China already had lane guidance. This is something new.

Chinese have highways that are like 8 lanes across....and when the split into an intersecting highway, just saying “be in the 4th lane from the right” isn’t good enough.

It’s still lane guidance, but with more of a straight on 3D view since the highway “junctions” typically ramps up or down into multi levels.

Really, just a more detailed lane guidance view for these type of situations.

We have something similar in the USA (like in Texas cities), but since ours are so much more simplified, lane guidance is typically enough. But I have to admit, I wouldn’t have minded junction view on some of those drives where there are upper and lower versions of the same highway that are there for different reasons. Like in San Antonio.

Living in China and experiencing this regularly... it's junctions/slip roads like the one at the bottom far right that need this the most, ie you're told to be in one of those two lanes but might find out all too late that you're in one that's now going to take you the fully opposite direction of what you want. The lane guidance works fairly well, but either being more specific about which lane to be in (not sure how that would be "junction view" though, it'd just be an improved lane guidance) or showing various steps at a junction rather than just the immediate "take the right" might help.

Ok, I kind of get an idea now of what it is all about. ;) However, giving it a special “Junction View” name is still confusing, imho.

But that is what they call them...I would think "Enhanced Lane Guidance" would have been clearer...or simply stating the details more.

I thought everyone on here was saying Google and Waze didn’t convert to the new split layout. This article shows otherwise.

Can anyone on here confirm with screenshots? Really caught me by surprise.

If you look closely, all of the split view maps are Apple Maps. Google Maps is running in the background and sending a notification, similar to what I posted earlier. At least that's what I'm seeing in the article. Curious about the settings app. I should check that out.

The Waze pics show it on the screen though.

I originally wrote that about that “Google” pic...it’s Apple Maps...but look at the bottom of the article.

Are you talking about the tweet? It looks like the fullscreen images are of Waze, but the split screen looks like AM in dark mode. The route colors are different and I'm assuming that Waze is in the background and would push notifications when a turn is coming up in split view. Maybe I'm still missing something...

Hmm...while I'm not seeing any new overlay data in New York City yet, my neighborhood in Queens has some new road data. More specifically, Apple Maps is now showing some private parking lot roadways for a few apartment buildings in my community. That's new. Maybe popped up some time today. I'm gonna go take a drive to get some pizza.

After exploring and taking a closer look at the new parking lot additions, I'm a bit disappointed. About half of them in my area have incorrect entrances, or are shown connecting to streets that they don't connect to. Which makes me wonder where Apple is getting the data from. I'd guess they're using satellite imagery only at the moment, where certain finer details could be obstructed by trees.

I've sent in some corrections to see if they take notice.

That will be important with their promise to be better about taking one to the appropriate entrance of a store versus just the street address (such a pain for malls and large shopping centers).

I think you are correct though...parking lots have to be first laid out by satellite image and then adjusted in house for the details. The Apple Van isn't driving up and down those rows...hah.

Well, these are private parking lots for apartment buildings. I'm surprised they're even adding them, although they're not the first map to do so. Google Maps has one or two random lots in my area.

But if they're gonna do them, I want them to do them right.

Agreed...I think their parking lot additions have been great.

Waze discourages all but main access roads into parking lots which can be frustrating on larger ones with one way aisles. I need Maps just to figure out how to get out of some of these lots!

While Apple's data for my area could be corrected later this year once Apple Maps is updated with the data from the Apple Maps car that drove through my area in the last few months, I have taken advantage of iOS 13's ability to edit entrance locations to correct a few entrances in my neck of the woods.

Once that new data is brought here, if there are still errors, I'll be using that edit feature a LOT.

Do we know yet how many of these changes are server-side, and how many are iOS 13-specific? I'm asking cause my lowly iPhone 6 can't move up to iOS 13 and I'm hoping to get at least some kind of Maps improvement with the rollout.

I would assume that the key iOS 13 features of ETA Sharing, Look Around, Favorites, Collections, etc. will not be available to you, but I don't see any reason why you would not receive the updated maps data and routing, since those began to show up on iOS 12.

surprised not to see the "look around" feature come to UK, Spain and Italy on launch, we've had Apple Maps vehicles driving around for a few years now in Europe, especially in the UK since 2015.

Hey...maybe a BIG find here (and of course, I had to run out 5 seconds after I saw it!)

Just started watching the Map Kit/Map Kit JS session video from WWDC (link in first post) and a few minutes in, he’s talking about the new Maps features and then mentions access on the web!

I paused the video and it looks like Maps will be available as a web application and not just limited to the Maps app on Mac.

Can someone confirm? Like I said, I had to run out right when I saw it and not sure when I’m gonna be home/have access to study more.

I took the "on the web" references to pertain to 3rd parties embedding apple maps. I would love to see maps.apple.com though, it would bring so many more eyes to crowd source information.

Maybe...I hope it’s more than that.

They’ve had that ability since last year though...grabbing static Map images to place on websites.

I’ll dig into more when I have time this afternoon.
