HIS 4890 1GB - tearing issue while in dual screen

Hi everybody,
i have to come back here since i am still experiencing tearing issues on my apple 30" when it is in dual screen with a apple 20".
I have a HIS 4890 1GB graphic card witch work fine otherwise in bootcamp or in macosX in single monitor configuration.
I have made the 10.6.6 apple and Netkas update via Zeus without problem.
Maybe there a better ROM i can use to flash the card, or other drivers....i don't know.
Please help, i'm a graphic designer and the dual configuration is a must have for my work.
Thanks for your help guys.

Fred from France

Only solution for me so far

Hi, after trying all the ideas being thrown around so far i've found a work-around that has worked for me.

I've installed the patche found here: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1077090/

Then installed the 10.6.3 kext patch from zeus and everything loaded up ok now with opengl acceleration.

However, as my system is now running older extensions/framework it means slower fame rates (as confirmed with opengl viewer). Would there be any guides on making a 10.6.6 patch specific for my video card? If so i'd like to give it a try so i can be running 10.6.6 extensions.

(additional: my card is a ATI Radeon Sapphire HD4890 1GB HDMI/DVI/DP)

+1. This worked for me too (Sapphire NE, Hynix, rom #2). Framerates suck, but at least I can browse the web without Chrome crashing all the time, and I can boot in Windows for games. Thanks!

sapphire vapor-x running 10.6.6 with QE

I used ikari2002's fix to finally get my card QE for the first time since I purchased it... However, world of warcraft won't launch unless I rig it to opengl mode then says i need 10.6.4 or later for graphics support. If anybody finds a better fix I'll paypal 20 bucks because I really don't want to revert to my 64mb stock card. Thank you cindori, keita1, and ikari for current progress

It seems this thread has died down a bit.

Since 10.6.7, how are things working? I haven't seen anything on netkas' website, as he usually posts a heads up after a patch drops.

You are correct, I've been watching both Netkas' and CIndori's blog as well as this forum and since the release of 10.6.7 still no word on a new QECI patch.

Perhaps everything has died regarding us with 4890 cards?

Are there exams going on in Europe right now? Perhaps they are tied up with school, but Cindori usually let's us know something.

Rominator just posted on Netkas' forums that he (Netkas) is out on vacation for a few more days. I'd imagine he'll release a patch when he gets back.

there are 2 types of 4890, one can be patched already (because it can only use old drivers)

Are you one of those who has been using special tricks, old-driver-blendings, or special packages like Keita's, since 10.6.4?

Then you will still need to use those.
Do like post #11 here:

Are you one of those who has gotten QECI instantly up and running with the Zeus (netkas) patch?

Then wait until a new patch is made. Seriously you are not dying because you can't update to 10.6.7, there's nothing good in the update anyway.

"...adjustments that improve the reliability of Back to My Mac, resolves issues when transferring files to SMB Windows Files Sharing servers, and addresses Mac App Store bugs. "

Seriously that's just 300 megabyte dead weight for most users. (and QECI trouble...)

Wow. No need to overreact here. I haven't visited the thread in some time and was a bit out of the loop, thus my question.

As far as your second comment, there is nothing good in the update FOR YOU. For those of us that use SMB server shares several times throughout the day, the update is huge. That being said, I never said anything about needing to update ASAP, so perhaps you shouldn't be jumping to conclusions.

I got my answer from netkas' forums and posted as such. Why you chose to make a mountain out of a mole hill is beyond me.

Maybe he did because he is one of the masterminds behind using exotic cards in OS X and in this thread everybody expects him to do "something" because they've upgraded (as in "they felt the urge to increase their build number sooner than their neighbour").

Teach us how to make these patches!

Maybe it would be a good ting to make a tutorial of what needs to be done and how, so others could help out with making these patches.
There are many talented people here that probably could help Cindori/Netkas with it.

You need to learn assembler.
You can start here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assembly_language#Assembler

Then you need to disassemble the 4870 drivers (reverse engineering)

Then you need extensive knowledge of the tables, to be able to understand the disassembled code (this is very low programming)

Once you're there, you just simply add a device number (4890) and then recompile everything.

Netkas is the master of this, and he is kind enough to keep doing it for the last 12 OS updates or so, even though he doesnt even have a 4890.
So I think that he should be given a break, even if he says "fk it, i cba" his decision should be treaten with respect and gratefulness for his earlier work.

I didn't make a "mountain of a mole hill" in my earlier post, I calmly explained the situation and what steps should be taken for the different 4890 versions.

@Cindori

I don't think you over reacted before, i thought you were straight forward explaining things.

Regarding making the patches available to us, all i can say is that it's been highly appreciated and donate some more $.
Hopefully we'll getting the patches for a while longer.
Without you guys i wouldn't even have a 4890 in my MP.

Cheers and keep up the outstanding work :D

The patch was released and I'm up and running in 10.6.7, but I still have bad frame rates in World of Warcraft for some reason. This started in 10.6.6, but the interesting thing is that it's only when I go from ”fair” graphics settings (which is 60 FPS smooth) to ”good” (and higher) which gives a jump down to around 20 FPS. So it seems there's some setting in the higher graphics setting that suddenly makes the frames per second drop.

Anyone else have this?

What's interesting is that all other games I've tried, like Starcraft 2 and Call of Duty 4 run as smooth as ever with the highest graphics settings.

This has been a known issue in many forums, including the official Mac-user WoW forum. There are two specific settings that you need to be concerned about that drastically affect frame rates: Liquid Detail, and Sunshafts. You can pretty much set ALL other settings to the higher end, but for both of those, Sunshafts need to be turned OFF, and Liquid cannot go higher than "Fair".

Your FPS issues should go away if you change those two options.

Well, I've been trying to get an XFX 4890 up on a 3,1 MacPro w/ 10.6.7 with no success.

After the 10.6.7 update, there were lots horizontal lines appearing whenever there was movement on screen (e.g. mouse), and no acceleration either.

Installed Cindori's patch, still no QE/CI, but the horizontal lines stopped.

Played around some more, the horizontal lines came back.

Reverted to post-10.6.7 update kexts.

Any ideas what I can try to enable QE/CI with this setup?

I know this isn't a for-sale thread, but if anyone is interested I will be selling my HIS 4890. PM me if anyone here is interested.

Thanks again Cindori for all your hard work and help. You are a great asset to this forum.

Hi, as Cindori mentions in his post above the Keita 1 extensions method has worked to get my ATI Radeon Sapphire HD4890 1GB HDMI/DVI/DP enabled with QECI acceleration under 10.6.8.

After installing the Keita 1 extensions i then rolled back through all the Zues patches until i came to one that it recognised as working, which was 10.6.3. I then repaired my disk permissions and restarted.

Also to note is that the Keita installer package wouldn't run, so i did a manual install using Pacifist / Kext Helper b7 to put the extensions and frameworks in the correct places.

I don't want to double post but i have some questions which can be found here:
https://forums.macrumors.com/posts/13090397/

Would love to figure out a cleaner more up-to-date method for getting things working with cards like these.

Ati 4890

Yes. You might need two, depending on how long it is.

The cabling will go like this:

Im guessing you mean the first model aka 1,1 aka 2006. If so, that is the one I am using. Anyway, this will work on any Mac Pro ever made.

I just bought the ATI 4890. Do you still have the cabling pics? If so can you please repost? Thanks.
