When at the Apple store earlier I had a good look at the cases. Have to say I really liked the dark olive silicon case. Think I’ll be getting this over the saddle brown leather I had in mind with the silver X.

I’m not 100% in this but the US don’t normally get unlocked iPhones from day 1. They’ll be locked to whichever US network you choose.

At least that’s how it used to be.

Just had a look at Apple.com/ and they are offering SIM Free and Unlocked.

You are right in saying in previous years it’s been a while before you could purchase one outright.

EE get speeds a lot higher than 60Mb/s.

My local mast (currently not running at full speed due to a back haul issue, hence the low upload)

Working perfectly, this is what EE is capable of:

And there’s me happy with getting around 80 meg with o2 in Heanor-EE are really leading the way with LTE-A speeds!

I have been using a Galaxy S8+ for the last week and I have to say that it is a seriously impressive piece of kit.

I say that having had a new iPhone every year since the very first one in November 2007. I've had every model except the 5c and the SE.
Whats the battery life like?

173MB? Damn

I have one of the 4G EE portable wifi and it got about 67MB i think but to get that much is crazy. Guess it depends on what part of the city I suppose

I definitely recommend the silicon over the leather cases. I have had 2 apple leather cases/covers and both looked pretty dirty and scratched very quickly. Such a waste of money......

I forgot to check out cases at the weekend but did have my eye on the olive green silicon sport band. Would have been nice against a decent shade of gold  but am now thinks matching watch straps and phone cases could look good  . Might get the white silicone case though I bet that doesn't stay white very long with me!

I agree. You get a better grip with the silicone too.

Out of interest why would the 29w be better than a 61w?

Edit: I googled it so think I understand....basically the maximum wattage the phone charges is 29w - so in theory a 61w charger, although fine to use, is not needed?

Correct. The higher wattage cable is overkill (although it would work) and is therefore a waste of money.

Agree with the comments on the leather cases. They look great out the box but soon get battered. The display cases in store already looked like they had taken some abuse. The saddle brown ones had scratch marks on the cases. I know it’s a natural material and some people will like the ‘weathered’ look but it’s not for me.

I’m also hoping that going back from the plus size to a smaller form factor with the X will mean better grip generally

Re the silicone cases...

I had a 6s Plus with a red silicone case and then changed to a black leather one.

I recently got an 8 Plus and picked up a blue silicone case from Currys for £17.97.

My observation is that although the phone is now protected from drops, it’s actually more slippy in the case! The glass ‘sticks’ well in your hand whereas the silicone doesn’t.

Better start saving for another leather one, lol.

I much prefer the leather cases. Mine always last. Scratches? It’s leather! Adds character.

Don’t think I’m brave enough to go caseless with this phone.

Agreed. I really wanted to go caseless but after reading the ifixit review and then the likely cost (£79!) of repairing the back glass under Apple Care I just can’t risk it.
£149 for Apple Care and then another £79 if you actually have to call on it is insane, imho.

Not my kind of character!! You can run your fingernail gently along the case and it scratches. My leather handbags and jackets do not do that! Possibly not so bad if keeping in your pocket but in my handbag it was wrecked. And that's before the general dirt built up!

Do we know what the price is likely to be without AppleCare? I wonder if 3rd party insurances will cover replacement of the back glass? I have insurance through my bank. I wouldnt be surprised if they deemed it an unnecessary repair since not the screen!

I’d only assume the screen and other damage repair costs will be more than the prices for the 8

I forget the exact figure that I read, but it was circa £360 from Apple without Apple Care - deemed an ‘other’ repair (ie not the same price as the screen, which by all accounts is a lot easier to remove!).

Edit - here’s the article
