Always great to see this thread back again for another year!

I switched to the dark side in 2019! Firstly trying out a Huawei P30 Pro which was superb. Then the whole Huawei issue blew up so I got out early doors!

Went back to the XS Max for some time but, being a long term Sony fan, I managed to buy the Sony Xperia 1 for an absolute steal when launched. Really enjoying it with the 4K screen, performance, media watching, photos, battery life etc. Video quality is not quite in the same league as Apple but I can live with that for over half the cost of an iPhone XS Max. I was worried about using Android but its been great plus easy peasy to switch. My cloud usage is increasing!

I will be taking a breather from the Apple band wagon this year. Still using everything else Apple but been so happy with the Xperia 1 to justify not buying the iPhone 11 Pro Max.

Of course, I shall be watching the Apple keynote with interest as usual but so far I've been underwhelmed with what I have seen from the iPhone leaks for 2019.

Apple are clearly saving themselves for something special in 2020 but this year I'm really not sure they've done enough to make current X & XS/Max owners all upgrade as usual. Especially amongst strong competitors. Let's see what happens!

Any XR owners, thinking of upgrading to the XS instead of the 11? The XS Max when I compared to my XR didn't seem that much physically bigger, but the screen is much bigger.

Just thinking wether to, the XS pricing to me has gone a bit too far, even on the IUP I'm on. So thinking if the 11 isn't too much an upgrade, Apple do the normal and drop prices on last years models (although I know the X disappeared last year), and look at the XS Max (I'd wouldn't go XS as screen smaller, and think the XR screen is good enough).

Don't think I'm too bothered on the extra camera upgrade and faster again, if that's all the 11 brings, but lets see.

Just wonder if anyone thinking of this, or even in the past does similar?

Totally agree with this.

I've heard a story of setting prices.

A guy walks out of his office in the city one day to see a new hot dog stand set up right outside. He walks up asks for a hot dog, gets told it's £1, pays the money gets his hot dog and goes back to work.

Next day he goes to the same hot dog stand, asks for a hot dog, gets told it's £1.50, pays the money gets his hot dog and goes back to work.

The third day he goes to the same hot dog stand, asks for a hot dog, gets told it's £2. He asks the hot dog seller "how much is a hot dog? You've been putting the prices up each day". The hot dog seller says "I've no idea. I'll know once people stop paying".

I wonder if Apple are employing the same theory?

Hahah very True, given Sammy’s bendy phone will be out soon enough that £2k barrier has already been reached.

At least when apple will do a foldable phone it will cost as much as a car.. given how they like to ‘innovate’ that will be many years away!

....I'm banking on Apple vastly reducing the costs of the current XR range - my son wanted to get one last week but I persuaded him to wait until after tomorrow's announcements!

This morning’s trade-in quotes for my immaculate unlocked iPhone XS Max 256GB:

Music Magpie £574
Envirofone £640

Edit (after correction by johnyslats): MM figure should be £685.10

I think the Music Magpie figure is incorrect. That looks to be the 'unknown' rather than unlocked price. Should be 685.10
That's dropped a little. At 7am this morning when I checked it was £690. I guess if you want to sell one it'll be best to sell it now rather than wait, the price will only likely go down.

It's iPhone announcement eve!
For some reason I'm quite excited..!

My Dad had a terrible experience with Music Magpie. He sent in a perfect condition iphone 7 that had been in a screen protector and case since day one. Music magpie revised his original offer saying ‘not as described’, he rejected this and requested the phone back. When the phone came back it had a huge deep scratch through the screen. When he contacted them, they basically said “tough luck, you should have taken photos of the phone before you sent it.” The scratch was so deep, it looks like it was deliberate. Looking at some trust pilot reviews, it looks like this has happened to other people on more than a few occasions. Beware people.

I just sent a series 3 Apple Watch to Music magpie. The original quote was £140. Just got an email saying it is not as described and offering me £84, I rejected the offer, there was not a mark on it. Will not bother with them again. I have uploaded some photos, judge for yourselves.
Wow... that's shocking! Can I ask, did you include the charger?

For those that are wary of the online buy-in companies, there's always CEX and GAME on the high street.

Their prices are lower than the online organisations, but at least you know instantly what you're actually going to get based on the actual condition of your device if your device is anything but 100% mint.

I've not tried to trade with GAME for maybe 3 years, but the last time I did they offered to beat CEX's best price. I already had membership with CEX, but GAME wanted two forms of ID for the sale and there was only £10 ultimately in it. GAME and CEX will also want any packaging, chargers and cables that came with the device.

Luckily I was going to sell mine on eBay so I do have photos of it before I sent it, and it is still covered by AppleCare +, so if the worst comes to the worst I can get it sorted.

...I thought they normally add the new models and then shift the prices down one notch for all previous models?
Not always, the discontinued the X for example when the XS/XR came out. Same with the 5 for 5C and 5S.

I've made a list of current on contract prices direct from EE, vodaphone and three for the xs max and xr. Both mine and my wife's contracts are up for renewal and whatever replaces these models will be what we are looking at. The question will be, how much are the networks going to bump up the prices for early adopters.

Unknown at this point. However worth considering upgrading via CPW or similar as the tariff's are usually cheaper than direct (if you haven't already looked at this)

I am pretty certain that the XS and XS Max will be completely discontinued. There seems no point in having those in the range together with the 11 (new XR) which will offer the same dual camera system.

Most likely scenario is that the XR will remain in range at a lower price (£100 - £150 lower) but in a reduced colour set, and possibly only 2 storage options (64 and 256 would be my bet).

Similarly the 7/7 Plus will be discontinued and the 8/8Plus given a price drop (I suspect £100 reduction).

This approach would mean the following devices remain in range with clear function distinction....

11 Pro (2 sizes) - OLED Face ID, triple camera
11 - LCD Face ID, dual camera
XR - LCD Face ID, single camera
8/8Plus - LCD Touch ID, single/dual camera (on Plus)
