I ordered my first eSIM over the phone, it was delivered with my phone number on the sticker, but had not been activated so my physical sim worked up until I swapped it on the website. I read on another post that the QR code could be rescanned on the same device to add it back onto the phone. I wanted to test this and just so every one knows, the QR code can only be used once. I had removed the plan, and immediately tried to scan it back on but it would not allow this. I had to go into my EE store, who didn't know what they were doing, but found the "How To" guide that I'm guessing EE HQ had sent them. He activated it for me then and there and I was back up and running.

Factual info right here;

eSim is the same as a regular sim, but without the physical sim involved. You can call EE customer service, request a replacement eSIM and they'll send it in the post. Only took a day to arrive for me. The pack already had my phone number printed on the inside, and I just had to scan the code on my phone to add a blank number to the settings (it showed 00000000000), then go to ee.co.uk/simswap to complete the process. activated within 5 minutes.

Thanks. This was my exact understanding and exactly what I said to the store staff and they were having none of it.

Store tells me that there are replacement esims and new line esims. The new ones can’t be used for a sim swap and don’t have stock of replacement ones.

I call ********

Where does it say that? Mine doesn’t and I did do a sim swap!

All it is is a QR code. why would there need to be 2 types of sim - There aren’t for regular sims. A sim is a sim is a sim,

Odd. Mine looks like this. Was given in-store unopened. Did the install at home and happily swapped my current EE number onto the eSim using the website.

Mine was sent through post

I think for all the hassle best to speak to technical support on 150 and get it delivered next day.

Not sure why you’d need 2 different esims. All it is is a QR code! You could just go to their website and get a one-time QR code displayed there and save all the paper!

The whole purpose of “E” sim is it’s electronic!

After drawing a blank in my store yesterday, I did a web chat this morning. Agent seemed to know what to do and offered for me to get an eSIM in store, or have one sent out for £1.50. I said store had no clue and I'm not paying £1.50 after wasting time in a store because they didn't have a clue. "replacement" eSIM is in the post.

Anyone know what would happen if you have to swap your phone out with Apple under warranty? Not like you can move the eSIM between devices like a normal SIM.

E is embedded. Not electronic. But yes they should distribute potentially differently. The problem probably is email can be hacked and anyone could then scan that code especially if your sim has already been swapped to it.

Just posted this discussion on the EE community. They reposnded with...

“Thank you for taking the time to post on the Community today.

There is only one type of eSIM for the iPhone and the packaging will depend on when you've joined EE.

The packaging that states "A big welcome from EE" is for suppose to be for new customers who sign up in store and the packaging that states "Your replacement eSIM" is for existing customers. It doesn't matter which you are given as there is no difference.”

Because the postal system is totally secure. My sim (code) arrived on Saturday and the envelope was open, so not very secure.
You should be able to log in online and obtain your QR code, obviously several different methods could be used to ensure security, depending on the circumstances of why you need the code. I find it ridiculous that if I need to exchange my phone that I need to wait two days for EE to send me a QR code when I should be able to access it instantly.
Hopefully as this becomes more common companies will roll out a more secure and easy way to access the code you need.

Not sure why it needs to be secure at all. There is nothing you can do with the QR code until it’s activated and it can only be activated once. If you found one in the street and it’s been activated it’s of no use and if you find it and it hasn’t been activated all you can do it activate it to your account. They are free anyway so it’s not as if by finding one you’ve found £500 or a pile of somebody’s personal data. You haven’t.

Agreed, it’s why I’m back on a physical sim today, I’ll give the eSim another go in a couple of months or when they get the system more streamlined and robust.

You are planning to exchange or buy a new phone in a few months time? Otherwise what's the point? 6 months time, the system could be more robust.

Only revert back to physical if everything remains the same 6 months later.

For those who go to an EE Store and have a new SIM card pack. I called EE using whilst there using landline and someone on the phone did the swap and I was up and running. The Store said they can't give me the pack as its for new connections.

What happens if my iPhone Is replaced in Apple Store or I want to transfer to another iPhone? I no longer have the QR Code? Would be so cool if its linked to our iCloud accounts! Soon I hope!

Thanks

This is from EE themselves...

Finally got my esim and it appears to be working, expect that my number under setting's phone is showing as - 00 000000000 which is an issue for iMessage and FaceTime.

Anyone have any suggestions?

How long ago did you activate it? It takes time for that to correct itself. Maybe an hour or so. Have you rebooted your phone? That helps.

It's been about an hour, and I have rebooted. I guess I will wait a bit longer!

Tried that but doesn't allow me too, even with FaceTime and iMessage switched off!

Switching off iMessage and FaceTime, removing the physical sim and de and reactivating the data did the trick. Now my iMessage is stuck on activation but all else is good...
