The Mac Pro Motherboard>PCI 6pin cables are unique and you wont find them in a computer store.

You can either use them or use the molex in the optical bay.

There are cables to convert 6pin PCI to the 4pin PCI that will fit your asus.

Cheers mate for all the help and patience.Appreciated.

I have the "cabling" "kind of" "sorted"...
It just is so ghetto that I really dont know to cry or to laugh.

I mean....

It looks a bit dodgy..

Yeah the Molex way will look abit ghetto. Looks like you got the cables sorted out allright.

does the asus card work?

does the asus card work?

Still problems doing the sudo dance. First it asks password (wich it doesnt accept) and after that it says that unknown command/file not found etc..

Lets see..

The reason this card requires two 6-pin power connectors is because a single 6-pin connector is rated for a certain amount of Amps. You are pulling all the Amps from a single 12V connector now and that may cause problems.

The 6-pin Molex connectors are not unique but actually a standard Molex part you can order.

Aaargh!

After removing weird shims on the card, doing trickery etc, I am now
stuck in the terminal.

I figured (maybe..) that I have to move the facelessflash and romflasher
to Users/Juggernaut (my computer)? At least then i got that far..
the instructions are a bit vague for a layman like me...
Then I got a bit further untill the no-directory thing hits the fan.

Booting with asus is futile and in the about this mac it shows that pci-e has a x16 unit there, recognizes ati
:(ATI 0x1002)
Device ID : 0x9460
Revision ID : 0x0000
But "No Kext Loaded"

Hmm?
Where should I put the facelessflash and romflasher files to make the terminal capiche?

Edit: The card is up and humming in slot 1 and 7300 in slot 3, I can get pic in the maindisplay but nothing out from the asus.

the terminal starts in your User folder, from there you can either move your way to your files or just do it like me, move the files to your user folder instead

also, you are writing "4870.rom", remember that guide from that blog is for the 4870, not 4890. you should replace this with your rom name (4890 or 4890oc)

Oh boy...

As written :

I tried to write the "sudo rm ATIFacelessFlash.app/Contents/Resources/*IMG"

but it gave "rm: ATIFacelessFlash.app/Contents/Resources/*IMG: No such file or directory"

I (still) wrote after that the "sudo cp 4890.ROM ATIFacelessFlash.app/Contents/Resources/"

wich went fine and continued to the

"sudo kextload ATIROMFlasher.kext"
"sudo open ATIFacelessFlash.app"
"sudo kextunload ATIROMFlasher.kext"
wich allso went fine.

Then I restarted.
Then it got stuck in the neverending boot chime...

Uuhh...

Any guesses?
Is the powerdraw too big that it cant restart? All power comes from the ODD bay. 5 drives total (4 in raid10 : bays2,3 and 5) bay1 a backup disk.

By the way,is it supposed to be *IMG in the one part or are you supposed to put something else there?

Nope. Booted of just one disk in bay one, and still chime-es-travaganza.

Card off,and 7300 in and all is dandy.
I think I am doing something wrong in the "sudo rm ATIFacelessFlash.app/Contents/Resources/*IMG" part?

ok since you are having problems;

take my already prepared files

http://groths.se/FlashPrep.zip

unzip and move files to your user folder

then run the flashing commands:

"sudo kextload ATIROMFlasher.kext" (loads the interface to the card), "sudo open ATIFacelessFlash.app" (flashes the card. The app should appear in your Dock, wait for it to complete), "sudo kextunload ATIROMFlasher.kext" (unloads the interface).

Nope.

Nothing.
The when I insert the card, the machine is now in a constant chime loop.
wtf?

Did I manage to bork the card or could I backtrack to the original settings?
Something is awry here..

If I would start to clean up the system, any suggestion peeps?

EDIT : Anyone, would it worth to try to start from an external power supply? Dumb idea or a totally dumb idea?
Just to be sure if I bricked the goddamn card...

Insert the card into a PC with BIOS and flash it from DOS.

Damn,I dont have a pc..
Should I install bootcamp and xp?

Or cindori (I owe you a pint or two...) what do you mean bootcd+usb stick?
Any pointers where to do some reading?

And is there any way to clean my computer so that it removes all the drivers and stuff? I mean,to get back to the starter?
I noticed the last time around that after re-installing the ATIFacelessFlash (it didnt show the .app ending in the folder view) it finally accepted the ""sudo rm ATIFacelessFlash.app/Contents/Resources/*IMG" command without saying that file not found. But at that time the card was allready borked..

And sorry guys about all this drama.
Embarising...

It will not work in a Mac Pro.

You have to do it in a PC.

There are no drivers or something like that.
Those ATI apps are firmware upgrades for the iMac. Think of them like a box. You open the box, remove the iMac firmware, put your 4890 firmware there, close the box. Then run the app...

Ok. But it still baffles me,after removing the programs,I should have been able to reset to the beginning where I could have the 4890 inside with my7300,humming silently, showing up with "no kext" and displaying no pic?

Now,no matter what I try, when I insert the 4890,with or without 7300 the computer just keeps chiming repeatedly and does not proceed.

I am dumbfounded.

cant boot dos on a mp? lol, just download bootcd and put on usb drive, i done it myself...

it's all covered in this guide

http://web.me.com/jacobcroft/4870Flash/4870Flash.html

The problem is that the Mac Pro will not boot with the flashed Radeon HD 4870 in it. That's why he is getting the continuous chimming problem.

That's why you have to do it on a PC. Yes, the Mac Pro can boot to DOS but not with a card that have been flashed wrongly.

if he sets the boot disk in System Settings, he can boot with whatever he wants.

his mac is restarting cause it is kernel panicing when OSX can't recognize the card.

if you set boot disk before you boot you don't need the grey bootloader screen and thus totally avoid OSX

the programs do nothing, they are tools. the only thing you are modifying at all is the ROM on your graphic card, it does nothing for your computer or operative system.

the fact that you failed in the first steps but still continued to the flashing process leads me to believe you flashed with the iMac firmware still inside...

now you have to do the DOS process which is carefully described in the link I posted. And you need windows, either on PC or on bootcamp. this is in order to prepare your image.

will do after a good nights sleep.

In that case I stand corrected :)

Hope it works out for him.
