Chaos here in Scotland from the 'Beast from the East' (a cold weather system blowing in from the East across the North Sea, which is unusual). Alas, no thunder-snow ... yet. Apparently we're colder than the North Pole ATM.

I love Scotland but bring on Spring!
I'm not far outside the SW red weather warning zone, so far so over-exaggerated...

Well Spring may not have hit Scotland yet but one over here is a faux version.

I should have settled for the 4 to 18 inch snowfall forecast and a storm "watch". Now it's a storm warning instead, with forecast of 10 to 20 inches Thursday night late through all of Friday. I'd like to think it's hype but they're better than that at storm forecasts now. Only thing can save us is the main snowband setting up somewhere else for the park-and-dump part, but the bottom of that range is impressive enough. Ten inches before drifting is a lot of snow.

I'm charging up even my older iPad (the "recipe server" in the kitchen) so I can watch some of my previously purchased iTunes TV series and movies if the power goes out. Apples and pretzels instead of popcorn...

We've been enjoying the same faux spring here. Was hoping it'd last til April. :)

Think they're calling for 8" of snow tonight here. Just hope I'm back from Toronto before it starts....you would think people could drive in winter when we get it every year.... :(

Not where I am (east coast of Scotland). We're even getting blowing snow, which is very unusual because we're right on the coast and the North Sea tends to keep temperature above freezing. During the snow squalls earlier today conditions were close to blizzard (and those ice pellets sting when they're driven by 30+ mph gusts).

Doesn't seem right to me. Snow days are about hot chocolate and decent popcorn. And whiskey....

They downgraded our part of South Wales to an Amber weather warning yet since they did this the weather has got worse and I only just made it home before the roads were closed. The Valleys is taking a battering.

Or one of my personal favorites hot chocolate with baileys irish cream. Oh and of course a marshmallow or two!

Ugh... hope everyone was hunkered down and not trying to travel. Sounds like a preview of coming events for this side of the pond. High winds are to be part of the picture.

You've got logic and good taste on your side... but if I lose electrical power and since I don't cook with gas, the prospects of making hot chocolate or popcorn on the deck with a camp stove lack a certain je ne sais quoi... My whiskey ticket was (joyously enough) punched out to the last good drop a long time ago,. so I''d be settling for something like iced mocha java with the coffee part prepared in advance. I'm hoping that at least the "scattered power outages" will end up as a part of the forecast that failed to materialize.

Holy crap. Sending good thoughts your way. We’re getting a lot of precip too, but it’s rain. And nowhere near the amount you’re talking about...just a loooong, dreary soak. Let’s hope this is one of those times your forecast is wrong.

Last night was warmer than it has been in the last few weeks. It was still "cold" for nighttime, but not bone-chilling. We're expecting rain the next two days. A flood warning has been issues to some regions of the state, particularly those that were savaged by fire months ago. We're also expecting, in our area, nighttime temperatures in the low to mid 30s in addition to rain. Wonderful...

I've had a strong craving for marshmallows all week long. Whether it's homemade or not. Or whip up some meringues and eat the confection without cooking, illness be damned. This is something I do on occasion. I've never gotten sick.

Here I figure if this storm materializes as promised, at least we'll find out if it's true that when March comes in like a lion, it goes out like a lamb. I could really dig putting up with 20" of snow for a few days if that's the end of it for the season. I have my doubts though. We do get snow in April. We had a nor'easter the middle of March last year, so this time we're either getting the late-blooming storm handed out early or we're going for two. My plow guy paid off his truck behind last year's late snowfalls, I think. What's left now, a condo in Hilton Head?

Meanwhile they've tinkered with the forecast again and it's now down to "only" sixteen inches. But they extended the warning period from tonight at 11pm to Saturday morning at 1am. Gonna be so ugly by the morning commute that all the schools in two counties here have already announced they're cancelling classes. Right around here they'll probably say they're closing the roads at some point so they can ration the plowing efforts.

A friend in Long Island out along the south shore says they're supposed to have 60mph winds off this thing, along with three inches of rain and a little snow followed by coastal flooding. I'll settle for the northern forecast!

Hilton Head's a fun place. Probably a good time to whip up some bread and soups/stews, Liz. May I recommend a savory olive cake?

I cooked some rice, some pasta and made some sauteed veggies I can stuff into pitas. I have cooked beans for the rice and marinara sauce for the pasta so.. that should do it. Let it snow! (it is snowing, actually, but it doesn't look like it's sticking yet, it was still 35 degrees out there awhile ago).

Olive cake sounds good though, how about this one..

but seriously, a Meyer lemon? this is the Catskills. Recipe writer went all Martha Stewart on me. I think I have all the other ingredients but it's 11pm so... I'm going to bed. Olive cake adventure tomorrow if we still have power.

I've only made it twice. The last time being in late 2010. I don't remember if the recipe I followed wanted meyer lemon, but in any case I can't see the harm in using any other citrus zest. Any lemon, lime or orange variety should suffice. I usually zest and freeze said zest for future use. For dried thyme and rosemary, hydrate them in a little bit of water and add it to the mixture.

The honey's there to balance everything out. It is a bit oily, but more a dense/succulent loaf. I liked it but it's not something I'd make often. Pretty sure we had it with beef stew.

Ok we are getting the second day of significant snowfall here, but at least it's warmed up to -2 Celsius. The last couple of posts are making me hungry though. I have a craving for olive cake for some reason...

It's very good. Though I recommend using a flat baking dish. Chop and let the olives air dry a bit. The reduced moisture intensifies the flavor and less moisture leads to slower spoiling time. It's not a very crumby "cake" and it's more dense than you would think. I don't make it anymore because it wasn't what I was expecting. While the flavor is nice, it wasn't for us. I did move onto olive sourdough bread, which is nicer, in my honest opinion.

Careful not to get impaled by a fallen icicle.

And here comes the rain! Outstanding! So we have pretty cold temperatures, at least for us, and now you thrown rain into the mix. Southern California drivers can't drive normally and you add rain, the freeways are going to be a fun ride today.

We've been in blizzard conditions and my snow-hat would be off to the power crews for resolving a five-hour power outage except I'm keeping that hat on for good luck LOL.

Anyway the power came back on a bit ago. Nice to be drinking hot coffee with hot milk and typing into a laptop connected to the internet. Hat tip to the power crews and net service providers! This is one for the record books around here, probably. More moisture has been sucked into the system from the east than was expected and most of it's apparently been gifted to us in the Catskills, aka "the park and dump zone"... even as the blizzard level winds diminish, the snowfall remains at an inch or two per hour. C'mon down for the extended ski season whenever they finally find the roads again :D

:D We could FedEx you some extra snow from here by Monday maybe.. Looks like my county is ground zero for the park-n-dump snow bands on this one... reports coming in look like the forecast didn't hype it and we're not even done yet. Winds picking up now so the drifting is an issue. Weird how this storm settled in farther south than usual. East of here over in Hobart NOAA suggests the snow could top 30". They're welcome to it.

What does a spotter do? Is it someone who stands outside and spots no matter what the weather is like? If so, how much do these people hate themselves?

Well I no longer routinely use my woodstove although there's enough dry wood for an emergency.. and there's always the piano and a maul to cut it down to size... but as far as food goes I do keep a deep pantry and so don't have to shop in winter except to top off perishables. I'm on a county road and they do get plowed first, so even though the roads are officially closed, the guy who does my driveways swung by today earlier for a first pass, probably so he can be assured of being able to get in here for the next time later on.

What does a spotter do? Is it someone who stands outside and spots no matter what the weather is like? If so, how much do these people hate themselves?

They get training from the national weather service... there are hundreds of thousands of them. NWS also provides equipment and instructions to do the measuring and emails them when they are soliciting precip info. A lot of them are farmers and/or members of volunteer FD/EMS plus county highway superintendents or crew members. Basically people with a vested interest in impact of weather on local area anyway.

Excerpt:
In sparsely populated rural areas, local NWS officers ask spotters to record temperatures and provide rain and snowfall totals. To measure rainfall, spotters use NWS-supplied rain gauges—glass or metal buckets with a funnel and a built-in ruler. To measure snowfall, the NWS recommends placing two flat boards painted white (preferable since white doesn't absorb sunlight and therefore keeps melting to a minimum) side by side in a backyard. The spotter lets snow pile up on one board through the course of a storm and measures its total height at the end. Snow on the other board is measured and wiped clean at regular intervals to determine changing precipitation rates throughout the storm.
