Yes, the glass back is the question. That’s why it’s likely to be a combination of insurance to cover loss or theft and Apple care to make any glass damage repairs
I see from a link posted earlier today that Apple will charge $399 for a replacement glass back on the IPhone 8+ in the USA. Knowing Apple, that will mean £399 here in the UK. That is one massive pile of dough for a repair and actually exceeds by some margin the cost of all the components in an iPhone 8+.

I have to confess that I am growing increasingly disillusioned with Apple.

I tend to stick to my local CEX, CPW or O2 recycle whom I have never had a single problem with.

I have come to the conclusion that with such an expensive phone that mobile phone insurance and applecare+ is pretty much a must.

Obviously no one knows for sure until someone actually tries to claim on insurance for a glass back, but...

... if the glass back were to be so smashed that it could never be considered ‘cosmetic’ the insurers would have to pay up - wouldn’t they?

If not I foresee a lot of people ‘losing’ their phones right after a drop incident..

I fear your conversion is spot on from as you say previous pricing. Nonetheless am horrified. Definitely will need a case!

I wouldn't have any confidence so would probably drive over it to be sure!

I got the 8 plus last Friday.

Congrats!

Never too late.

... until after it's damaged or stolen of course! :p

I haven't taken insurance eon my iphone, maybe I should have.
Do it with your bank far better and they don’t care which phone you have and if you want a new one every year before selling just smash it up and you get a brand new one lol

That has got to be right. Saves a lot of anxiety.

Having said that I personally wouldn't bother with Applecare because my home insurance (with accidental damage cover) is very good.
But not comparable to AC+ as you’d have to send it away to a 3rd party repairer, be without the phone and void any remaining Apple warranty?

But the impact on your premium at renewal wouldn’t be so good the following year if you had to make a claim

I disagree. Not with quality insurance.

Never had a problem. There again I'm very careful with my stuff and would only claim if absolutely necessary.

No-one should be under any illusion: Applecare is very expensive for what it is.

Would they cover the cost for you to take your phone into an Apple store and get it repaired/replaced?

[Edit] - if not, it’s not comparable.

I’ll be doing both. I’m not going to be able to ban the kids from touching my phone and I’ve seen the state of my iPad Air.

That and I’m likely to get a bit merry and drop it anyway

Except my bank (TSB) have a higher excess on iPhone claims . Whilst this may be justified now I don't think it was previously in terms of comparative prices of phones. Maybe iPhones were/are more desirable to thieves.

Not wishing to jinx things I am very careful too and only really had one accident with my iPhone. I woke up one morning to find my iPhone (quite an early model - prob the 3GS) sitting by my bedside in a half drunk cup of tea. I had a habit of resting my phone over the top of cups at the time but was more surprised that I hadn't finished my cup of tea. Not normal behaviour for me!! Must have done it in my sleep. I think the (bank) insurance just gave me money for a replacement as they had no replacement models in stock which was handy as was about to upgrade. Wasn't deliberate - honest guv!!

Also for quite a few years I have bought outright (rather than on contract with a carrier) which is good for ensuring you understand its true value! Though I could never understand why people thought carriers should simply replace handsets because they were free (or rather had not upfront cost) on their contract......

So Envirofone sent through a photo of the phone with a bent case. It wasn't like that when I sent it in.

Anyone had any experience claiming through the post office for damage?

I’d ask for a picture with serial number displayed, if you haven’t already.

I sold an Apple keyboard once and the post office managed to damage it. Submitted a claim and 4 weeks later they gave me about £15.

Having spent a few days with the 8 Plus I’ve decided to return it. I don’t know... it’s missing a certain X-factor ;) Might keep hold of my 7 Plus or might jump onboard the hype train for the X after being very dismissive initially. Maybe see you back here in 4 weeks

Did they say anything when you showed them the condition it was in before it was sent?

I have photos of the front and back but not the side view which is what they have sent through showing the bend.

£15 doesn’t seem a lot. I did send the phone on the option for up to £500 insurance so hopefully that’ll help.
