What does a spotter do? Is it someone who stands outside and spots no matter what the weather is like? If so, how much do these people hate themselves?
Different types of spotters. Ground truth is the main purpose. To give accuracy to what is showing on radar. Wind damage or hail reports give NWS the tools to issue warnings. Then you have storm spotters that will report active tornadoes. In winter giving accurate snowfall reports. Rain totals are also given.

Oh, I see. And, thanks, for the explanation, @LizKat.

I read a new geospatial satellite is going up this weekend for the western US that should improve weather reports. I'd say they're more accurate today than they were about 20 years ago when the big local stations (that were part of big national networks) started reporting radar'd weather and were always terribly off.

GOES-16 or GOES-R was launched in November 2016 and is now operational as GOES-East. GOES-17 or GOES-S was just launched and will become GOES-West next year.

Can't catch a break: eastern half of NYS and PA plus states east to the Atlantic have new winter storm watch late Tuesday into Wednesday night, and into Thursday for some areas. Some areas can expect 10-18" of new snow by the time the thing wraps if it materializes as now forecast.

What a start to the month that's supposed to cut Spring loose.

from forecast discussion:

Best confidence for heavy snowfall is across the higher terrain of western New England and the Taconics, as well as portions of the eastern Catskills and Helderbergs. Highest uncertainty with reaching warning level snowfall is across the southern Adirondacks/western Mohawk Valley/Lake George Saratoga region

in the map below:

The blue is the storm watch.
Pink and purple offshore are gale and storm warnings.
Light green is coastal flood advisory.

:D yeah we'll see about that. The week is young. Bar that door up while you can... Meanwhile I got 8' glaciers in my driveways so I hope we don't get any heavy hits out of this one. So far they say max 7" around here.

Haha... It was tough I tell yeah! We also saw some snow in the mountains, about a two hour drive from where I am, but it has been pretty darn cold by Southern Cal standards! :p:)

Those folks who are dealing with the snow and sub zero temperatures, that is no joke!

Right now I'm competing for a job in Fairbanks, speaking as a Floridian you get used to the cold pretty quickly.

Digging out from yet another Nor'easter, this one was mostly snow unlike the prior one which had devestating winds and floods.

I forgot that you got smacked too
The funny thing is, that yesterday afternoon, and evening, the temps were close to 40. The wind was whipping and the rain was really coming down. I guess a cold front came in as well and the temps dropped enough to make snow - the wet heavy kind of snow. Shoveling was tough

Other areas get more snow (Buffalo anyone???), but I really hated the winters in Boston for how bitterly cold that wind is that comes off of the water. People don't appreciate how damn cold it is along the coast of the north-east in winter. That chilling, damp cold!!!

I don't mind it, perhaps because I've lived here all my life. I love the look of the snow as this picture that my wife snapped this morning.

Looks beautiful, @maflynn. I sometimes miss having snow like I did when I was younger. Despite the cliche and humorous saying, I did walk to and from school in the snow as a kid during the winter. Everyone did in those days. Not too hard unless it was coming down hard. After living out here for a few decades, I really love the dry and warm/hot weather. Sometimes it's too much. I like the mild winters we have here and the spare rainy days we get. I can't imagine living in a cold climate like the North East. All the power to those who love it there.

Anyway, it's pouring down hard outside.
