I found it easier to pre order online with a credit card then swap to IUP in store after launch

But wouldn't that take out the money? And then you have to go through the hassle of a refund?

Surely upgrading through the IUP can't be that bad?

Well, I've joined this thread to quash the doubters....!!!!! :p

Still have my XS and if the rumours are to be believed, personally, I think this year's multiple camera lense iPhones looks FUGGLY which is the main reason I won't be upgrading this year!

I'm also exactly halfway to actually owning my XS (monthly payments end this time next year) and will be keeping it in order to pass down to the wife next year! :D.

Next year's iPhones, especially if the 5G rumors are also true, look to be very special indeed.......!

I'll be watching from the sidelines.....
:apple:;)

yes it does involve paying for it then Apple refunding
think loads did that option last yh thou

I went on the IUP last year (in the UK)

Im aware you can upgrade after 11 months of payment - is there usually an option to pre-order the new iPhones on pre order day through the IUP?

On preorder day, you can go to your IUP account, and upgrade/pre-order through there. Pretty sure last year there was plenty of stock to go round in the hour/s after the launch.

now depending on if you want to trouble.. a few of us went down a slightly different route!

I took out the XS on a new IUP plan rather than an upgrade, sold my phone privately (well through music magic and the like) and then pay off your IUP loan with Barclays directly.

Quick calculation based on todays figures (after my 11th payment, my remaining loan with apple would be £576 (XS 256gb). At today's prices I would get £665 from music magpie for my phone, so in theory leaving me ~£100 better off than just handing my XS back as a part of the upgrade process.

you also get the outstanding unused apple care back too so that would be another £90 or so. I'll be doing this again!

I currently have the XS that i bought outright last year, i want the newest iphone every year so thinking of going the iUP route just a few queries

1. Wanting to get whatever the new XS Max is, was it easy enough to get the XS Max last year on iUP?
2. When i come to upgrade next year can/how would i do this? Would i have to buy outright then get a refund etc.
3. 2020 iPhone is what i am really wanting but want to get in the iUP is this a good idea?

Thanks

it was easy enough
pretty sure you can only take a IUP out if your chosen store have stock available.
reason I ordered outright on a credit card then went in store. they refunded the card and did the IUP on the same phone. doesn’t even have to stay sealed in the box.

next year you have 2 options hand it back to Apple get nothing back after 11 payments and upgrade
otherwise start again next year on another IUP sell current handset pay off Barclays pocket the difference

I'll be in the UK during this launch (Sept. 23 I believe?)

What are my chances for a walk-in? Will Apple accept a US XR trade-in?

1. the process is easy enough to do in store but there were a few people who reported not being approved. If you're credit history and score is healthy you should be fine, but there were a good few who were not. if you do not get accepted to IUP then you still have the option to buy the phone outright there and then.

2. you can just do what apple want and after your 11th payment, upgrade again. in essence you hand your phone back and that IUP/Loan is settled. you are then taking on a new IUP all over again, the £69 deposit again etc. if your credit takes a hit in that time between upgrades, your ability to be accepted could again be affected.

You also have the option I described just above your post where you pay off the loan yourself and you might make a little bit out of it.

3. IUP works for me as I'm an annual upgrader, I'd have bought Apple Care regardless and I didn't want to fork out a grand when Apple are giving me 0% finance.

current speculation seems to say the key note will be the 10th, which means pre-orders on the 13th and launch on the 20th.

I can't see there being any issues with stock.. I changed my mind between an Xs and max and then had a phone with damage out the box and each time I was able to get walk in stock and change it.

Doesn't look like it (from Apple's UK trade-in website):

I always buy my phones outright but wish to keep my current phone until release day. So if I did decide to upgrade this year then if I preorder and then take my XS Max in to the Apple store, am i right in saying that they will give me a gift card to the value of my current phone, credit my account for the value of the new phone that I preordered and then off set the gift card against the repurchase of the new phone?

Yup. Trade in value of old phone goes on gift card then you use that + what ever method you want to pay the remaining of the cost of the new phone.

One thing to bear in mind is that you can generally get a better trade in price from music magpie and the rest then you will from apple.

For example apple will give £445 for a good X 256 and magpie gives £470

I love everyone in this thread saying things like “going to skip this year” and “keeping hold of my XS”. Lol!

After the keynote, we’ll all be back here like “so, what colour you going for?” Haha.
Hahaha after the keynote they get exciting after three days they say this is going back for a refund.

how's everyone doing for capacity this year? went with the 256GB last year thinking 64 wouldn't be enough... looking at my phone now I'm using 54gb, out of that 5.5gb on apps I've hardly used this year and about 6gb on WhatsApp chat!

could conieivingly go back to 64gb o_O

I have the 256GB model and still have about 183GB left...

I’m using about 72GB so 64GB isn’t enough...128GB properly would be but we know apple won’t do a 128GB model and with amount of photos I will take and videos going forward 256GB might well be the sweet spot as 4K will take up a lot of room

Anybody here get the 512GB? Think it was worth it or will you downsize on your next phone?

Hello, hello, hello!

Good to see some familiar names as we do this dance once again!

For the moment, I'm also sitting this year out as my silver Xs Max 256GB is still serving me well, especially as an evening of polishing with Cape Cod cloth has restored it to as new condition. I took it out on the iPhone Payments plan, so I'm now on the 10th out of 20 payments. I also really want 5G, which should be more widely available by this time next year and the timescale rumours turn out to be true.

To answer somebody's question above, Apple won't turn you away from a store so long as you have a legitimate reservation for a handset, regardless of whether you want to join the Upgrade Programme/iPhone Payments Plan for the first time, upgrade for the first time, or pay cash outright for the handset in its entirety.

So, if you're on the iPhone Upgrade Programme and you accidentally reserve an iPhone from the regular pool of stock, the store will do what they call "changing lanes" where they will either reallocate correct stock with you, or make your reserved handset fit the Upgrade Programme scenario. Last year, I made the mistake of reserving a handset from general stock when I should have reserved from the pool of stock for Upgrade Programme/iPhone Payments - they took care of it without fuss.

I'm hoping they keep the Xs Max around for another year as I'd like a new official leather case colour, unlike what they did with the iPhone X where they took all the official cases away and the iPhone Xs cases didn't fit the X... Also in the market for some new Apple Watch strap colours to keep the upgrade bug at bay!
