So is this installation safe, in terms of stability. don't we lose some new enhancements or graphic optimization that come with 10.6.5 ?
I've been running stable for 2 weeks, no problems at all, and I don't think much if anything is lost. I have two 10.6.5 installations on my Mac Pro, a drive with my 10.6.5 modified install using the 4890 and a drive with the straight 10.6.5 update that I run with the OEM Nvidia 7300 in slot 4. Geekbench scores are consistently higher (by about 400 pts) with the 4890.

Thanks for the answer, I will make a try :)

10.6.5

Back up everything first, and post your results here. I'm curious if this fix works for others. One thing I forgot to mention was that I held off on the Safari update until I had installed the various parts of the 10.6.5 update. Updating Safari afterwards gave the System a complete optimization (I also used Xupport to optimize the system while I was experimenting). And Kieta 1 was correct about the older extensions for other graphics cards.

Yep I'm back ... after 1 week break :)

I decided to buy a Sapphire HD5770, that I flashed using atiflash with Rom found at http://forum.netkas.org.
And all is now working fine on 10.6.5 with my new ATI Card and MacPro 1,1.

now I have an unused 4890 for sell :p I customized it with a Accelerator Twin Turbo Fan for less noise. I'm in France so if interested let me know ;)

Happy new year to all of you

Which Sapphire card? I see 3 on New Egg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...=BESTMATCH&Description=Sapphire++5770&x=0&y=0

Also, dod you have to flash the card in windows then boot to 10.6.4 or 10.6.5? I read over at Netkas that the Roms only work in 10.6.5. that makes the upgrade process a tad tricky.

I have a XFX 4890 HD-489x-zsfc v 1.6 - updated to 10.6.5 and tried to patch the driver with zeus, but every time I try QECI is still is not enabled. Do I have to re-flash with a different rom or am I missing something? I've got dual monitors up and no other gfx issues but can't seem to get QECI enabled. any ideas?

The card that I have is http://www.surcouf.com/composants-stockage/produit/sapphire/9669209/radeon-hd5770-1-go-gddr5.html?idnoeud=2734&filter=ListeNum0

I flashed the card under DOS, I created a Boot CD "FreeDOS 1.0". Not so difficult, and a DOS partition on the MAC where I put atiflash and Rom...
Then boot on the CD.... etc...

Could be the same issue as mine, check my post in this topic. That's a reason why I bought a 5770, replacing my 4890 which was working fine under 10.6.4.
And apparently no simple solution except specific installation of 10.6.5 describe in this topic also :)

Balls... yea i saw that but didn't want to have to go through the whole custom install. Will the 5770 work with a 2007 mac pro 1.1?

So has anyone braved 10.6.6 with a 4890 yet?

Think it'd be worth selling on a working 4890 1gb and moving to a 5xxx card? or am I just replacing one firmware juggle with another?

10.6.5 Update

Thanks everyone for their advice! :)

I've successfully upgraded to 10.6.5, but not without some trouble along the way.

First off, something is wrong with the Combo Update from Apple. Every time I try to download it I get the message "Mounting Failed."

I ended up downloading just the regular Update from Apple's support page. Then I ran the dmg and installed everything. Before I restarted I used Cindori's Zeus and downloaded Netkas's QECI patch for the 4890.

Then I restarted. Immediately after hitting the restart button I got a blue screen. It didn't seem like the computer restarted or was installing any updates. The screen just hung in that state. I let it stay like that for about 10 minutes. After that it was pretty clear to me that something was wrong.

I hard shut the computer and pressed the power button. It started, I heard the chime, and took a few moment before showing me another blue screen where it hung for about two minutes. This time it sounded like the computer was doing something and the hard drives were spinning up. Then it got to the screen with the Snow Leopard galaxies (the same screen you get at the login window). Once it got there I still couldn't log in, however. A new window popped up and said an additional installation was needed, and it gave me two options: "Restart" or "Install and Restart."

I chose "Install and Restart." Another message immediately popped up saying there was an error and I had to restart. I restarted. This time everything went fine all the way to the log in screen. I logged in.

Apparently now I'm running 10.6.5. Everything else seems to be running fine as well. No issues thus far.

The installation of 10.6.5 was abnormal to put it mildly. My question is, should I be alarmed over anything because of the way it went?

My card - XFX RadeonHD 4890 1 GB DDR5 Graphic Card HD489XZSFC
My ROM - Peloche's #13 https://forums.macrumors.com/posts/8979635/
My Previous OS - OS X 10.6.4 with graphics update
My Mac - MacPro3,1

Card was working as far as far as I knew.

I tried several things, but always ended up with no QE.
I tried installing update from "Software Update" for 10.6.5, ran Zeus, and it did not seem to work.
SO I started over (restored to point in time machine from SL DVD - before any of recent attempts.)

I followed Redneck1089 procedures. Got the 10.6.5 via direct download from Apple and installed package. Let finish and DID NOT RESTART yet. I installed both drivers downloaded by Zeus. I then restarted after that was completed. I had no blue screens or anything.

Thanks Cindori and Redneck and all others.

No I am off to try to rebuild the partition I accidentally restored over once.

DO NOT FORGET TO BACK UP.

Oh and if you are curious, I did then try to run the 10.6.6 update following same method, but no QE. I had to try, I had only restored my system drive 8 or 10 times, what was one more after all?

Netkas released QE_CI for 10.6.6 but it doesn't appear to be 100% -

For a flashed 4890:

Dual monitors work

QE acceleration does not work

A few people have posted similar comments on Netkas site so I'm sure he will look into it

Hello, I updated to 10.6.6 yesterday and have been trying to fix QE_CI for a day untill i got it working finally. So i'd like to share it with you guys.

Note: I was at 10.6.4, never upgraded to 10.6.5. I had QE_CI working with the 10.6.3 kexts (specific versions later), the ones that don't support OpenGL3.

So i downloaded the combo package and after many tries and failures with pacifist i decided i'd give it a try as is and try to patch it after i upgrade. So i did, i ran the package and upgraded everything as i was supposed to. Restarted, all was fine except.. no QE_CI. So, i installed once more the 10.6.3 kexts with kext helper repaired permissions and restarted. After restart it stuck on loading screen with the apple logo no matter what i would do. I literally tried everything. Actually after trying everything i restored from backup and did the whole updating process once more. I tried replacing OpenGL.framework (located in System>Frameworks) with the one i had prior the update (I did that through my bootable 10.6.4 backup on my external) and repaired permissions. Now that worked like a charm. Booted, logged in, and... QE_CI enabled!! Zeus agrees too hehe. So, 10.6.6, working QE_CI, but without OpenGL3, just like i was at 10.6.4

File versions:
OpenGL.framework 1.6.8.8.0
ATIRadeonX2000GLDriver.bundle 1.6.10.32 (7770)
ATIRadeonX2000VADriver.bundle 1.6.10.32 (7770)
ATIRadeonX2000GA.plugin 1.6.10.32 (7770)
ATI4800Controller.kext 1.6.10
ATIFramebuffer.kext 1.6.10
ATIRadeonX2000.kext 1.6.10
ATISupport.kext 1.6.10

I still don't get what's wrong with OpenGL.framework, but as long as it works fine i'll give it a break for now. Let the game begin ;)

10.6.6 Working with QE/CI

My solution is very similar to sOwL's, I used Kext Helper to install:

OpenGL.framework 1.6.8.8.0
ATIRadeonX2000GLDriver.bundle 1.6.10.32 (7770)
ATI4800Controller.kext 1.6.10
ATIFramebuffer.kext 1.6.10
ATIRadeonX2000.kext 1.6.10
ATISupport.kext 1.6.10

These can all be extracted from the 10.6.4 update. I think there are newer versions of these kexts that will also work, when I have time I will play around with them a little more.

I have a fussy Saphire 4890NE that refused to work in 10.6.5. so I stayed at 10.6.4
Tried Netkas V2 and no joy with 10.6.6.
I tried dbculps set up out of curiosity and it worked. Zeus confirms, iMovie 11 confirms, and expose movement is smooth.
The only difference is the OpenGLframeworks folder is shown as 1.6.9.7.0.
Many thanks...

til 10.7.

Cindori, would you mind making a ROM for me, I tried several, but I guess my card is a little different, I keep getting PN errors. Here's the original, thanks.

Since Cindori is quite busy, perhaps if you gave information as far as to the card you are using (be very specific), and which operating system and update you are working with, someone might know which rom you should try and/or which process to follow.

I hope you get it working soon.

dude use Zeus to automatically generate a rom for you. it's the best function in the whole application and really the one I am most proud of, and I wrote it to not have to do manual requests.

Sorry about that, did not do a thorough enough search and I got a bit ahead of myself (was trying to hex edit the file in windows and screwing something up, hadn't gotten to Zeus yet). I've got a:

Sapphire Vapor-X
PN: 288-1E115-020SA
SKU: 11150-05-20R
Original BIOS: 113-BA9102-V07

I used Zeus to make a ROM after trying several other ROMs, including the one Cindori made for Cybercap who has the same card SKU and everything, to no avail, but it's working now, just downloading the 10.6.4 update to the OSX side going w/QE. Thanks for all the work you've all put into this, took a while to get through the thread but damn.
