Hey mate,

So that means if i order apple led display it will work.

Thats Great!

Yeap mate it should (i didn't test with apple led display because i don't have one, but the DP port is enabled as it is in 4870 from Apple). If i were you i"ll test it before.

What else ? Nespresso ? :D

Summary

Sapphire Radeon HD 4890 New Edition

P/N 288-1E115-D20SA SKU# 11150-11

with following ports:

1 Dual-link DVI
1 HDMI
1 DisplayPort

Using OS X 10.6.2 works with:

1 Dual-link DVI
1 Single-link DVI (adaptor DP / DVI)

Using BootCamp (3) and XP SP3 works with:

1 Dual-link DVI
1 Single-link DVI (adaptor HDMI / DVI)*
1 Single-link DVI (adaptor DP / DVI)*

and Apple bluetooth Mighty Mouse

*I didn't try both at the same time, one by one.

Enjoy :D

Don't you have a friend already equipped with this kind of display ?

Yeah but, it is less painful to return it back to my apple guy if it does not work
(which i hope will not be the case) than to do all borrowing stuff. I’m lazy for that. :D

IMHO if DVI out of DP works that means that DP works, you shouldn't take too many risks in buying it, anyway as you said you have to return it within 14 days.

Wishing you that it will be faster than Magic Mouse... i did understand what's magic in this mouse, she knows how to disappear completely :D

Hi Cindori,

You should copy the first 65536 o from beginning of the original rom and paste them completely to replace the existing natit bin image.

in 0xED, none of the columns of data look like the data in bin image?

You're welcome.

Just as a reminder, to flash your card with atiflash you must use DOS on a PC, and not DOS under XP or bootcamp, you have to boot on a DOS floppy disk on a PC.

You can make a bootable floppy disk with (on a PC)

http://jphdupre.chez-alice.fr/win_xp/ntfs/DKT_boot98_NTFS.exe

and use atiflash

Just asking, isn't there a way to boot to dos in my MacPro? I tell something that I came across; back when Seagate sent bad firmwares for there 1TB barracudas, they had a boot CD that allowed the MacPro to boot under DOS to flash the firmware of the Hard drive to a newer version. Has anyone tried using a boot CD to get the MacPro into DOS?

The way I had the Mac boot into the CD is holding Option key on the keyboard (gotta use a wired keyboard) to the selection screen comes up and selecting the CD to boot.

XFX HD-489X-ZSFR V1.6 Success

After spending months wanting to replace my old nvidia 7300 in my first gen mac pro with the methods posted here, the old card finally died. Luckily, I had VNC running on the machine and was able to do all of my modifications at first using my Ubuntu "craptop".

The card I'm using is the XFX HD-489X-ZSFR.
To get up and running quickly, I didnt worry about flashing the card, I just used Cindori's tool to add the injector and QE_CI kext mods. Worked great!
Thank you Cindori.

Now, for the fun stuff...
I updated to 10.6.2 and hosed my sweet video setup.
After several hours of trial and error, I finally got around to dumping the ROM and flashing the card with the XFX ZDF7 Modified ROM. The boot screen would show then immediately grey screen. So, I removed the video card. Let the machined boot in "headless" mode. Made a vnc connection back into the box, applied the 10.6.2 combo update. Just before reboot, I reinstalled the injector and the QE_CI 10.6.2 exotic package from netkas. After reboot, it looked like all was well. I removed the natit injector and rebooted. Just after the boot loader I got an immediate GSOD. As of right now, I'm having to run the modded rom AND the natit injector. All seems to be ok except the fan speed. I think it is actually running dangerously low, the heatsink and ambient temp in the case is pretty hot. I'm going to attempt to do some rom modding on my own to get that fan speed up quite a bit if possible. I'll be trolling the forums for tips on modding the fan stuff but any advice is appreciated. I do have a Windows 7 partition now so I will be playing around with the ATI goodies there.

Also, uploading my original ROM :)

Peloche, that works like a charm. Cooling profile "sounds" normal and feels normal. Thanks man.

To Rominator, Cindori, and Netkas thank you guys a ton for spawning the ultimate thread and your support.

IMHO if DVI out of DP works that means that DP works,

I would not be 100% certain of this.

The DVI portion of DisplayPort is a backwards compatible piece...pure DVI.

Displayport uses a completely different timing method.

The DVI is simply "passed through" much like the analog VGA is through a DVI port, a totally separate entity.

These were things I discovered while making eyefinity work on 5870.

The sort of adapter that Peloche is using is called "passive" as it does not modify signal at all.

Here is a cheap one in US:

http://www.monoprice.com/products/p...=10428&cs_id=1042801&p_id=4827&seq=1&format=2

And here is their explanation of what I am trying to say....near bottom of page:

"Note: This is a passive adapter. While DisplayPort connectors are capable of passing a DVI signal, DisplayPort and DVI signals are basically different and not compatible with each other. This adapter does not actively convert a DisplayPort signal into a DVI signal. In order for this adapter to function properly, you must have a DisplayPort source device capable of producing and passing out a DVI signal through the DisplayPort jack. "

I do understand what you say and what they explain.

ATI knows that DP is very recent and that people will need mainly, at the time being, two DVI instead of 1 DVI and 1 DP, so by concept they have secured backward compatibility with DVI on DP port.

I get the DVI through DP with the adaptor for sure, but that means that DP part of GPU is enabled and treated by Apple's EFI and/or driver, and of course including DVI compatibility.

DP port of Apple's 4870 original GPU doesn't include DVI backward compatibility ? Yes it should, since IMHO it's made like this for DP within the GPU by itself.

DVI being older it can't be forward compatible :D, it's why there isn't any DVI/DP passive adaptor available on the market, and if you want to use DVI port as a DP port you need a signal converter that is very expensive.

In fact i didn't say 100% :D, but "you shouldn't take too many risks in buying it", but risk exists.

All righty, I've read through the bulk of this thread, tried to roll my own rom and natit, flashed with a few different rom's, nothing has worked. Right now I'm stuck at the "rolling chime constant rebooting" state but I do have a PC with another videocard to flash with, so I'm adamant on finding a ROM that will work for this card. I bought this powercolor card: http://ncix.com/products/?sku=41845&vpn=AX4890 1GBD5&manufacture=PowerColor. it has hynix ram.
I opened up the original bios in 0xED and it starts with 55 AA 7E. So I have no idea what to do with it. If someone could make me a new BIOS, or point me towards one that has a chance of working, I would love them forever, and make an addition to their tip jar :) some fantastic work being done in this thread! here's the original. md5 is e00fc5828ec4412e5304e99784252272.

Confirmed Sapphire Vapor-X working.

Ok thanks, here attached your customized EFIROM

md5
b0657576c6c9e05e0c4c9e37b4319b60

Good luck,

First off, thank you for the rom, I honestly appreciate it. =)

Second, I would like to go ahead and say that flashing this Vapor-X was one hell of an adventure, one that came out working. =)

I wasn't able to re-flash the Vapor-X using my Mac, It kept on getting a kernel panic when it booted up.

So I had to fork out $160 for a PC Motherboard and CPU to install in my friends computer. Everyone that I knew only had AGP ports and not a single one had a PCIe port for me to install the video card in. After about an hour worth of frustrations and crossing fingers i was able to get the Vapor-X back to its original rom, and tested it with Bootcamp that it worked as before. Then I proceeded to flash it with the custom rom from Peloche (Thank you again!)

I hoped for the best and booted my Mac with just the Vapor-X, after some flickering upon boot, the Mac booted up just fine with the custom rom that was installed on the Vapor-X.

There are currently not many issues I'm having with it, but this is the results so far.

Common Issues: Screen flickering upon grey/Apple logo boot & sometimes the Power cable not connected correctly message, even tho I have the cables correctly installed.

Side Issues or known problems: VGA, & HDMI don't work, even with the supplied HDMI to DVI adapter that came with the Vapor-X didn't work. The screen would refresh like a display 'was' connected to it, but it didn't show a second screen. As far as the Display Port goes, I don't have a monitor that could connect to it nor do I have any adapters for it. I would 'Assume' that its working since Apple supports the Display Port.

Other than that, everything seems to be working fine, Once again, Thank you to Peloche, & Cindori. Ya'll guys rock!

Yeap i've got the same with Sapphire New Edition, not yet found the reason but it's just a mouse click to complete.

Side Issues or known problems: VGA, & HDMI don't work, even with the supplied HDMI to DVI adapter that came with the Vapor-X didn't work. HDMI can't work since we are using EFI/driver from Apple's 4870 original card that is equipped with 1 DVI port and 1 DP port, so EFI/driver do not treat the HDMI port.
I tested DP port with DP/DVI adapter on Sapphire New Edition, it's fine but we wait that mfka open his wallet :D to acquire an Apple Led Display with DP connection to be sure.

Thanks for your report.
