Issue started to surface after installing iOS 12.2, I am using iPad Pro 11 by the way... it’s so annoying especially when you are in the middle of intense gaming and the touchscreen stop working, and you have to lock and unlock to get it to work again....

I share your pain!

P.S. My impression that this problem's connection to updates is accidental. iPad starts to act like that at some point on hardware side no matter if you update it or not unfortunately :( Something breaks inside due to bad manufacturing.

I’ve been appreciating your updates. Is this the longest you’ve gone without the issue? Do you think 12.3 beta 2 has “solved” the problem?

By far the longest. With that said there has been some app specific hiccups. Safari seems to occasionally hang, and it produces the same issue of no touch working in that app, but its specific to that app. I haven't had it happen in any other app so far. Before I was noticing it every single day I used the iPad in almost all apps. Still not sure I'd recommend going to a beta build for the improvement, but if that is your main gripe with iPad it is probably worth the update. Way more enjoyable to use now so far.

I do think they may have altered how touches are detected. Beta 1 broke palm rejection. In beta 2 that is fixed but I've noticed lighter touches/taps/glances that would have registered in the past do not register now. Not sure if they are trying to tweak their input detection to fix this or what. Wished they would give any insight as to what they actually change in their updates, kind of frustrating.

Thanks, that makes sense. Hopefully they sort it out by the public release of 12.3. I ended up getting rid of my 2017 12.9” Pro last year because of the touch issues. Have a 11” Pro coming in today, hoping this issue will be resolved.

I doubt they will admit there is any problem at all with touch until there is a fix. It seriously affects usability and would kill sales it as general knowledge.

Probably, but it also seems like a waste of time to do a beta, but not have a way for people in the beta to validate what you want tested.

You say there are still bugs with touches in Safari. I hope the beta improvement is not due to some kind of a bug where they switched off part of their multitouch detection engine whatever it is and it just temporarily works in the beta.

There was a report on ifixit 6 months ago from the guy who installed 12.0 beta and it temporarily improved his experience. After the official version came out all the problems returned. This is funny, I just checked. There was another guy in 2018 with 12.1 beta that "improved" the issue but after official update - same story.

During the last year with this problem I've seen it all! But I still want to believe.

I've been on 12.3 beta 2 for 3 days now. It's a definite improvement, but graphic/processor intensive apps (such as PUBG) heat up the ipad and still cause some touch issues. Less than before, but the beta hasn't 100% fixed it for me. Also had a few on screen keyboard typing issues where touches were not recognised.

Also: why does turning the ipad off (button) and immediately turning the screen on again, fix the issue temporarily? Wouldn't that indicate a software issue? This is my quick fix now

My theory is that it resets the touchscreen controller. Probably when a problem with touch occurs it happens due to static electricity so controller detects real touches as "accidental" or "wrong" and ignores them in bulk. When you turn it off and on then these event detection procedures are reset, touch screen gets re-scanned and now it's ready to detect new touches from scratch.

This is just a theory, I may be wrong. But my argument for the hardware cause is that when you first get your iPad there are no problems at all. They get developed with time and even if you factory reset our iPad they don't go away. Software can't get broken with time, at least you're always able to reset it. Only hardware can.

Any place but here or there....
I’ll eventually try something else, probably an Air.

Safari is a mess.

I am beginning to wonder if there are issues in Procreate, but when touch / pencil output stops working it was in different spots on each iPad that had issues for me.

I do know when the iPads I had heated up problems started. I think it’s a combination of software and hardware. With Apple trying to right some of their serious hardware wrongs of the past three years, I hope they work on this.

All I want is an iPad I can draw on using split screen between Procreate and Photos. Downloaded music playing at the same time would be an added bonus.

At least I know to film my issues now.

i think it has become better (for me). i dont remember when was the last time i had this issue... thank god! so i quess it must be a software issue and something in a code is causing it. nothing has changed - not the hardware (the tablet or the pencil) nor apps - of course i have installed updates for apps/ios.

2nd gen ipad pro 12.9

12.3 beta 2 and the issue is still apparent. On some days I have more problems scrolling, on some more keyboard misses when typing. It’s really unreliable...

It’s a miracle! Never seen anything fixed easy like that living myself more than a year with this problem. I envy you.

I’m wondering - do any of you have pets that may get fur on your screen? It seems to happen after my cocker spaniel hops unto my lap. Also happens other times, but this seems to be one of the triggers for me.

Nope screen is clean, lightning port clean, no pets. My Smart Keyboard is giving me trouble too now. Really starting to hate this iPad and I’m not willing to gamble on another iPad purchase. Not sure what to do given that I rely on my iPad Pro in my workflow to take handwritten notes and annotate engineering drawings that I review.

Golden lab more than occasionally licks the screen. I’ve got a leatherette folio which one of my cats scratched to sh*t. Cat hair on every computational device/screen.

Updating to12.2 seems to have fixed the problem. After a very dry winter I’ve started running a humidifier in my house.

Hope your issues don’t return. I’ve been on 12.2 for a while now and it did not resolve the issue permanently.

I am not sure if it is software or hardware issue, I updated to IOS 12.3 beta 2 and problem still persists... so I ended up sending my iPad to local AASP, they are gonna replace my device... hopefully all is well after I received my replacement device....

yes it was awful when your ipad became useless almost on everyday...

now im the point that when the next ios update comes, im not sure if im going to update the ipad - i dont want to go back, when the ipad didnt work at all. and i dont mean that ios is causing, but now after the latest update, my ipad finally works. it may be ios or apps or their combo working funny. anyway... it has been working fine now, so it cant be hardware issue - otherwise it would be there always. it may be hardware+ios combo, but i dont think it is faulty hardware but more or less faulty code using the hardware.

Still seems fine on 12.3 beta 2. I did have one instance where mail became unresponsive to touch for a second, but not sure if that was the app hanging or if touch was failing. Outside of that it has still been way better on the beta.

For me it’s getting worse now. Currently on 12.3 public beta 2. Previously it’s been only scrolling, or almost only, now it impacts tapping/keyboard really hard. Here’s my example of trying to typemin qwertyuiop...:
