The new Echo 4 Dot arrived, wow what a bargain at £28.99, placed them side by side, the Dot oozes quality and well thought out design, raised buttons for visually impaired, a visual light you can see from any angle, actual function buttons and Aux 3.5, the dust collecting cheap looking plastic top on the HomePod mini which shows fingerprints if you have the black top doesn’t exist on the dot, sound wise the dot is louder and I find it hard to compare sound difference but the mini did sound slightly tinny, at the end of the day these are cheap budget speakers so can’t expect too much, they aren’t going to win any hifi awards, the dot trounces the mini in functionality overall, the mini wins in Apple eco system integration but you are going to be very lonely and miss out on the huge wider outside world connectivity functionality that the Amazon dot offers, it really makes the mini seem archaic with no real understanding or interest in connecting with the bigger world.

Conclusion: The HomePod mini is being returned, my home is fully automated and runs flawlessly on Amazons system, I bought the HomePod to put in my motorhome hoping to benefit from linking my Apple TV’s to it but lack of any other real functionally killed it off, Amazon are King and this new bargain dot will now be a great addition.

£99 mini v £29.99 dot? The dot is an absolute steal at the current offer price!
Nice review and can't disagree that the price of the Echo is an absolute steal.

I've not heard either the HomePod Mini nor the new Echo Dot myself but the WhatHiFi review is quite clear that the HomePod offers better sound and merits 5 stars to the Echo's 4 stars.

That said, the much lower price point and the better integration with 3rd party services is likely to see many more Echo Dots sold than HomePod Minis.

Challenge with HomePod is its limitation. I hope I can jump to whole ecosystem one day without compromising my needs.
I believe HomePod mini might be much superior in sound quality. Or even better with stereo setup using HomePod combo.

More than happy with my HomePod Mini, perfect for me and the family. Already ordered 2x more for the kitchen and dinning room. There are no limitation for me, the whole family are fully Apple including for Music.

The sound is a personal thing and I guess depends on what you are playing, I found very little difference when I had them side by side, as mentioned the HomePod sounded a bit tinny on some parts of the music whereas the Echo had a more stable louder output. You can only get so much in one of those speakers, maybe the HomePod could do with a little more weight in it, it weighs 313g compared to the Echo at 325g, the top of the HomePod mini, well the white one I have looks cheap plastic with a cheap lightly printed + and - on that is hard to see when its lit, it will be a dust bowl and the black always looks dirty with fingerprints all over it, a visually impaired person would have no idea where the plus or minus was and touching the top too much will change functions, wheels the Echo is, well its just perfect.

I must say neither App is brilliant but I am too deeply invested to change, it would have to be something super dooper to make me change my mind and the HomePod just isn't the one, its a shame they couldn't work together because you would then have the perfect machine but they are both mega companies that I don't see doing that. I have Echo shows and rarely use them for the screen although they do show up the security cameras and ring doorbell as well as any other cameras you may have, you can also use the for media which I don't but handy for cooking recipes, weather and news visually.

At the moment would you have 3 Echos that integrate with so many more devices or one HomePod mini with shall we say similar sound that is pretty much trapped within its own eco system, its a no brainer for me but there will always be Apple logo collectors, and yes I am an Apple fanboy but recently seen big changes that for me anyway don't make sense. I have actually been over to the new Apple Park HQ in California to look around, I can see how when people are trapped working in there they can lose touch with reality, but there is no doubt they have some of the best engineers in the world, there is just something missing recently, I could call it being in touch with your customers wants and needs, but hey its a huge world and different countries and cultures like different things, you never know maybe they look at this forum now and again, so here's hoping we get less flops.

Here are some pics from Apple Park including the huge underground car park I had NO problem parking in there with my huge Ford Explorer Extended, they also have a shop where you can buy exclusive products that are only sold there with the 'Ring' on, some of which I have taken out of a drawer and photographed this evening for you, I also put in a photo of one of the cafes, may be of interest to some people 👍

About trapping in the ecosystem, some of us including me are consciously trapped and full of consent.
For instance, iPhone is technological wise so far behind that of android devices but stability is quite okay as it is sitting on known technology and working around it. So I am happy with what it offers.
The thing worth to mention is Mac product. My MBP is still strong with 9 and half years and creeping into 10 years milestone. But that’s also only for old model and newly launched are harder or near impossible to upgrade like SSD or memory upgrade.

When I digest that fact, not every Apple product line is for me and products are widely chosen based on its needs and fit for purpose. I believe everyone has their justification for his/her decision. None is wiser or other way.

And the thing about sound, do not start with me please. I am starting to immerse the journey of sound quality.

Nice. Can you just turn up at the Apple Park or is it appointment only?

So my 11 Pro Max 512GB was picked up by DPD on Monday to take back to Re Buy. They had quoted me £717 online for my phone. I was concerned they would find something wrong with it and reduce the value. As it happened I didn’t need to be concerned as they accepted my phone for the full quoted value and transferred the money into my account. 😃👍

Sometimes its healthy to stick your head over the parapet and have a little look around, I am 100% begins you re quality when it eventually comes, or should I said came, as I am seeing new things appear that dont have the old standard of quality, I guess the accountants have been involved penny pinching and the PR department coming out with nonsense, also the upgrade ability of memory which is now soldered in, all done to make life more difficult.

I am trapped as I am so deep with Apple it would be nightmare to change, I guess its like Amazon, once you are sucked into the next day delivery and superb customer service, pretty much free storage of your photos, music, videos e.t.c e.t.c. you find it hard to leave its so good.

I got the Homehib mini out the drawer and played it again one at one ear one at the other, the voices are so pronounced on the Echo compared to the muffle of the mini, the rest its hard to compare apart from styling, and I repeat that dish at the top of the mini is going to be a nightmare for collecting dust and dirt, so beware any OCD people out there.

These toy speakers, and I say toy as that is what they are compared to any real speaker as they are small and made to a price, are fine for a desk or small room but please don't kid yourself they are any hifi unit, if you go in with that attitude then anything else is a bonus. If you want good quality, versatility, style and superb sound for the money invest in Sonos, I am moving from B&O to Sonos gradually but have a full surround set up in one room with sound bar, sub and 2 x Play 1's and that is mind blowing for the money when watching action movies.

Keep safe out there I am off to play mini golf 😄

That’s great news. It’s always a relief when recyclers don’t try to knock you down.

Google supply staff with free bikes to get around the campus, they don’t seem to get nicked though 😁. And yes they also have a shop that sells anything you can possibly put a logo on!

Just bought my daughter an Echo 3rd gen earlier today to use as a speaker for her monitor, its one of the few that have a line in, I have a couple of smaller Echo dot 3rd gen on my boat in the cabins and they sound great for the size, low profile and discreet, great for intercom use between cabins and background music although sound is superb https://www.amazon.co.uk/s?k=Echo&ref=nb_sb_noss_2

Goodness me I didn’t realise I had bought 26 of the things 🤣

I saw the same. I think it's a price drop in the run up to Black Friday next week.

Yes Prime day and Black Friday they come up on deals, grab one and give it a go, nothing to lose, even the small puck size Echo Dot (3rd gen) ones are great fun, I have given the mini a go.

Similar, IP Pro Max 256 was collected by DPD on Saturday (after being booked in for Monday) and the full quoted value (£601) was in my bank account by lunchtime on Monday.

Went to the Apple store today to pick up my Magsafe charger but they wouldn't give me it due to having no Picture ID?

It didn't say in my collection email i was to bring one?

I just ended up cancelling the order and have got the Magsafe charger from elsewhere.

Never had much issues trying to get into a store before.

Thought I can freely roam here with no intact to my pocket after iPhone launch as mini is not my interest and M1 is out of my assigned budget.
I blame all of you. Saw from here that the Echo has been dropped to £59.99 with hue bulb and dot with clock at £38. Straight away cancel dot and ordered for those

This thread is indeed not pocket friendly

Still nothing today! Almost a week with my new 12 Pro Max and i can't use it to full capacity!

Had the dispatch text this morning! I ordered it 8 DAYS ago!

Whats most frustrating is, they can surely see im using an eSim! So i would of thought it would be common sense to stick a QR code in with the phone! If not a SIM at least (Like they said they were)

I got both my esims yesterday that where order on a Friday and Saturday.
