Just got back from Apple on this...

They replied, it may take a day or so, as they have allot to get through... They also said they need to manual check eligibility .

Makes sense,:apple:
They have to MANUALLY check eligibility on an Apple Computer purchased from an Apple Store so you can download an Apple OS from the Apple Mac Store using your Apple User ID?!?! How does that make sense?

What ever happened to the simplicity of living within Apple's ecosystem? We bought it first, there's not reason we should get it last.

I don't know where they're getting the 72 hours from. The following is straight from Mountain Lion upgrade page:

"Upon receipt of your completed order form and proof of purchase, a content code for OS X Mountain Lion, redeemable on the Mac App Store, will be emailed within 24 hours of order qualification."

72 hours is an estimate for the time it will take to qualify the order?

*shrugs*... Bit of both.

If I was Apple I would've included a $20 gift card to each Mac purchaser starting with the date listed in the program.

You redeem in App store and have the proper funds to purchase the OSX anyway...

My 2 cents.

But yes, like everyone else I submitted my SN hours and hours ago and am still waiting. I called Apple and told them of the situation and I asked about purchasing now and getting the credit later. They said no problem, made notes in my account, and said to call when my redemption codes hits my mailbox.

^ This...pretty simple--and brilliant all in one move. Amazing with all the smart people in Cupertino...it took a Jets fan to come up with a Winner. Nice job Dave!

Go Pats! :p

Was thinking the exact same thing....

Alternatively, they could have shipped a pile of cards out to stores and given one to each person who bought a mac in the qualifying time period.

Or the serial numbers serving as the access codes.

Ideally, the code would be sealed in the packaging so no one could get it without buying the item (much like with digital+hard copy comics, sealed in a plastic bag so no one can get digital access for free), but that's not plausible.

Or simply just open the program up a week early for "up-to-date" customers. It lets Apple test out their system and if an Apple customer wanted to get ML early also then they'd have to buy a Mac. Win-Win.

Anyway, all I know is that pirates are getting their copy before legitimate users.

I was able to have Apple revoke the charge I paid for Mountain Lion. I was sick of waiting for my up-to-date code so I simply paid for it on the MAS, emailed iTunes support (via ExpressLane), and the support person was kind enough to revoke the $19.99 charge on my account.

However, this means that I can't download ML on any of my other Macs since the charge was revoked. BUT I can still claim my code once it arrives, which will let me then install ML on my other Macs. So basically I get Mountain Lion today on one machine, but my wife will have to continue waiting. I'll take it! :p

Very cool of iTunes support! I am pleased.

Here's the email response I got:

Dear NMF,

Welcome to iTunes Store Customer Support. My name is Sanmathi and I am glad to help you today.

I understand that you would like a refund for your "OS X Mountain Lion" purchase. I know how eager you are to get this issue resolved and I am happy to assist you with this issue.

NMF, I have reversed the charge for the purchase. In five to seven business days, a credit of 19.99 USD should be posted to the credit card that appears on the receipt for that purchase.

However, as I have refunded this for your purchase, you won't be able to redownload it on your other Macs. So, I suggest you to fill a claim for free redemption code.

To fill a claim follow the link below:

http://www.apple.com/osx/uptodate/

If you have any difficulties feel free to contact us and we will be happy to assist you.

Have a nice day!

Sincerely,

Sanmathi

I still can't believe they need to _manually_ check your eligibility, seems ridiculous. Wouldn't they save so much time and manpower just to write some code that checks the validity instead?

In fact, we shouldn't even need to APPLY. Why don't they just automatically send out codes to all the orders within the validity period - especially Apple store / online orders.

I can understand them needing to check if its from a 3rd party provider.

The bogus thing about this whole "manual check" thing is that every single 2012 Macbook Air/MacBook Pro falls within the eligibility time frame so if it's a registered 2012 machine then what exactly are they verifying?

Right! I got so excited thinking it was my code. What a disappointment. I was thinking about just paying the $20, I have been anxiously awaiting for this release but that isn't fair. Reading all the posts from those that installed, come on Apple, we deserve to be playing tonight too!!!
