If it is anything like last year, I seem to remember that you could still preorder for delivery on launch day quite a while after 8am. Of course there might be more demand this year. The great thing about this is that, last year, I think the scalpers got a hiding.

Some models were still available after 10am. And I seem to remember some that initially got later delivery dates had them brought forward.

It was the same story for in-store stock. They took a while to run out on launch morning and new stock was regularly refreshing throughout the week. From what I saw, nobody with access to a store should have struggled to get launch day stock last year.

Is anyone upgrading through through the IUP?

Will upgrading to the new iPhone 11 be an option at 8.01am aswell?

Yes. If you go into the Apple Store app, tap your name/picture, there’s an option to review your iPhone Upgrade details. It should tell you’re eligible. At the moment it says go to store to upgrade, but from 8:01 you’ll be able to select a model to reserve for instore upgrade.

Good to see this thread gaining it's usual annual momentum!!

I am an infrequent poster - but have had every iPhone ever on launch day and plenty of experience/knowledge as to how this plays out!!!

Still lots of the usual questions..... so here is a summary that might be helpful.....

Phones will be almost identical in appearance/size to last year (XS/XS Max/XR) - other than change to colours/finish. Key differences have been highlighted in other posts but the main ones that offer true functional improvements:
  • Improved cameras
  • Improved processor/RAM
  • Bi-directional Qi charging
  • Improved shatter resistance
There will be no 5G, no change to notch, no change to screen size. There will be no surprises here at all.

Any 'surprises' will be around software functionality that will be added to iOS13 and available exclusively on the new devices (e.g. using new cameras, improved processor power etc.).

Phones will be unveiled on Sept 10th, pre-orders 8am Sept 13th, delivery Sept 20th. There can be no question as to these dates - as they follow the pattern that has been established for years.

Usually the best way to order is via the Apple Store app, or direct via carrier.

I imagine prices will be identical to those of the current handsets. The only change to this will be if Apple tries to adjust for exchange (which could see a moderate increase), or if they change storage capacities. (e.g. if base model increased to 128GB then would expect price to increase).

Purchasing option will remain the same (Apple upgrade program etc.) and I expect Apple to do a marketing push on trade ins of old handsets.

Stock wise I fully expect it to be plentiful of all models. Other than camera, there are no major changes, and have been no stories of component parts shortages. Apple, carriers, and all major retail outlets will get stock. If anything demand for the 11 (XR replacement) might be highest due to those who bought an 8 in 2017 now coming in to their upgrade cycle (with the 11 being most economical model to update to).

Hey all,

Great to see this thread again.

I’m currently on the iPhone Upgrade Programme and eligible to upgrade to the new iPhone once it’s released.

My question is, what is my best option now? I realise I can sell the phone to a third party which will give me more than what Apple will, giving me a little extra £ on the side. Is this the best way forward, or is there a better way to upgrade every year?

You are spot on. Best approach is to sign up to one or more of the device buying companies (e.g. Music Magpie, envirofone, Mazuma) in advance of the new release. Have to balance getting maximum value (as prices will drop) whilst having enough time to send the device to them (most allow 14 days, but be careful with MM as have to use three delivery service which can take longer). If you can't be without a device then earliest I would 'sign up' is September 10th before the announcement - which then allows for you to take delivery of new phone on Sept 20th, and post phone out same day.

I would also check out Apple's own trade in values, which recently have been enhanced when purchasing a new device (I expect XS values to be published next week). Either way you will likely come out better off than using the IUP.

Depends on whether you want AppleCare.

The upgrade plan is just interest free finance for the cost of the phone plus AC. If you want to do it cheaper and are willing to take the risk, go without the AC.

The most cost effective way is to sell your device privately when you’re ready to upgrade because you pocket the equity after you use the proceeds the pay off your plan.

Or, accept the loss of the equity in exchange for the convenience of handing the device back to Apple and starting a new agreement on your next iPhone.

This year was to be the year I just carried on and paid the eight remaining instalments to own my XS outright. But my mother’s offer to pay me the settlement figure for my plan in return for the device was enough to tempt me to get the iPhone 11 (max model) on a new iUp plan.

5G rollout outside the few big cities won’t be anywhere near vast by the time the 2020 phones are out.

...add to the fact that 4G is still sporadic in many of these so called 'big cities'!!

Ha - my precious! o_O

Yep, a big part of this annual ritual is reading all the denial posts from familiar avatars *knowing* that they're going to fold eventually ... Definitely a weird skewed demographic of obsessives here.

...me - in denial? Never...!!!!!!!!!! :p

I’m waiting to see if it will be a big upgrade from my iPhone X. I’m hoping the camera gets an upgrade, using the camera when on holidays and or just visiting places is number one on my list.

Heads up for anyone selling selling their current phones. £1 selling fees are back on eBay this weekend (don't forgot PayPal at 3.4%).

Probably too early for most but you could list at a higher price and reduce closer to launch to benefit from reduced fees. However the market will undoubtedly become flooded, plus the obvious risks associated with eBay selling.

iPhone 11 Pro or Pro Max..hmm..anyone else?

I'm personally going for the new Pro Max/Max Version. I've had a Oneplus 6 for 1 year and i sold that. Got tired of android and didn't like it. I'm living with my SE untill the release. I think it will be a nice upgrade since I've never had a larger iPhone than the SE :)

Wheres everyone planning to purchase theirs from?

I'm leaning towards Very as they will most certainly offering a 10% off first credit order. Considering they're already expensive, 10% off would be nice.

Used them in the past 3 years ago but my accounts closed, so hopefully If I create a new one I'll be eligible.
