Here’s the problem. I was in Turkey last night with work so I was using the work sim to make calls. SMS/data is expensive in Turkey and it is not included in most price plans.

I wanted to text a few people and I couldn’t. No matter what I did they received SMS’s from my personal account and I will be changed for that not my work.

How do you do that when you already have a conversation going with the person? You CANNOT click the new button because it opens the conversation and then you don’t have the opportunity select which line to use.

You can force which sim by clicking on the persons name in the conversation window and then clicking through info and choosing the sim to always use.

In case anyone was wondering, I didn’t realise they had already done the sim swap in store, which is why I was getting error messages when on the sim swap page.

I just had to switch over to secondary/turn on mobile data for it, can’t believe I didn’t realise haha

got mine delivered today and activated. Just remember to complete the setup on swapsim & remember the esim number is the number above the small barcode on the esim pack.

Thanks but I don’t ALWAYS want to use. I just wanted to send a SMS from the work some there and then.

Seems this whole thing is a little bit not thought out.

Developed in the America where the majority never leave the country. Thus no need to be swapping from sim to sim.

It’s easy enough to change the setting if you need to. I would think 30 seconds to save you those roaming charges should be worth it ;)

But yes, Apple could make it more user friendly.

Even your method doesn’t really work. Try it!

Would be easier just to force touch on the send icon to be able to change to line 2 for that message.

Currently it’s just too fiddly for those of us that travel all the time and are in real need of a dual sim phone.

Another great apple idea given 70% thought at the design stage.

I had a right to-do trying to get my eSIM from an EE store last night.

Staff initially were clueless and because the store started getting busy they just fobbed me off saying it couldn't be done so I left and had a look around the store next door (GAME). While I was in there, I read a bit more about the process from those who were successful on Twitter and the EE forums, and because i'm a pretty stubborn **** I went back in to EE and was upfront in saying that I wasn't going to let it drop.

I explained to them what I had found out, they made a few enquiries with some colleagues (who also didn't seem to know what they were doing) and they ultimately gave me an eSIM - but they wanted me to try and sort it while I was in the store. Got it all sorted in the end - and i'm now happily using EE on eSIM and O2 on physical SIM, but what a waste of an hour and a half.

EE have really dropped the ball on this one. They were far too secretive over the whole process (between the XS being released and eSIM being available) - customer services and stores should have been notified about this and trained weeks ago. They could even have gone as far as allowing their customers to 'beta test' like those in EU and USA have been able to do.

Even your method doesn’t really work. Try it!

It needs one extra step to make it work, before you send the first text to the number you need to turn the eSim off and it then pops up asking if you want to use secondary, after that it will remain sending from secondary, even with the eSim turned on.

Would be easier just to force touch on the send icon to be able to change to line 2 for that message.

I’d agree, but if you want to use it, it unfortunately needs workarounds to use as it is now.

Never thought of turning the esim part off. I’ll try that next time.

It’s completely unintuitive and clumsy, I stumbled on that by accident while messing about trying to figure it out.

It definitely works, and carries on working when the eSim is active again, no logic involved but it works. Not very Apple like ;)

Nope. Just tried that and it doesn’t work!

I’m on imassage with a mate (EE).

Just turned off that line (esim) and sent a reply to my friend an it still sends and an iMessage (ie from the line I’ve just turned off). It didn’t send as an SMS from the other line.

Looks like you have to turn off iMessage AND eSIM. How can Apple oversee this?

How hard can it be to go to messages and select an account to send from.

I bet the developers in Apple have never left the state let alone the country so issues like this are totally unknown to them.

I only tested for green messages, whilst still a bug that needs fixing at least sending as an iMessage doesn’t cost you anything.

Not quite right....

I was in Turkey where data is not free so no iMessage. So on my personal line I have no data. I wanted to send a text from my work line (company pays). I sent the SMS and it came from my personal account so I ended up paying not work.

Picked up my Esim this morning. Working great. And much more granular control over which line does what with iOS 12.1.1

How did you get it. Did the store just give it to you. I’m interested in just getting a PAYG and trying to blag a esim from store.
I think it’s only for existing pay monthly customers. They didn’t just give it to me, they cancelled my existing physical sim and moved my number to the new eSim

Ah ok. Some stores are just giving blank cards out and letting you use sim swap yourself. If that happens you can swap a PAYG.

What about SMS? Other where reporting issues with sending a green message

Looks to be stalling. So I’d wait until they fix that.

However, found this...

My experience is that the issue only seems to occur on existing message threads. And it seems to sort itself out if you get that contact to send you a text message. Deleting the message thread and starting a new one also seems to fix the issue in my experience but obviously this may not be desirable for some messages.

I can confirm my NEW green message went through.

Someone also tried this...

I took out the phyiscal SIM, sms sent ok on the esim then put the physical back in. I've sent test messages between the two numbers on my handset and its sending and receiving ok.

This whole SMS sending thing is a mess. If you have a current iMessage conversation with somebody you can’t then send them an SMS from your other line. You may need to do this if you are abroad and have no data and want your company to pay for SMS’s when sent from the company line. Deleting your existing conversations just so you can start a new one is not acceptable.

I‘ve just been into my local Apple store and even they had no idea how you can do it.
