Man I am confused. So the first thing I do is cancel the applecare? Then Apple refund that amount and take it off any remaining balance I owe Barclays. I then sell the phone and contact Barclays to pay off what is left?

I need a step by step here...!

Oh man, I've been right where you are I think. I feel like I've got my head around this one.

Are you on the Upgrade Program or the Apple Finance?

I've never understood people that say they can't reach the top of their phone..?!

I'm guessing you are one of the hundreds of people who hold the phone with 3 fingers on the back, your pinky finger at the bottom (the base of the phone, where the speakers are, rest on your pinky) and with your thumb, hovering over the screen, ready to navigate. Well, of course, in this position, then it is extremely difficult to reach the top of the display as your thumb, physically does not reach up there......

However.....

I have taught myself to hold the phone differently - with ALL four fingers, against the back of the phone (the phone rests at a 45 degree angle on the four fingers) with your thumb hovering above the screen ready to navigate. In this position, it is extremely easy to reach the top of the display and even well beyond it. Your fingers all hold the phone and your thumb navigates the screen.

It really irks me whenever I see iPhone users using their pinky as in the first method - it's no wonder they can't reach the top of the screen..!!!o_O
Or we just have smaller hands than you?

If I hold my 8 Plus at the bottom (pinky supporting), I need to shuffle to reach the top. If I hold it towards the top, I need to shuffle to get to the bottom.

What would you do?

EE has offered me the following deal, as I get 20% off via employee portal:

iPhone XS Max 256GB any colour no upfront
£70 PM 100GB Max Plan
This works out at £17.95 per month for 100GB Max once the phone price is deducted

or

iPhone XS Max 512GB any colour no upfront
£78 PM 100GB Max Plan
This works out at £17.62 per month for 100GB Max once the phone price is deducted

This includes the 20% off.

I have an order for an outright purchase.

Sounds about right. Clearly the longer after the 11th payment you have to wait to upgrade the less value you get from Apple for your device.

You could be better off doing what a few will be (me included) in paying off Barclays/IUP by selling the phone and also claiming any remaining AppleCare

Thanks for replying, Jinjin. I’ve got it saved on Music Magpie for £440, including the tech10 deal so will probably do that.

haha

OK this is how I plan to do it!

1) see if apple let me use my IUP upgrade reservation as a new IUP loan and keep my existing
2) if 1 is OK, send current X to Music Magpie
3) once Mapgie confirm they're received the phone and will give me the money quoted (i.e. not claiming theres damage etc) then pay off Barclays
4) cancel apple care and wait for refund. Not cancelling apple care until Magpie have confirm the device and price is fixed. don't want some 'damage' to appear on my X and me ask magpie to return my phone and then not having AppleCare to fix it!

5) and chill, being around £160 better off

Fab, I will do the same however keep the iUp going (in order to sell it after the 29th) and take out a new phone plan on the iphone payments instead.

do share please! I am on the iUP with the X, BUT I plan on cancelling it by selling my X and paying off Barclays. I have a reservation in store for the iUP upgrade on the 29th of September where I plan on taking a new plan out, however, not on the iUP and going down the iphone payments route instead.

I know my final Barclays balance as they emailed me as soon as I booked a reservation for the apple store. It's the Applecare refund bit that is confusing me, and when to request the refund.

Sorry to be one of those people asking something probably quite obvious to those that know - Im fully familiar with the o2 pre-order process having gone through them the last ~10 years but less so with the Apple pre-prder process.

Due to a shambolic attempt at upgrading through o2 I decided to chance Apple sim-free but was quoted 25/9-2/10 for delivery by the time I got round to it...

I might be wrong but seem to remember previous years some people say these later dates can move forward closer to release date?

Can anyone familiar with pre-ordering through Apple quickly advise when they would expect the delivery date to move forward if it was at all - would it have happened by now, or can it move as late as a day or so before?

I'm pretty underwhelmed to say the least with these latest models - the larger screen being the only real draw - so was tempted not to get the latest model for the first time since the original iPhone if delivery was going to drag on a couple weeks.

Thanks.
If we see an improvement in the timings it should show after the initial batch have been received this Friday. I, hoping for a little boost also, my dates are 24-1st Oct .. 24th would be good and is possible from what I’ve seen last years and the fact that there appear to be fewer stock issues this year so far!

hopefully you're set now. you can cancel the AppleCare at the same time as you pay off Barclays. The only thing being is that apple will pay the refund to Barclays who would then take that amount of your loan, but as you'd have already paid up, Barclays would then pay it back ti the account you make your direct debit from.

from the t&cs..

  1. Termination of your Instalment Loan and Cancellation of Financed AppleCare+. You understand that you have purchased AppleCare+ with funds borrowed from Bank under an Instalment Loan. If the Instalment Loan is terminated, you must cancel your Financed AppleCare+ policy by contacting AppleCare at: 0800 107 6285. If you do not cancel AppleCare+ on your own, you agree that Bank is permitted to cancel AppleCare+ on your behalf. In any such event, any refund due on your Financed AppleCare+ will be paid to Bank as a payment toward any amount owed by you to Bank. If the Financed AppleCare+ refunded amount is greater than the amount owed on the Instalment Loan, Bank will pay the balance to the bank account you used to enrol in the iPhone Upgrade Programme.
  2. Cancellation of Financed AppleCare+. If during the term of your Instalment Loan you cancel your Financed AppleCare+ policy associated with your iPhone Upgrade Programme or if it is cancelled in accordance with the AppleCare+ Terms and Conditions, any refund due on your Financed AppleCare+ will be paid to Bank as a payment toward any amount owed by you to Bank. If the AppleCare+ refunded amount is greater than the amount owed on the Instalment Loan, Bank will pay the balance to the bank account you used to enrol in the iPhone Upgrade Programme.

In exactly the same position as you!

I've been on the phone with Barclays and Apple today.

Basically, if you're on the iUP, you have two choices on Friday.

1. When you arrive in store to pick up your new iPhone you can give your current X back and take out a new contract and you're good to go after paying £56 + £69 (11th month + upfront cost).

2. You can keep your phone and take out a brand new contract (providing your credit score is good).

I'm going for 2. Friday afternoon I'll send the X off to MM and wait for them to send me the money (if all goes to plan). Once they sent the money I will call Barclays and pay off the final total for the iPhone.

@Jinjin - I called about getting a refund for AppleCare but they said it wouldn't be possible, but I see where you're coming from as you won't use the final 12 months of it.

Has anyone had any news about delivery’s yet in the U.K? (Seen as there are unboxing videos out)
I’ve upgraded over the phone with Carphone Warehouse and they are saying delivery on Friday (to store via DPD)

Again, very useful info sir! So basically you don't even need to ring up apple yourself to cancel the applecare, Barclays does it for you? I bet the wait time on that is a lot longer though, so might be worth ringing up ourselves?

superb thanks, this is what I understood from what Jinjin was saying also. Is there an upfront payment if you go down the iphone payments route?

Not that I can see, however you don't get the AppleCare with that. I'm torn but think I prefer the safety of AppleCare even though I seldom use it.

Yup on the last 12 months of it.. plus it’s in their t&cs. They can’t charge you for something you can’t use

I have never used it, and I have probably jinxed myself now by saying that. That's why I am 60/40 on going down the iphone payments option. Save £120 a year. It just seems like a lot of hassle where I could literally just hand them my X and get the max for £5 more a month than im paying now on the iUP...

is it 12 months worth? I thought it was spread over 20 months, so it would be 9 months worth assuming you have paid the 11th month?

Yes same £69 upfront then the rest split over 20 months for iPhone payments. It’s all there on the website

You get 24 months of AppleCare with the cost split over 20 payments. After a year you’ve got 12 months left. You’ve make 11 payments out of the 20 so the remaining AppleCare refund will be ~(199/20)* 9
