Actually, in my case it might be software-related. The whole screen does not seem to react except for the Control Center - pulling the Control Center works even though the app on the screen does not react at all.

But if / when it gets fixed is another story...
The problem never occurs in any fashion while I’m using my Apple Pencil. Go figure!
[doublepost=1549549191][/doublepost]
I disagree. My gen3 12.9 iPad Pro worked flawlessly for the first couple of months, meaning, the hardware functioned perfectly. That couldn’t occur if the hardware was flawed right of the box (in which case it would have been immediately returned it). I was quite happy. No heating up, no drops onto the floor, in fact I never felt the hardware was strained at all.

Then, out of nowhere, perhaps after an iOS Update, screen freezing slowly crept in and is now an issue. For me, perhaps luckily, leaving the Pencil attached has cured the problem. I’m going to keep mine, since it’s quite usable now, and await an answer, hopefully it’s a software update fix, but, perhaps not.
That’s what I experienced also.

When you guys say this do you mean you keep the Apple Pencil in range with enough power to stay connected but still use your fingers? Or that you use the Apple Pencil instead of your finger(s)? Or that you keep the thing dangling out of the lightning port chrageing?
In my case, leaving the pencil magnetically attached while using my finger helps but, doesn’t completely eliminate the problem.
[doublepost=1549549597][/doublepost]
My 2nd gen 12.9 is doing the same.
Sometimes the touchscreen become unresponsive for a few seconds......
The problem is that if I go to a Genius bar, it's very difficult to replicate it. My iPad is still under warranty, but I doubt they will trade it if the problem appears whenever it wants
People have reported here that exchanging their iPad doesn’t fix it. It re-emerges on the replacement iPad. There seemingly is no cure.

I think anyone with a newer iPad that is experiencing this problem should not expect for it to be cured by exchanging it for a new one, well, not yet anyway.

I'm believe this is a hardware issue!

I didn't have this unresponsive problem on my new 3rd gen 12.9 for the first month. Then it appeared and got worse over the course of a few weeks. Apple gave me a replacement. I immediately installed the iCloud backup from my unresponsive iPad onto the replacement. Since doing so, I haven't experienced this issue.

If it were software, wouldn't the same software installed on the new iPad manifest the same unresponsive problems? Now, maybe (in time) the problem will appear on the new iPad. If so, I'd then suspect it to be a hardware issue due to the flexibility of the device, or perhaps constant finger use on the screen.

Interesting...I see something of a non responsive screen (12.9 Pro) sometimes but I'm not sure if it is just the app, safari bug, dry fingers because of the wintertime....*shrugs

It’s definitely perplexing. A software problem would mean a new iPad running that software (iOS) should have the problem. A hardware problem would mean a new iPad should have the problem right out of the box.

Weird that initially all is functioning perfectly then the problem slowly creeps in.

Weird that leaving the (my) Pencil attached cures the problem.

Weird that while using the (my) Pencil there are no problems at all.

Weird.

Any place but here or there....
^ Hardware problem not always right out of the box. Mine started to develop these symptoms about 6 weeks in after an area of the iPad Pro got very hot several times during drawing sessions.

Sometimes though, that does happen out of the box as was the case for the 10.5 I returned two days after purchase for all of the issues I had with the 12.9 and more.

Apple has had time to address this and they haven’t, so I’ll use older iPad designs that work with the pencil. Picked up another 6th gen iPad yesterday.

This bug is in the 2017 and 2018 iPad pros. It makes pubg and fortnite unplayable. Its a physical issue with heat and battery wear and I'm sure apple is well aware of it. This is why turning down settings seems to help because it reduces heat. These devices are too thin to work correctly.

that is pretty much the same when you reset the ipad and start it as a new... works few weeks fine then becomes slowly unresponsive, at first once a day, then few times a day and finally it lags so badly that you want to throw it against the wall.

Have the 11 inch iPad Pro since day 1 and the touchscreen became unresponsive out of nowhere. Tried all the tricks listed in this post and nothing fixed it. Made an appt at the genius bar, explained the issue and they replaced the device under warranty. Been a few days now and everything seems fine. Like others have reported, my iPad was fine when I first got it. Was only after about 45 days the problem started to occur. So IMO it's a hardware issue.

Hello all, after the last two updates my ipad pro 12.9’ 2nd gen has issues with not responsive screen often. I need to exit the application or click the home button multiple times or lock the screen and all goes well after. Did a factory reset but nothing helped. Anyone else with the same issue? I hope it is software
I BELAVE I have the same iPad issue as you also we have the same iPad Pro 12.9 2nd gen too

I have this same issue with my 10.5. What ALWAYS seems to fix it (temporarily) is to completely clean the screen with a microfiber cloth. My theory is that the new high-refresh-rate screen introduced on the second gen 12.9 and the 10.5 is more sensitive to touch than previous iPad screens, and therefore begins to sense dirt and grime on the screen even when the screen is only slightly smudged. It senses this dirt/grime as if there are other fingers touching the screen, which causes the screen to sometimes become unresponsive or become jumpy instead of having normal smooth movements.

This would also explain why the Apple Pencil always works fine, which is that it has palm rejection, thus rejecting the dirt/grime which otherwise would cause the issue.

Typically if I exit the app and go right back in (no need to even force quit the app), that will do the trick. I think that causes the touch screen to reset itself. Eventually if I don’t clean my iPad screen for a few days, it will happen more and more often, and will seem as if the screen is very glitchy. However, cleaning the screen once again restores its function to like-new again, at least for a few hours of use until the problem resurfaces.

I’ve considered getting a tempered glass screen protector with an oleophobic coating as a possible fix. Has anyone who has this issue tried using a screen protector? In theory, that could solve the issue (if my theory is correct).

I have the same problem as you described on my 10.5 and I do use a glass screen protector. As you say, I exit the app and go right back in the problem disappears for awhile.

I had a 12.9 2nd gen pro it had the screen issue along with light bleed from the edge. It was out of warranty. I took it in I got normal trade in plus extra on 3rd gen one. Hoping this is over.

Trade-in is like buying a new iPad :( It was the first thing they suggested me. I would have paid ~$900 or something like that (for Apple's manufacturing problem, even not mine) in the end. No way.

It was getting a new iPad. I was offered a refurb no charge or 600 for a new one. I use it extensively in my business everyday. So it was my choice, definitely not optimal but necessary being I don't want another of the same design and have the same problem again. I did not have AppleCare.

Well, unfortunately, it's happening on 3rd gen pros, as well. Good luck.

It’s a crap shoot for sure and I did get AppleCare on this one. I will raise some hell if the new one has any issue whatsoever. For the LTE model I had I was given fair resale value. It was not their first offer, it was my counter offer. They take these cases as they come and it should not be that way.

Bought 12.9/2 on 2018.01, have been experiencing this [censored] since mid-2018.06 (just after 11.4 has arrived; I think that the problem is haunting me after the unsuspecting "update ios" tap, I've had 11.3 before). Opened an Apple Support Case, had my iPad diagnosed remotely (along with that strange "turn bluetooth on"), no issues were found. Have been directed to service center (the email says "we're always ready to help", lol). Have been denied RMA because a minor 3mm scratch has been found on the screen (have $30 ready for the super-sophisticated diagnostics).

We've all read about the symptoms: some parts of (or entire) screen become unresponsive to taps when it's "not in the mood" (unable to match the glitches with any internal/external conditions like running some apps, changing settings, connecting charger, etc); sometimes you hold the item keeping your finger pressed against the screen, yet iPad (hence the app) reacts as the finger was momentarily lifted and placed on screen surface again; sometimes you drag something (scroll the map, for example) and iPad starts to pinch/zoom the picture, like a second finger was placed on the screen. All kinds of [erratic behaviour], you know the score.

Having all that, Apple Pencil works 100% flawless, not a single glitch can be experienced. Like for all of us, afaik.

nb: suprisingly decent free app to test this kind of problems (when the touchscreen suddenly loses the finger): "Test Device Multitouch" by "Ferret King Co.,Ltd." - https://itunes.apple.com/ru/app/test-device-multitouch/id1143529785?mt=8

I was ready to resort to selling my iPad for (I hope) 30% of the original price any buying the new one (3rd gen), but what do I see? People complaining of the same [censored] that's bugging the new 2018/3rd-gen iPads. I was hoping that (buying the 12.9/3) I could lose some money but gain a peace of mind (life's short, after all) but now I'm in complete despair. I do not know of other 12.9 alternatives. I can't imagine my life with a screen that's even 1" smaller (wife has 10.5" iPad, can't look at this teeny-weeny).

Divine entity, help us all. This looks like a complete Apple's fault to provide decent hardware+software solution that Apple's been traditionally proud of (I've been a loyal customer for 10+ years). That's a rant, I know, but still...

(anyone else notice this forum makes text editing difficult? Like I tried to select all and then drag to deselect all but the last paragraph on my 12.9" iPad and it doesn't work, so now I'm replying to the entire post. Ironic.)

I think Apple needs to stop working on smaller and thinner and stick with a form factor that allows thick enough metal to provide structural support/strength.

The problem is:
  1. Jony Ives is obsessed with the idea of the entire device being just a single sheet of glass.
  2. The increased thickness means more metal. Even minute increases is a significant cost increase when manufacturing millions of devices (this, btw, is Tim's obsession).

When did the electronic home button appear on the 3rd gen 12.9? I saw it last night. Makes it easier when the screen becomes unresponsive but doesn't fix the problem.

Figured it out. Has to do with Assistive Touch under general.

I’m experiencing erratic touch response on ipad pro 12.9 2018. Initiallynal was well, but it started a month or two ago In my case it goes like this: sometimes scrolling in apps get unreaponsive, sometimes I have to retry to scroll several times untill it works. Sometimes I’m loosing seceral first characters typed on onscreen keyboard. Today I"ve noticed that this issue starts showing up after app is brought from background. See attached film, where safari geta unreaponsive when brought from background. You can see as it ignores my swipe first, then starts interpretting as text selection (what?!?). I was able to reproduce 100%, also in other apps like mail. But then I’ve restarted and the issue is gone. But I know it will go back because it always comes back. Hopefuly, in case of this model, it is software issue. Because it seems so.

Very similar to what happens to me. Here’s a video I sent to SnazzyLabs. He’s a legend and doesn’t mind telling Apple what he thinks. He promised to look into it. I’m having so many more problems this morning. I really am so frustrated and upset. I sold one of my laptops because this is meant to replace it. I don’t want to have to visit the store all the time. When will they acknowledge it?

Same Story for me :(

  • Bought iPad Pro 12.9 Cellular in Sept. 2017 (2nd Generation)
  • Issue that Touch Screen is not responding occured first time in Jan 2018
  • This iPad was replaced in March 2018 at the Genius Bar. It was not possible to show / reproduce the issue - but iPad was replaced without ans further discussions
  • This new iPad works really well for round about 3-4months... then the issue occured again
  • iPad gets replaced another time in Sept. 2018 (via AppleCare)
  • Bought new iPad Pro 12.9 in November 2018 (3rd Generation with FaceID)
  • In Jan 2019 the issue occured the first time on the brand new iPad

I‘m currently try to make a video when the issue occures to get it replaced soon...

But even if i get a new one - i can bet that the issue will show again.

So sad :(
