if he sets the boot disk in System Settings, he can boot with whatever he wants.

his mac is restarting cause it is kernel panicing when OSX can't recognize the card.

if you set boot disk before you boot you don't need the grey bootloader screen and thus totally avoid OSX

Hmm. Negative.

If I make sure that the boot partition is xp ,shut down the xp,install the card, restart = The machine goes into the chime loop. After removing the card,it restarts back to windows.

Building up now the bootcd, hopefully that works or i have very effectively bricked the card.

Well,that´s it. That´s all.
I am done.

Cindori,I am afraid Pressure was right.
Cant boot to xp with the ati card inside.
As I wrote before,as soon as the card is in,the boot chime comes. And then it goes...

Tried with the magicISOs boot disk but the same thing.
Power goes on,3seconds of things powering up (including the card),the Chime and game over. No time to boot disk to kick in and no way to get into dos.
As I dont have a pc, it´s about time to crack a beer and surf to the apple store to buy a apple4870.

Gracias gentlemen!
Hopefully somebody learned something? At least I did...
:D

you should try slot 1 with 7300 and 4890 in slot 2

slot 1 is default graphic card slot, not good idea to boot with a broken card in that slot

Tried that. Fail.
But a bit less fail! Now it didnt get stuck in the chime loop..well kind off..

Only one chime, hdd revs up but after that, nothing else but a red light behind the memorychassis.
When trying to boot into xp or osx doesnt make any difference,as chime is in the beginning. And no success with the bootcd either.

When booting without the 7300 you get only half of a chime, but with the same results otherwise.
A lot of fail here...heh..

im guessing it's the light titled "PCI"

I must say it is VERY wierd you can't boot Windows / dos disk with a working card in slot 1.

i have one last suggestion

try without any power connected to 4890

4890 is too, if you follow the instructions ;)

Heh..

Well, the instructions are ok I guess,if you are seasoned pro. But for us amateurs, they leave a bit to desire for.
They (alec boeglins) lack the info where to put the files, the error messages are "a bit" vague" at the best etc.
And I knew I was pushing my luck by getting the non-standard ASUS instead of the saphire. So I got what I deserved!
Cindori, you could do a even more detailed writeup off the installation if you have the energy.I know that you (and everyone else!) have done their fair share allreay, but it could cut down the dumb questions and errors us laymen do.At the present state they are a bit like VCR instructions... :D

But thanks again for all the help and stuff.
Peace!

Ahh Cindori!
You are so nice !
:)
Always good to have a user friendly geek!

Its been a while i have not been around since i fried my third Sapphire 4890, the shop would not take it the third time, until Sapphire recognized there was a problem with all the cards they provided to this reseller.
So i got a brand new 1gb 4890 from them, free of course- the fourth one- I hope the last! Have not tried it yet, im still a bit nervous from previous experiences. will install as soon as I migrate to SL, until then... Thanx to all for the support.

ah well... I still wanted to make this a little bit more user friendly

macinposh showed that the instructions where bad enough for a newcomer.
terminal commands?? rom files?? not too easy if it's your first time
and I cant have ppl brick their cards on my instructions...

so I decided to make this.

This is an application that does all the work for you.
Really.

You download the app, double click, enter password, wait 20 sec, restart computer, and it's done.

It's written in AppleScript. It's really basic, but until about 4 hours ago, I had never written a line of AppleScript before. But all it took was some intense googling and help from StefanK @ Macscripter.net.

Off to update the main post.

finally updated main post.

oh and for the new flashing app, it would be appreciated if someone could try it out

I tried it on my mac pro with both a 10.6.1 disk and a 10.5.8 disk, so it seems pretty solid

im off to bed...

Not working

I'm getting the message:

/ATIROMFlasher.kext failed to load - (libkern/kext)
not found; check the system/kernel logs for errors or
try kextutil(8).

Hope you can help me

Thanx

Is there a list of Cards that work?

Great thread, lots of info, BUT.

People talk about cards but don't put in model numbers.

So, someone says XFX 4890, but don't say which one. There are 10 4890s from XFX.

i assume this can be used for flashing 4870s too?

think i'm gonna go with one of those so i don't have to worry about QE_CI package updates years in the future.

Any chance you can make on of these "idiot-proof" things with the OC ROM? :)

Are you running it when logged in as a administrator?
also, did you copy the files to the drive your OS is on?
