Started this morning unplugging my IPP (12.9 G2) and within 10-15 minutes sporadic touch failures started. By the end of the first hour failures accounted for almost half of the touches / swipes. This also applies to multi-finger touches.

Plugged in pencil - no change.
Turned off BT - no change.
Plugged in pencil and rebooted - after 45 minutes all is working well.

I am going to leave the pencil in for several hours today (battery willing) and see what occurs.
If someone has a scenario they would like me to try let me know. I will if I can.

Note: my IPP is attached to an ASK. This is my normal mode of using it.

Update: After seven hours I am finding leaving the pencil plugged in helps but it does not fix the issue. I am still getting sporadic instances of touch / swipe failures.

One interesting note; althogh the Pencil is the only BT item active, twice during the last seven hours my iPad asked for permission for the Pencil to connect via BT.

Strange time. :(

No, nope, iOS 12.2 is the same. What "fixed" it probably is the reboot / update procedure. I'm afraid it will come back in few hours / days (mine lasted few hours after update until first re-ocurrence).

2018 iPad Pro 12.9

Had this since ~november 25th. Unresponsive touch screen happens all the time, and goes aways within a few seconds. Often enough to be annoying and something that I would be embarrassed to allow other people to see considering what was spent on it.

This is what I've got connected through bluetooth.

-headphones
-keyboard
-Amazon Echo
-Soundbar
-couple of smart watches
-Windows 10 laptop

Doesn't seem to matter whether the other bluetooth items are connected or not. However, leaving the 2nd generation pencil attached at the magnetic docking spot *seems* to have eliminated this problem.

When I am actively using the pencil (for example in Goodnotes or Apple Notes), no problem.

I really have no idea whats going on and just hope that a software update can fix this.

I’m not holding out hope that this will be fixed as it’s been a problem for years and multiple generations of iPads.

That’s exactly the same with me!

I think all of our issues are because of Bluetooth. Even when we turn Bluetooth off.

OK let me see if I can narrow this further:

Does everyone experiencing this issue have a Pencil?

No. Never had a pencil to go with my IPad Pro 12.9" 2nd gen. I'm on my second iPad as the first was replaced under warranty due to this issue. Now the second one is doing it (roughly three months later).

So I’ve reached out to the following people:

- SnazzyLabs on Twitter - Responded initially that he thinks it’s bizarre and will check it out - haven’t heard back so will follow him up today
- Rene Ritchie - Haven’t heard back
- My Apple Store - it’s as if the mention of MacRumors makes their skin crawl so wouldn’t take a look at the forum posts and took it with a grain of salt
- Juli Clover from here - she said she’d look into it and get back to me - nothing yet
- Ben Lovejoy 9to5Mac - he didn’t deem it important enough, though he’s happy writing crappy articles about his opinion on the Apple event

I’m going to reach out to Juli on Twitter again with this post today because the list of people just keeps growing.

If there is no acknowledgement in the next month from Apple, I will demand that they give me a 13 inch MBP as a replacement. I did what they wanted and replaced my laptop (sold it) with this thing and after 4 months and 2 replacements, the issue is still occurring. Not good enough.

Cool! You're the hero! We may have a chance.
How about The Verge? They wrote about bendgate. Also something like CNET?

Since Sunday the pencil is continously attached to the iPad. Even when i charge my iPad overnight.

Keep using it this way - at the Moment it seems to help. Will report in few days if the issue is back or not

I've got a leatherette folio cover thing for my iPad Pro. there is a pencil holder located near the magnet on the iPad, but when it's in the holder it rarely makes contact with the iPad. I don't like to have the pencil just connected to the magnet as I tend to knock it off all the time; I'm pretty sure that constant drops to the floor don't help.

So I'm looking for another folio cover where the pencil sits securely and is magnetically connected.

But, under 12.2 I haven't had a glitch (fingers crossed).

No glitch for me either on 12.2. I can’t believe it.

This leads me to believe it’s software. Pretty terrible because without actually acknowledging the issue, Apple has wasted so many potentially good hardware machines.

Unfortunately new update didn't fix anything for me. As always with all software settings/updates it looked like it's working for the first 30 minutes of tests. As soon as I started doing something serious all the issues returned back.

I tried to restart and close all apps, nothing helped.

So I have no doubt this will extend for a few more generations in the iPad Pro's, and bleed into the iPad Air (2019). Does anyone know if this happens with the iPad Mini 4? I'd suspect the same results in the new iPad Minis

btw how about pinging Joanna Stern from WSJ?
https://twitter.com/JoannaStern

She brought attention to MacBook 2015/2018/2019 keyboard problems with her hilarious article:
https://www.wsj.com/graphics/apple-still-hasnt-fixed-its-macbook-keyboard-problem/

She's also putting together a class action suit related to MacBook problems she has....oh god I think in the end we need a lawyer who uses unresponsive iPad and shares the same pain with us.

This is at the front of my mind when considering supplementing my 12.9 with a Mini 5. Ironically it just took a minute for me to type that first sentence using the on screen keyboard on my 12.9.

I’m starting to loathe this device. I carry it with me daily and use it for work and general web surfing. When I pass it to others to look at documents or photo albums I’m typically embarrassed when I see them struggle to swipe/scroll on it.

I‘ve used 12.2 throughout the beta and in my experience that‘s when the issue started. At least I don‘t remember having that issue before, though I‘ve only had the iPad since mid January. I couldn’t reproduce the issue, it happened when the device was cold, when it was hot, when it was charging, when it wasn‘t charching, while and after gaming, just on the home screen, when typing, after reboot etc. 12.2 final actually was the worst, so I gave 12.3 beta a try. I know it‘s been only a day since it‘s been out but I haven‘t had a single issue. Hopefully it stays that way!!

Sorry to be the sceptical guy here, but unfortunately I've seen it many times across numerous threads here and in my case as well: every software update seems to get the issue fixed.... for a couple hours. After some time when you start doing your daily tasks the issue gets back again. After you turn your iPad or bring it from cold to warm, or rub it with your glove....nobody knows the cause but it looks like a hardware issue. I've seen/heard it for iOS 11.2, 11.3, 11.4 now 12.1 and 12.2.
I want to believe but this is lasting for more than a year.

I understand your skepticism, I just wanted to share my experience. Haven‘t consciously tried rotating it to see if the issue returns because I only use it in landscape but when I carry it across rooms I unconsciously rotate it and the issue still hasn‘t returned. I‘ll give feedback in about a week again to let you guys know if it has returned.

I have this issue with my ipad pro 10.5 and the only thing that works for me is to press the power button to turn off screen and turn it on again( I mean just the screen not turn off the device); This works every time for me.
Extremely frustrating that an Apple device has such an issue!
No software update or starting after wiping it clean has helped so far. The workaround works everytime though...
Never faced this even once on my iPad mini 4;
Planning to buy iPad mini 5 for the pencil support - but now am thinking if it's a hardware problem linked to Apple pencil....

I had this issue for a little while, I thought it might be lag, but it happened far too often. After the latest update, the problem went away. I have the 3rd gen iPad Pro... I also had the same issue with the 9.7" iPad Pro as well.

I thought it was cause of how I held it while using it, but the Apple Pencil worked find on the screen.

Hope you find an answer to your issue.

Hello all, after the last two updates my ipad pro 12.9’ 2nd gen has issues with not responsive screen often. I need to exit the application or click the home button multiple times or lock the screen and all goes well after. Did a factory reset but nothing helped. Anyone else with the same issue? I hope it is software
