabled on both drives but I am not sure it's working, performance has gone way down. Wondering if anyone else has tested.
