Thanks too all your hard work and information I successfully installed an ATI Sapphire Radion HD 4890 card using your original method. I did not have a second card but was able to complete the process via a second computer and enabling screen sharing. All seem to be working perfectly.

The only thing I noticed is that straight away the computer launches with the grey boot screen and apple logo something i had not expected from reading your thread.

I am running Snow Leopard and the update to 10.6.2 is now available. I am not sure what to do. Have spent some time on the netkas site they have lots more info than I really want. A lot of stuff I know very little or nothing about about.

Also seems that 4890 users need to wait for patched x2000.kext. In your own thread the QE_CI Pkg for 10.6.2 has been mentioned.

Is there, or will there be a simple upgrade process or am I better off just re flashing my card with your new flashing app

i'll whip together a 10.6.2 QE_CI later today and put it inside ATI Flashing Tool

Hi Cindori,

is this like just adding a line of text to a kext file?
I'm in the process of deciding whether to get a 4870 (just works) or a 4890 (a bit of hacking after every system update). I'd choose the 4890 if I could do the editing myself.
I think I'm tech-savvy enough to make it. ;)

I'm still quite new to this and I was able to find a Sapphire 4890 however this one is Over clocked at 870Mhz which I hear 850Mhz is 'ok' but more hz could cause some problems.

One thing I do need to ask and since this was brought up just now; by flashing the card, there will be no Quartz Extreme by default correct? You would have to install a patch thats in this forum, or have to wait for a 10.6.2 patch, correct?

I'm not necessarily using this card for video games, but mostly video editing, gaming on the card will just be a plus. =)

clock does not matter

clock is stored in ROM and when you flash you overwrite the old ROM..

the clocks on the Apple-modified Sapphire roms we have are anything from 850 to 950

I suggest you download my app from my sig

it has alot of newbie friendly information. you can read about qe_ci if you choose it from the menu.

You have everything you need in Cindori’s ATI Flash tool, including quartz 10.6.2.
Everything is as easy as clicking the mouse thanks to Cindori.

Thank you. I'm anxious to give this a try now that I got the right type of card in my sights. =D

I just used Cindori's QE_CI Pkg and I am having problems. Only one of my screens works now even though both are plugged into different graphic cards.

Also, on start up I'm getting very weird distortions. My GPU's fan is spinning like crazy too. I should have waited awhile before I went through with this update.

Can someone explain why none of my other DVI ports are working on both my cards? Only one DVI on my 4890 is working, and the 4870's aren't working at all.

I left both the Apple 4870 and the flashed 4890 in when I installed the new QE. Did I F&*9 up the card by doing that?

Is there some way where I can downgrade back to 10.6.1?

I dont plan on using my ATI x1900 XT, I'm already starting to have some issues with it, plus Its not gonna help me out when Open CL starts coming into play, So I'll just be using the 4890 when I get it later on today.

And i also like to know is there any update news off the Sappire Hd4890 Vapor-x 2GB?
Does it work or now?

Just reporting that I have the exact same card but flashed with the ati tool found on here. Worked a treat, was lazy and used the included xfx rom :p

Got my HIS 4890 today, I can't use it yet because I don't have the right cords but once I do I'll report back with my success/failure.

Just reporting in on the 10.6.2 update. Downloaded the combo updater and netkas' new QE/CI patch for 10.6.2. After installing the OS update I installed the QE/CI patch before restarting. Restarting took the usual longer time due to OS updates triggering the fsck command at boot. Started up normally with no hiccups or distortions during the Apple logo screen nor desktop loading. Everything is functioning just as before with both Quartz Extreme and Core Image verified to be working. All in all a hum drum affair.

Redneck download the 10.6.2 combo updater and try installing again. I stopped trusting the SU method a while back because it sometimes would screw up while the combo update will catch everything. Once installed and it's telling you to restart use the QE/CI patch located here to regain functionality and then restart.

Thanks Treksdot, you've solved my problem. Worked like a charm and things are back to the way there were.

Couple of things I've noticed:
- I still have the weird screen flickering/tearing when running down monitors off the 4890 in OS X.
- After my initial 10.6.2 update where I lost use of all my DVI ports but one (the single DVI on the 4890) I noticed that I didn't have any video DRM protection issues for once when watching a movie on the screen attached to the 4890.

OKAY, I finally got my Sapphire 4890, Following the directions on ATI flashing Tool, I opened up the ATI app, and Installed the Natit injector. After that was completed. I continued on the instructions to turn off my MacPro, and remove my x1900 and install the 4890 alone, I have the right type of ATI power cables installed.

I powered up and all I got was a black screen, I continued to wait, and soon enough it rebooted again by it self, and then again until it stopped with a red diagnostic LED.

I Powered off the mac and installed just the 1900 by it self and the mac booted up.

I also tried having both cards in there (with proper power of course) and still I get the endless rebooting.

Did I do something wrong here?

this is the card i got Sapphire Vapor-X 4890

I'll try re-injecting the Natit, and see if It just didnt take. I'm also running 10.6.2

there are rom making instructions somewhere between 10 pages back in this thread.

can you link to the exact card you bought?

peloche, when replacing ATY bin image, what adress span should I look for? to copy from rom.

Hi Cindori,

You should copy the first 65536 o from beginning of the original rom and paste them completely to replace the existing natit bin image.

So I just got my Sapphire 4890 new edition from Newegg today and am looking to install it and flash it etc. I have NOT yet updated to 10.6.2 so I was wondering if I should do that first BEFORE doing the ROM flash procedure or if I should stay with 10.6.1 and worry about updating later.
