Hi,
I used to have this problem (often but not easy to replicate/provide specific scenarios) in my iPad pro 10.5;
Even in iOS 12.2 the problem didn't go away;
But after some googling on seeing this thread(I had resigned to live with it before that), I switched on the "touch accommodations" option in settings - without changing any of the default sub-options. This seems to have fixed the problem - at least for now. It's been a few days and the problem hasn't recurred. Will report back if this recurs.

Has this already been tried on 12.9 and found not to work?

Yup, improves but does not completely eliminate the issue for me.

I'm on my THIRD ipad pro 12.9 (2nd gen) with touch issues! This one started having the same touch issues last week, about 2 weeks after receiving it.
All of them only lasted a week or 2 before having touch issues.
Apple store in Sydney Australia has been generous in replacing all of them, but there's definitely a design issue with these ipads.
Not happy.

I had no luck with the accessibility settings mentioned a page ago. Have yet to try 12.3 beta out, anyone else had good experience with 12.3 and this issue? Thinking more about it and watching it happen, I am leaning towards it being a issue of the iPad itself hanging up process wise instead of a display problem, but have no real proof. Anecdotally it seems to happen more if I have background things process like app updates or downloads going on. Could be coincidence, without having any real insight into processes who knows.

Uhm....but it never happens on my air 2, which should be more prone to hanging up, due to less RAM and slower processor and SSD...

No way to know without jailbreaking and seeing what is running. There are probably separate services running on pro models for pencil/promotion support that you wouldn't have running on an older model.

Absolutely true, it's not impossible. Actually, everything is possible. It just seems improbable to me.
Other additional elements that make me think "improbable" are:
1) the power on/off button (including double and triple clicks), keyboard keys, bluetooth accessories and the home buttons stay responsive and never get stuck. Basically, every hardware element except for the touch screen stays responsive.
2) there is no touch disease when using the apple pencil.

Right, the physical buttons work, the apps still run (can see in games things still updating), but the touch becomes unresponsive. That service, if it is different than other ipads, could be hanging. I guess I should specify that and not the entire OS is hanging. Just a theory of course like all the other things going on in this thread.

I initially was pretty set on it being a static electricity problem based on timing of complaints around winter and dry weather. But in FL that isn't the case anymore and haven't had any change. So I don't know, just something new to throw out there. I don't know if a 12.2 jailbreak even exists, if it does I might try it just so I can log the processes and see what happens.

I am on my 4th iPad and still see this issue. It is caused by glue. The first 2 were 2nd gen and the next 2 are 3rd gen but all have this defect the same. This is a touchscreen issue is caused by getting too hot. If you are charging at 20% and playing a 3d game it will get very hot and ruin the touch screen. The unresponsiveness can be observed when it is very hot but over time will occur more and more when the device is cool. When it gets really bad you can see light bleed on the edges of the screen where flat cables connect indicating that the glue has become warped. The heat is messing up the glue that holds the screen on and causing the touch screen to fail. You can get this replaced due to the screen defect once the light bleed is visible, but this is long after it becomes very frustrating to use. Otherwise it is up to the apple employee to believe that your touchscreen sometimes stops working and issue the replacement. I will need to get my 5th iPad because my 4th one still has the touchscreen defect and it came bent.

@spacebro,

You literally described my 2nd gen 12" iPad. Touch issues are bad now and as time goes on I'm getting more and more light bleeding. Between this and my Smart Keyboard failing... :(

Sadly I'm well out of warranty.

The problem is extended warranties really shouldn't be needed. I can understand accidental insurance for iPhones, etc. but as I use the iPad at home on the couch it should not have these issues and I shouldn't need an extended warranty on an already expensive device like this.

I've switched to a Windows 2-in-1 as my primary device. It actually works really well. I'll keep my iPad around for watching videos, reading, etc. but I'm pretty much done with Apple products at this point. I'm absolutely okay paying a premium but I really expect a high quality product for the price and I'm not getting that anymore with Apple.

Ended up deciding to install 12.3 beta 2 to try that out for now, apparently palm rejection that was broken in beta 1 is fixed in beta 2. Will update if I notice it return or not over next few days.

So far after 1 full day on 12.3 beta 2 I have not had any issues. Only a day so take it for what it is, but I have been heavily using the ipad trying to get it to occur. Fingers crossed.

My 4th iPad unresponsive touchscreen is getting worse. I'm going to let it get much worse before moving on to my 5th iPad because I feel bad getting unlimited free iPads.

I wish apple exchanged my device but they didn’t. They didn’t even want to watch the video I made to prove that touchscreen glitches. They took it for week to check and said everything works fine.

Unfortuntely a reboot doesnt help.

Also restoring the iPad (with or without Backup) does not solve this issue.

It is my fourth ipad and the issue occurs on each of them. It cannot be that much of bad luck while others using their iPads without any issue.

Maybe i‘m using it wrong...
You are not the only one who has this problem! iPad Pro 10.5 has been this issue for the most people. Apple tech wants to send my iPad to them since it's under the Applcare. I am hoping that they will believe me.

Mine does it too, but it's not the screen, it's the software. When it happens in split screen, one app is frozen, but the other one works fine. Sometimes it's safari, sometimes my youtube app in the other pane. 10-20sec later the frozen app works again.

I’ve been having this issue in my iPad Pro 11 for a month or so. It is sporadic. It got so bad in the last week that I installed the beta 2 of 12.3. I will report later.

Just received a new replacement iPad Pro 10.5 from Apple. It took me two trips to the local Apple Store. First trip they asked me to reset iPad and set it up as new and see if that fixed things. I tried it and it still had unresponsive screen issues. Went back a second time, they replaced it. I could tell the difference immediately. So far, so good.

Issue started to surface after installing iOS 12.2, I am using iPad Pro 11 by the way... it’s so annoying especially when you are in the middle of intense gaming and the touchscreen stop working, and you have to lock and unlock to get it to work again....
