Hi guys,

a few questions (might be dumb ones, but I hope you can help)...

Since iPhone 3, I've normally gone on to the Apple website on the day of launch and ordered at 0801BST for a home delivery. However, I'm thinking of getting the iPhone XS 64gb on the IUP.

If I go online tomorrow at 0801 and order, what do I do? Can I arrange for in-store pickup and deal with the IUP requirements when I get there? Do you have to stand in line, or do you get a slot for pickup?

Also, I'm going to trade in my iPhone 7 128gb (Apple is currently offering £170, which I'm fine with, as I'd lose on eBay's percentage markup and also lose on PayPal's racketeering fees anyway). It says on the site that you get a gift voucher, so does my trade-in value bring the monthly cost down, or can I only use that voucher for some other purchase?

All advice would be appreciate.

Best,

CDC

Yes uk people always get taken like mugs we hardly do anything about it just look at virgin media price rise (March RPI November £3) twice in one year.
Energy and mobile companies here have us like mugs too with yearly price rises.
But unlike energy companies, you can get by without buying a new phone every year. No one is making you buy it.

As I said, in my view it feels smaller.

...are you able to expand on this - in what way exactly?!

Apple Care doesn’t come with theft and loss in the UK I guess...? If so, what a shame :(

...it does now:

EDIT - Seems that this is only for U.S. customers.

UK prices are a joke, I remember Apple last year using Brexit as an excuse because they thought the pound would tumble against the Dollar which hasn't happened. This year they don't have an excuse to changing the $ to a £ symbol.

Saying that, I had a quick look around various Apple stores. From what I can tell, Switzerland is the cheapest to buy the new iPhones. XS 64gb is £50 less than the UK. Everywhere else seems to be £20-50 more expensive than the UK. I'd imagine this would apply across all models.

Outside of Europe, the US is the cheapest before tax at $999/£765 (or $1099/£842 as some states charge around 10%).

However Hong Kong and Japan come in slightly cheaper around £839.

The gap between US/Japan/HK and UK prices widens as you go for other models quite considerably from what I see. Yes we're being ripped off but from what I can tell, majority of the world is being screwed over by more than us which for a trillion dollar company is a joke but that's the times we live in.

I'll stick with my trusty 8+, hasn't failed me yet.

Yeah i have to agree these prices are ridiculous, i didn't upgrade last year because i wanted to wait for the Plus(max) size X so i will defo be upgrading, but unless next year was a major reboot then i couldn't see why i'd upgrade year on year.

The other flip side of the coin is if you own the X your phone is still very relevant which is pretty great news!

I don't understand why anyone would trade in their phone to Apple on iUP or iPP, you are essentially giving apple free money. After 11 months, your phone is worth more than what is left on the loan. Selling to Mizuma Mobile or Envirophone or any of those guys is literally a case of filling in the form, putting phone in box (that they send you) drop off at post office, and 2 days later the cash is in your account. My example this year:

Trade in to Apple, Apple pays off £340 left on balance of loan. I get a new phone.
Trade in to Mizuma, I get £460, I pay off the £340. I get a new phone+£120.

....your forgetting that selling and sending your phone to these companies, then leaves you phoneless if you don't have a spare.

Not being funny but I would never be prepared to send my phone in a box, to a company who says that they will pay me x amount for it. What if the phone gets lost in transit or something like that and for whatever reason, it doesn't turn up at the destination?! You're left with no phone and no cash...:(

You reserve a device for pickup. You can pick it up at any time during the day (though you do officially have a timeslot if I remember). Last year I was there at opening and had to wait in line (a different line to un-reserved people). You deal with the details there to sign up. Not sure how using a voucher would work, doubt you could use it agains an iUP. Better off trading in to Mazuma or someone like that - you'll get more from them (I just checked £190) and it'll be cash. Apple trade in is a sucky option in my opinion.

No, because you send it in after you pickup the new one. I have done this for the last two years. Have you ever heard of postage insurance? . They are reputable companies and I have used them plenty of times for lots of devices, never once had an issue with them.

...you'll reserve a phone and a time slot via the Apple Store App/website and then go in store, at your reserved time slot to complete sign up for the IUP and collect your device.

Additionally, you are not required to send your phone back to Apple after 11 months on the iup.

You can keep the decide and pay of the remaining balance / payments or decide to sell and assuming you sell it for more than what is owed on the loan make a profit too.

By going on ip it’s no different to iup - you are still giving Apple / Barclays your money. iup saves you the hassle of selling and paying off the loan yourself if that’s what you do every year on ip. Only benefit I see from your side is making £120 profit.

The iPhone X doesn’t have a bigger screen than the 8 Plus. The diagonal length is larger, but area-wise, the 8 Plus is larger.

...all screens, whether talking about phones, TVs, PC monitors, etc, are measured using diagonals, which means that the iPhone X does indeed have a larger screen than the 8 Plus:

Lol, ok. Ill take the 5 minutes it takes to drop my phone off at a post office and phone Barclays to pay the loan off (its all automated) for £120. I guess to some people that really is not worth it for the "hassle" of 5 mins...

I will upgrade my 6s 64gb to max S 256 or 512gb. Just waiting for confirmation from EE/Vodafone on how the esim will work. Plan to use the phone for 5 years.

If I upgrade S1 AW as well, then will the get the 256gb max s and use the £200 difference towards the S4 AW.

...thats not possible if you're on the IUP as you have to hand the old phone back - unless you don't upgrade and pay off the remainder of the balance over the next year.

They’re measured that way by convention, yes, but diagonal length doesn’t tell you much unless you include aspect ratio with it.

The Plus has a larger area than the X, yes that might be partially due to the notch, but that doesn’t negate the fact that the Plus has more usable area.

Pretty sure the cpw phones locking to first sim is no longer the case. Memories of a pretty long debate on this last year and I called and spoke to a number of people at cpw saying that this locking was no long the case.

They don’t. Bought my x from there last year. Took out AppleCare plus and asked them when I was buying. Unlocked confirmed by Apple.

Yes it is. You can choose to start a new iUP and pay off the old one in exactly the same way as you can iPP.

Taken directly from Apple's iUP page:

Can I pay off my loan early?
Yes. You can pay off the balance of your loan at any time by contacting Barclays. By paying off the balance of your loan in full, you will no longer be eligible to upgrade but you can apply to start a new programme at any time with your new choice of model.

...I guess it really boils down to what type of user you are - if you use your phone to watch video content in landscape then of course, you'll notice a difference.

However, personally, I never use my phone for any type of video or any landscape content (have an iPad Air 2 for that) for that matter, so its not going to bother me at all.

I got a quote yesterday morning of £620 from Mazuma for my 256gb X of £620. That's basically what I have left to pay on iUP give or take. So my X will be going back to Apple next week.

Does anyone know when the EE XS & XS Max prices likely to become available surely not 9am tomorrow? Hope we get them tonight.

I also do this every year and have had no issues. Envirophone is the way to go. Once you account for selling fees on ebay it makes the most sense.

Oh poo. eSIM Dual SIM feature will be enabled at a later date. Come on now Apple.
I missed the part where they said dual Sim won’t be available immediately. I’m so disappointed that real dual Sim is only sold in China, eDim is useless as hardly any carriers offer it. I need cheap UK PAYG eSim, currently
You can't be so sure. Is it written in black and white? Could be some agent who doesn't know what he's/she's talking about.

It says clearly on the Apple website, the dual-sim slot is only available in China, Hong Kong and Macau markets.

So until this confirmed by Three, in an article or in the XS product page by them, don't believe it and EE are the only supported carrier with dual-SIM.
I am very doubtful as well but have just done a chat with 3 and they’re insisting you can use 2 physical SIM cards. I made them send an email confirmation, although I see they’ve left out the word “physical”.
“The iPhone XS and XS Max both take a Nano SIM, and for the first time ever in an iPhone, now support Dual SIM capabilities. Three will offer the dual SIM iPhones (iPhone XS and XS Max).

They will support 2 SIM cards and you will be able to use 2 SIM cards / numbers in one of the above model.
They do not need to be Three SIM cards. You can use any GSM SIM cards from any network as the phone will be pre unlocked. It will be sent unlocked and you do not have to make any request to unlock it. It is factory unlocked.”
