yeah, i'm a prof with a .ac.uk account

what's a unidays account?

i've work in several country but have only been in the UK for 6 years now and haven't heard of unidays

i used to have an NUS account 3 years back or so?

We can now get a staff specific NUS card as of last year as well, but that's not going to help all that much for this as Apple removed their association with NUS in 2015.

Just saw it. I've already done a DD from my account. I guess I could cancel the order and then re-order but I don't think I could contact Apple and ask for the discount, or?
I couldn’t tell you if they would discount if you contact them.
I know dr martens did when I phoned them after I realised last year but I’ve never dealt with Apple in that way.
Can‘t hurt to try though.

Fair enough. I'll ring em in the morning and act usual (absent-minded) and ask.

Call Apple on 0800 048 0408. You can ask for educational pricing and place an order. They will ask you to upload proof of eligibility.
Interesting. I'll give them a call in the morning with my order number.

edit: I just opened a chat, we'll see what happens.

edit 2: No love, will ring em in the morning.

Wow.
The poll looks fairly evenly balanced at the moment. I don’t know why but I was kind expecting things to be hugely in favour of the 7 core GPU MacBook Air.

After some chatting with the Mrs last night she will be having a base £999 Air ordered in January. She only uses video chat apps such as teams and zoom, along with office applications for taking notes and writing essays.
I’m now contemplating the Mini, due to the monitor situation. I only use 2 24 inch 1080p monitors, but they are stacked due to space constraints. Unless it’s possible to use an ultra wide monitor in portrait mode to replace these 2 ?
I don’t do much work outside the house anyway and also have an iPad I prefer taking out rather than my laptop.

I ordered a MacBook Pro with 512GB/16GB and expected delivery between Nov 24 and Nov 26.
My card has been charged already yesterday at 8:30 pm. But this is Germany.

I'm a bit confused because I expected Apple to start charging the earliest in a week from now ?

For complex reasons I’m currently using an old iMac late 2009, patched for Catalina. But it’s obviously not great. Since I’m on a tight budget and no new iMacs anyway, I was thinking of getting a Mac mini and using the iMac as a monitor for now.. possible?! HDMI or thunderbolt to old DisplayPort?!

I think I’ll get 8gb (still more ram than other macs I’ve edited video on) and 512 hard drive as I use iCloud a lot and keep video files on an external drive.

Will my skinflint solution to get a new better Mac work?!

Am super envious of those of you just a few days away from M1 ownership.

As much as I fancy ordering the MPB, I'd really only be doing it for the sake of doing it. Gonna carry on with my 2015 MBA and SB2 combo for now ... but if today's benchmarks are anything like reality then I may end up getting myself a little Christmas present.

I'm sure there'll be plenty of reviews and real world benchmarks next week! I was excited already (mainly because I hate the 2020 Air) but the benchmarks from this morning are very very interesting.

Hmm, so Algoriddim have just announced support for the Apple Silicon chips.
I‘m liking the sound of the added capabilities provided by the new neural engine. As a DJ myself this definitely sounds like an amazing addition, being able to separate audio tracks on the fly. Though there isn’t much work at the moment for club DJ’s due to COVID I’m hoping to get my hands on the software to play with before going back next year ?

I'd be interested to hear from anyone considering upgrading who is still on a 2015 rMBP, the Pro Max has hammered my bank account but I'm still tempted by the new Air..?
Thats exactly where I’m coming from, an early 2015 MBP. I’ve ordered a 16GB / 512 GB M1 MBP configuration

Ordered the MBA 256 16 but also the 512 16, can’t decide which one to get. The MBA is just my small coding and streaming machine.

Its a real shame the 16GB option is still BTO, I really thought that would have been a stock item by now with Apple and other resellers.

Macbook Air BTO and due between 23rd-25th November. Looking forward to see how it works. My current Macbook Air 2018 is quite under powered, often apps take a while to open or freeze. Also, when video conferencing, the fan noise is noticeable and the battery gets hit massively. I therefore, use my IPP now as my main machine. I do some light video editing using LumaFusion which is coming to the M1 Macbook so may open up 3rd part plug in opportunities not available in IOS. Just things like instant wake and better app responsiveness and the ability to work more seamless with my Ipad Pro will be great. Be interesting to see comparisons between these M1 devices and the A14/A12Z devises and how they perform.

Currently running an iMP, some 13" 2018 MBPs, 2 x 2012 i5 minis (slowly being retired from service) and a single 2012 i7 mini as the always-on server.

Went with a base Mac mini M1 to replace the i7 Mac mini in the network rack. There is plenty storage in the rack and a TB3 to 10 GbE adapter going spare too.

Compared to the old i7 the M1 should be quite a beast and at a little over £650 it is a very pleasing price.

Hoping that I can offload some overnight media transcoding to it as well as the usual home network / content cache / UniFi Controller / Plex server et al.

The M1 will be run as a headless unit when in the rack but I will probably play with it on a 4K screen for a bit, just to see what it is capable of.

Should be delivered on either 19 or 20 Nov. No idea why it slipped back a day from original ordering.
